What makes you say that? Do watch league one games? Silly advance statistics? I havent been following closely, but what I have seen has been fine. Id also let him settle into a new environment before making strong judments.

That is a very suspect bit of info. If true, lucky for Steffen shot stopping is actually very small part of goalkeeping and we are even more lucky to finally have a coach who understand that.

Needs to move abroad ASAP. Id like to see guys like this start getting called in for the 3rdmir even 4th GK position. I think Steffen, Turner, and Steffen really need to start proving it on the field in a top league. If they aren't, then I would start calling in guys with the highest potential.

Steffen fails both the eye test and the stats test. And the shot stopping numbers are absolutely relevant and there’s no one would say shot stopping is only a small part of goalkeeping. It’s a fairly critical part, though it’s not the only component of the position.

I don’t think anyone whose watched MLS this year would say Steffen has been close to one of the top American goalies in the league.

You guys need to find some goalkeeping coaches to have them explain what they think is important about goalkeeping. To add to the fact that I think play in MLS is absolutely irrelevant, I'm not going to take the opinion of an advanced stat guys eyeball test. Personally, I think all you clowns that pushed Turner should accept how idiotic that was and that you actually know virtually nothing about goalkeeping. You guys won't stop and will continue to push and defend crappy players like you did under Berhalter. It is cute and also embarrassing that you guys think you know more than Pep.

Steffen has always been a very well rounded GK. Since we don't have any other ones like that, I will include him in my rosters. I would then judge with my own eyes how he trains and and plays (if he does). Don't worry, if he doesn't step up I wouldnt keep him in every camp like that ******** of coach did because I actually respect our national team.

Steffen was also not very good in qualifying the last time he got regular playing time.

It’s just a fact that he’s not playing particularly well in MLS and goalies like Schulte and Freese are playing better. Why would you not take the goalie playing better in the same league?

Turner was horrible at Panama, was ultimately made the #1, Steffen was cut so they had clear #1 (wtf!!!), has proven he nowhere near as good as anybody close to MLS suggested and now doesn't play.

No... MLS is irrelevant. For a clown who who defended Berhalters guys for years, this is just an unnecessary discussion.

I get it, but everyone here is making assumptions about what Pochettino is looking for and what he wants from January camp. We don't know.

Not a single player at our last January camp played a second at Copa America. Not even a second.

This is no longer a "USMNT camp" like it was 20 years ago.

I'm fully on board with ending the January camp for the USMNT.
Have a joint U20/U23 camp in January with the senior USMNT staff present.
You can still call it January camp if you want. Semantics. Only call-in players eligible for the 2028 Olympics.

Since not a single second was played at Copa America by a January camp player, the training and matches in January tell us literally nothing about who might fit in with the senior USMNT. That's very different from 20 years ago.

So how one looks with the professional club they play with on a day to day basis is irrelevant?

No MLS irrelevant. Even if i thought was worthwhile, I wouldn't trust any MLS fan view on a player. They are consistently wrong on field players and showed with Turner they have no clue on GKs.

Steffen was bright prospect who has had troubles. We will see what he does in camp and go from there. Please stopping filling this forum with info about MLS. It is as irrelevant as your goalkeeping opinions.

I just chuckled as remembered your view that it was perfectly OK for a coach ********ing waste the first year of a cycle.

So, Steffan gets a pass since he went to Europe and bombed out even though he now plays in MLS? If he never leaves MLS again, how long does it take before he's out of the running or is playing in Europe a lifetime pass regardless where you end up? Are there specific rules as to how you get to be considered not an MLS player even when you're playing in MLS? Just trying to figure out how this works.

Maybe Pochettino actually thinks Steffen is a bright prospect in Europe.

That is a weird interpretation. He is getting a pass because the position is so poor and he has performed well in the past at the international level and is best all round GK. That is a lot more reason than the pretty much no reason for giving Schulte a pass.

I'd hope he would want to find a place abroad in the next year. I am going to throw one more crazy idea out there... how he plays for the USMNT is going to matter a lot on my views on him going forward.

Sorry that isn't going to be as exciting as you would have hoped. Never really thought about those stupid questions at the end but I'd imagine the best way to at least start not being considered an MLS player is to try to actually go play somewhere else.

Who do you think should have been our starting GK from say 2021 through this year's Copa America?

No such fact that i can see. Steffen is still able to stop shots that most GK can't and I don't see him missing shots that most GKs would save. His stuffing of Morris recently is a prime example.

I would push back on him being able to stop most shots others can’t. The problem is fact is he struggling to save shots others save.

And he’s never been a great shotstopper though this year is much worse than he’s been in the past. The strengths of his game relative to the rest of the pool are the non shot stopping aspects of goalkeeping.

And the thing is you can’t go off a single good save like the one you mentioned against Morris. It’s about the body of work as a whole.

End of the regular season update….

Goalkeepers: Patrick Schulte, Roman Celentano, Matt Freese, Zack Steffen
    ALT: Chris Brady
    YA: Diego Kochen

…Main reason to watch the January Camp.

Right Backs: DeAndre Yedlin, Shaq Moore ALT: Oscar Verhoeven, Brooks Lennon, Reed Baker-Whiting, Reggie Cannon
    YA: Aiden Harangi

…When there isn’t anyone to get excited about, just call in vets, I guess.

Center Backs: Walker Zimmerman, Miles Robinson, Tim Ream, Jalen Neal
ALT: Noah Cobb, Matai Akinbomni, Jackson Ragen, Sean Nealis, Henry Kessler, Andrew Privett, Justen Glad
YA: Joshua Wynder, Kobi Henry, Noahkai Banks, Grayson Dettoni, Chris Mbai-Assem

…Similarly, if there isn’t anyone to get excited about call in vets. Only difference between RB and CB is that there are, at least, interesting yanks abroad options if we can get them to come.

