Arena has stated that the USMNT will be made up of mostly MLS players for the next few years while he picks his players for 2006. With Steward, Moore, Hedjuk coming back into the league, what will happen to the changes of the young guys like Convey or Quaranta to get extended playing time with the USMNT? And does this promote better competition for these spots on the team, resulting in a better USMNT?
I think Stewart is done with the National Team for the most part. If Bruce needs/wants a capable veteran, then I think Earnie's that guy now (kinda like Tab was the last four years) I think Dude is the only one to threaten to take time away from kids.
I would have used Preki as my example, but I think you're right. Moore and Stewart will probably only see call-ups if we are really short-handed at a position.
In my opinion, Stewart and Moore would only get called into a camp to help "train" the youngsters. Both have been consumate professionals and are proven at that "next" level. Both may have something to add to the kids as they try to make the step to the next level. So if BA calls 24 or 26 into a camp in preparation for a series of games, I can see him asking them to come participate to have quality opposition for the kids to play against in camp. Other than that, I don't see any of them (including Hejduk) getting used.
Arena is building for the future, he knows that he's got a top 4 under 20 squad and if he can get them clicking now, with help from guys like Cletus and McBride, he will have them in devastaing form in 2006. The proof is not in him starting 19 year old Convey two times in a row now, but that he started him in '99 against Brasil. Kids need not worry, Bruce learned not to underestimate the likes of youngin's when Beaz and Dono just excelled t the world cup.
