They've shown a nice ability to play average/below average football every so often, adn they'll be in pre/early season form, so they're likely to have a scare or two. Can't believe they won't survive it, however. Nothing against TNS.

If they don't, will they attempt to change the rules again?

You'll not the precedent set a couple years back when Real Madrid won the CL, yet failed to finish high enough in La Liga to qualify the next season -- leading to subsequent pulling of the strings to include them in the following year's CL.

As far as Reds getting past the three qualifying rounds? Ridiculous question. There's no doubt Liverpool will advance past TNS and whatever minnows follow from the Faroe Islands or Lithuania or wherever.

Lest we forget that the mighty champions of Europe were knocked out of the FA Cup by Burnley, yeah?

Touche. Still, I think they'll persevere.

TNS will prove to be a test for liverpool since the are the welsh premier league champs but its liverpool they are the champs of europe and they are (and i mean no offense to andy TNS fans) the better team at least on paper but then again thats why they play the games.

I think the real question is, will Shevchenko ever be the same after missing that pk?

not really a precedent since the decision was made by the spanish FA to take zaragoza's place for finishing 4th in the league and give it to real madrid, which is rather different to the situation with liverpool.

Don't be silly. Liverpool NEVER lose on penalties in big games. They haven't yet.

Exactly. It was a very different situation altogether. For a start, Madrid went straight to the group stage whereas Liverpool have now become the first and will be the ONLY defending European Champion to have had to start from the first qualifying round. No previous European Champions has been made to play preliminary rounds before.

I'm also relatively sure no defending European Champion ever finished 37 points behind the leader in their domestic league... and elevated into 5th only by gd over bolton.
