Sorry to hear, glad you’re ok. We’re also evacuated. Home ok for now, but may not get back for days if not weeks. This is the worst there’s ever been, and its not particularly close.
I’ve been texting with my ex, who is a native Angelino and lives in the Van Nuys area. Says the smoke in the air is pretty bad. But of course she (and I) are most worried about the loss of homes and landmarks. And lives. Stay safe guys/gals! Hope your homes and those of your loved ones are spared from these infernos.
DONATION HELP:Galaxy fans, fellow supporter Steve and his wife had their home taken from them by the fire in Alta Dena. Steve says he had only time to grabe his Galaxy Hat and a few other items as he evacuated. Please help if you can!https://t.co/Xg2KBH9w65@LAGalaxy #MLS— Corner Of The Galaxy (@GalaxyPodcast) January 9, 2025
some things are bigger In moments of hardship, the rivalry between LA Galaxy and LAFC fades away. When LA County needs us, we stand as one, bound by something greater than the rivalry. At our core, we share the same love—the love for our city, our people, and the place we call home. #LAGalaxy x #LAFC— Melvin (@melvinrocker) January 9, 2025
Fire has now broken out in my neighborhood, but the wind is blowing it the other way so the evacuation zone is about a mile away from me. So I'm good for now - but man these fires are popping up everywhere....
If the winds shift the opposite way I'll be more worried about what that means than the fire. (The last time the winds came from the south and pushed north was the first hurricane/tropical storm to ever hit Los Angeles)
According to Instagram stories, both #AngelCityFC captain Ali Riley and former #LAFC captain Carlos Vela have seen their homes burned down in the LA fires. Two of the most prominent figures in LA soccer among the many devastated by these fires. pic.twitter.com/QSqIYm5Rfx— Justin Ruderman (@JustinRuderman_) January 9, 2025
Yeah - but they've already removed the evacuation zones that were a couple blocks away from me. It's moving west into Ventura County. Rumors that they arrested someone and are considering it an arson investigation....
I remember this seems to happen a lot during these fire breakouts. I remember a huge one many years ago where arson was involved in at least part of it.
However, as dry as things are in the Southland, I would take a hurricane and a nice dump of rain in an instant. Of course there will be mudslides, but that seems inevitable at this point, if there is any rain at all.
I have seen articles claiming that there are areas (like the general Malibu area) that have historical patterns of major fires that burn down to the sea. This was documented for the Malibu area in a 2018 LA Times article. https://www.latimes.com/projects/la-me-malibu-wildfire-history/ If true, this makes it seem that these areas given enough time, will burn again. Rebuilding in a fire zone is like rebuilding in a flood plain or on a coastal island. It would seem that at a minimum, things like power lines should be buried and building codes updated. Of course nothing can protect us from psychotic arsonists. Note: I am not blaming current residents, so much as developers and government officials. There is a reasonable expectation that homes are built in relatively safe locations not subject to forecastable disasters.
