will it have a crap atmosphere like crew stadium? sorry to say this but i think the new la stadium is going to have a corporate atmosphere! seriously most people at the galaxy games are mexican and they are very quiet compared to when mexican teams play there. i saw the pre libertadores games and the crowds were very loud, i havent seen crowds like that in galaxy games.
I think your going to be plesantly supprised at the atmosphere at Victoria Street. The roof at the new stadium is going to keep in a lot of noise. Enjoy.
"And where did you come up with this theory of Crew Stadium having a crap atmosphere?" common knowledge
You don't have a clue about who attends galaxy games, so crawl back into your hole. Ton's of central american's at the Galaxy games, but I guess "they're all mexicans" huh? The riot squad, in it's first year is one of the most vocal and well organized groups in the league.
If you had been at the last game at the RB, you would have felt an electric atmosphere that matches any in MLS. Put that same crowd in a smaller stadium with a roof and it would be dynomite. Wait until Victoria Street opens, experience it, and then comment. Anything else is speculation.
i would love to see the riot squad come to the Razor on sunday, so that they could get their egos deflated after watching the Midnight Riders in the Fort show them how it's done in the stands, while the Revs show the Galaxatives how it's done on the field.
Look, I'm not trying to be an American idealogue or anything. Can we cut this BS out with "Victoria Street?" It's the Home Depot National Training Center. And using that stupidly Europhiliac name is just obsurd. What's more, places like Maine Road, White Hart Lane, Stamford Bridge, etc. have old fashioned charm and beautiful edifices, albeit with offensively ugly, erector set-like roofs. HDNTC is will outwardly look like any other new stadium. Long on metal, short on charm.
I won't agree or disagree with your opinion but your facts are wrong/misleading. The stadium has not yet been named. The stadium is just one piece (albeit the biggest) of the Home Depot National Training Center and it will most certainly have its own name. Andy
I can tell you're really up on your american stadium knowledge. Fact is, alot of stadiums in the U.S. have nicknames that have been given to them by the fans. Here in philly we don't go around saying, "hey everyone, let's go down to veterans stadium!" we say, "let's go to the vet". In other words, giving a nickname to a stadium isn't something that was introduced by the Europeans, as you make it sound. It happens everywhere. I ain't callin that place the Home Depot National Training Center, it sounds retarded.
Victoria Street is the unofficial nickname that LA fans adopted before the naming of the NTC (which also has a nice ring to it). As for the atmosphere being good or bad, I think it'll be the former with Riot Squad, Galaxians and other groups making noise, but then we'll have to wait and see.
Too bad it bugs you, but Victoria Street was the unofficial nickname given before the first concrete was poured. The stadium was given that name long before the corporate involvement by Home Depot. I am sure neither the team nor Home Depot are happy about people using a name which dilutes the corporate sponsorship aspect. I am sure they would rather see people saying "Home Depot" over and over again. Knowing that it also irritates some non-Galaxy fans only makes it more fun to use "Victoria Street" as the name.
I have a take on the topic of Columbus Crew Stadium atmosphere sucking (probably could be a new thread, but it's part of the title here). A stadium will only be as frenzied as the people who fill it! Look at Saprissa Stadium in Costa Rica. It's one of the biggest $#it-hole stadiums in the World, but the fanatics who fill it, make it one of the hardest places to play in. I am here to admit that as a 26 year old, life long Columbus resident, our sports crowds suck! By far the biggest thing in Columbus is Ohio State football. Even in the temple known as Ohio Stadium, the crowds suck. We are ranked 4th in the country right now, we average 104,000 fans a game and it is the quietest 104,000 people you've ever heard. Many people try to stand and cheer and are often told to sit down. People go there to be seen and they sit on their hands at games. This obviously happens as well at Crew Stadium. Every time the Fire comes to play us, their 50 fans embarrass our entire stadium by out vocalizing us. Now both have their exceptions, ie: OSU/Michigan and USA/Mexico, but overall we suck in Columbus. The biggest problem is that we don't know what to say. At football games, it's, "Let's go Bucks!" or "O-H-I-O!" Sweet, how creative. At Crew games, "let's go Crew" is a big one! At National team games, "USA! USA! USA!" is pretty big, but that is the case nation wide, not just at Crew Stadium. Europe has club teams that are a century old which is slightly less than half as old as The United States itself. They have songs and cheers that their great grandfather's grandfathers made up to sing. We do suck in Columbus, regardless of the sport, and that's why the atmosphere sucks. If we packed each game full and chanted and sang the whole game, Crew Stad could be like Cameron Indoor Stadium where Duke plays basketball. I don't think it's do to a lack of alcohol (certainly not on my part), but I don't know what the answer is. We just suck!
Here's a radical idea for you. Why don't you actually GO to the stadium before you try to force some affected nickname onto it. That way you might notice something about the atmosphere that inspires a proper nickname. You know, meaningful, memorable, evocative? Candlestick, Mile-High, The Vet. These are all names that stuck because they roll off the tongue easily. They sound cool to say. Victoria Street does not sound cool. It sounds like a lingerie outlet store. I think I can say with little doubt that whoever came up with this nickname does not work in advertising, marketing, or any other field involving catchy naming.
I have never seen so many jealous louts running around message boards in my life. If you guys don't like the name Victoria Street, that is fine by me, but piss off. Try to contain your jealousy. We as LA supporters are fine with calling Victoria Street and that is what really matters isn't it? As for the original posts about the fans in LA being "Mexican", most "Mexicans" aren't actually Mexican. They come from all over Central America. A good part of the crowds who used to come to Galaxy games were hispanic or latin american, but that has slowly changed over the past 7 years. And as for atmosphere in the Rose Bowl and next year in the new stadium, it is quite loud and probably one of the most active, knowledgable fan bases around. Now piss off. www.lariotsquad.net
I can't disagree too much with people saying that the Crew crowds are less than ideal. I have been to three games this year(I live in Cleveland) and each game the atmosphere has gotten better. The last game was the Wed game against NE so it is expected to be better. Usually when I stand in the North End I can only hear our chants and the usual reactions from the rest of the stadium. On Wed though the crowd was much better. I heard them pick up on our chants and even start some of their own. Atmosphere evolves from fans knowing the sport and knowing when to chant sing etc. The Dawg pound was not always as rowdy as it was in the late 80's and will hopefully regain that form once the yuppie businees folks leave. I doubt the atmosphere at the LA stadium will be great right out of the blocks, but once people get a feel for where they are I expect it to pick up.
God save us from the slick marketeers, those brainy people who came up with really catchy names for the Edsel and New Coke. Like it or not, Victoria Street has evolved organically among the people who will be going there. It accurately describes the location, and is evocative of a long-standing soccer tradition in stadium naming. It's in a tradition which pre-dates Enron Field, for example, and suggests a more innocent less crass approach which many people find attractive. You can keep your Qualcom Stadium and Enron Field if you find those catchy. And, by the way, there is no more "Candlestick" regardless of how catchy you thought it was.