Oh, and I’m not that high on Neal. I came close to calling in Ragen or Privett, or moving Sands to CB. But we’ll see.

Left Backs: John Tolkin, Peyton Miller
ALT: DeJuan Jones, Noah Allen, Devin Padelford, Luca Bombino, Max Arfsten, Sam Vines, Sawyer Jura, Nolan Norris, Tahir Reid-Brown
    YA: Jonathan Gomez
    Dual: Christian McFarlane

…If Tolkin doesn’t move, this is his time to shine. Jones could be dropped as he hasn’t been playing much (Arfsten has been playing over him.) And Peyton Miller is a worthy youth pick (especially if we can’t get McFarlane).

Midfielders: James Sands, Daniel Edelman, Jack McGlynn, Cole Bassett
ALT: Danny Leyva, Josh Atencio, Brooklyn Raines, Kellyn Acosta, Tim Tillman, Cristian Roldan, Owen Wolff, Leon Flach, Oliver Larraz
YA: Pedro Soma, Ethan Kohler, Adrian Gill

…Essentially promoting the new generation players, but I don’t have high hopes.

Attackers: Quinn Sullivan, Caden Clark, Diego Luna, Brian Gutierrez, Ben Cremaschi, Djordje Mihailovic
ALT: Cavan Sullivan, Niko Tsakiris, Gerardo Valenzuela, Aziel Jackson, Ted Ku-DiPietro, Paul Arriola, Cruz Medina, David Vazquez, Max Carrizo, Luke Brennan, Zavier Gozo, Nimfasha Berchimas, Ruben Ramos, Indiana Vassilev, Bryce Duke, Jackson Hopkins, Tyler Wolff
    YA: Cade Cowell, Alex Zendejas

…Same story as the midfield. Luna is probably the most promising.

    Forwards: Jordan Morris, Duncan McGuire
ALT: Jesus Ferreira, Brian White, Julian Hall, Bryce Jamison, Logan Farrington
YA: Brandon Vazquez, Keyrol Figueroa, Marcos Zambrano, Austyn Jones, Alex Staff, Dino Klapija, Jykese Fields

…Throwing spaghetti at the wall for this one. Would be really valuable to actually get Vazquez. No one else really would help our program.

    Starting XI

    ———————Morris————————
    Gutierrez——-Cremaschi————Luna
    ————Sands———McGlynn————
    Tolkin—————————————Yedlin
    ————Walker———-Miles—————-
    ———————-Schulte———————-

Bench: Celentano, Ream, Moore, Bassett, Sullivan, Mihailovic, McGuire

What does Patrick Agyemang have to do to get noticed on this board?
I know he plays for Charlotte, but I believe Charlotte is in MLS.

Leading domestic goal scorers in MLS:

    Brian White 15
    Jordan Morris 13
    Djordje Mihailovic 11
    Patrick Agyemang 10
    Duncan McGuire 10

Oversight. But for some reason, I couldn’t remember if he was or was not eligible. Looking back, he should be eligible. Probably just kept mixing his name up with the other Ghanaian, Patrick Agyemang by accident.

I'd call in 5 or even 6 CBs, Ragen has earned it for me and I'd be down to see Privett or Glad but I still want to keep Neal around.

At center back, and especially goalkeeper, it’s worth it. Those are the 2 positions where a player might actually could break into the team.

I'd add wing which is wide open right now as well. Not many MLS options there really but if we get LigaMX guys for that camp Cowell and/or Zendejas could easily get in the mix.

I give this a 0.1% chance of actualizing, but it would be an interesting idea….

    USMNT - White
    GK Schulte, Freese, Guzan
    RB Yedlin, Lennon
    CB Robinson, Privett
    CB Zimmerman, Neal
    LB Tolkin, Miller
    MF Sands, Atencio
    MF McGlynn, T. Tillman
    AM Cremaschi, Tsakiris
    RW Luna, Clark
    LW Gutierrez, Valenzuela
    FW McGuire, Farrington

    USMNT - Blue
    GK Celentano, Brady, Steffen
    RB Moore, Cannon
    CB Ragen, Kessler
    CB Ream, Glad
    LB Jones, Arfsten
    MF Edelman, Acosta
    MF Bassett, Roldan
    AM Ferreira, O. Wolff
    RW Mihailovic, Arriola
    LW Q. Sullivan, Berchimas
    FW J. Morris, Agyemang

    USMNT - Red (Alternates)
    GK Callender, Beavers, Stuver
    RB Harriel, Baker-Whiting
    CB Cobb, Murphy
    CB Akinbomni, Nealis
    LB McFarlane (Vines), Norris
    MF Raines, Pomykal
    MF Parks, Flach
    AM C. Sullivan, Medina
    RW Brennan, Vazquez
    LW Gozo, Ramos
    FW Hall, White

Again, likely to happen? No. But it would be a great way for Poch to assess his player pool.

If this was my circus, I’d see about a 2 week camp. First week would be this. Televised friendly. Then, Second week would be best 23 out of these 2 camps against some international opponent.

Waste of time, money, and resources. Keep in mind how many false signals the last coach got from domestic camps. I have to think Poch knows that this will be a waste of time for the USMNT, but maybe he views as a responsibility to support the league and try to help. I thought I recall some clip of him trying to help the league. If this is true, I look forward to MLS ignoring anything and everything.
