Wigan Athletic have also missed the presence of Wilson Palacios, this since he departed for Tottenham Hotspur. The Honduran International alongside Valencia, both provided plenty of valuable service to the strikers, and both were key, influencial figures in the midfield. With Palacios now gone though, the amount of quality service to the strike force has dried up. On a different note, how's your first day as moderator been DamnEcuadorian? Feel free to answer this in a more appropriate thread if you choose.
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) You guys think Steve Bruce reads our posts? http://www.people.co.uk/sport/footb...objectid=21327957&siteid=93463-name_page.html
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) let me tell you one thing... wigan is a big step up from Getafe... and if Joffre it might do him some good.
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) HAHAHAHA maybe...just maybe. Actually I gave Stevie a quick call If I had to make a guess, I would say Wigan management is close to some of these agents from up-and-coming countries like Ecuador and Honduras, whereas all the bigger clubs are probably connected to Brazil, Argentina, and other European leagues. So far, it's worked out well for Wigan, who are in the top half of the EPL on a relatively meager budget. Frankly, Guerron really is a good fit. Same characteristics as Valencia, except not as accurate in his passing and crossing. But I might say that Guerron is a little better attacking, especially in the box, whereas Valencia prefers to take shots or crosses from outside the 18. Guerron's speed will also impress in England, whereas in Spain the game is slower and more technical.
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) Guerron and England don't go together at this point in his career. England's style of play would be much more complicated for him. He does have speed but he needs to use it wisely and not ball hog. Guerron needs to learn how to play as a team and he'll make it in any league, but since he hasn't gotten to that point I see his chances of success there as something SLIM. Hopefully I'm wrong. Guerron fits well in a easier league. I'd say Hollands Eredivise is the spot for him right now for a fresh start.
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) Remember Valencia didn't quite cut it in Spain either. Fast and powerful seems to go unnoticed there. Took Valencia a season to adapt at Wigan, then he became a key player only last year.
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) Valencia didn't cut it in Villareal b/c there were so many "more experienced" players in his position at the time. On top of that the pressure on a 19 year old coming straight from El Nacional to playing with top notch players in a big team like Villareal is muuuucch more greater than the level of pressure on a player like Guerron (23 year old) who triumphed in Liga winning a Libertadores and going to a midtable team like Getafe with big hype. The level of experience that Guerron had when he left from LDU was much greater than Valencia's when he left El Nacional. I think if Valencia would have been put in a team like Getafe at age 19 he would have triumphed and had much more playing time than Guerron has had. Remember that Valencia lacked opportunities in Villareal....but Guerron has had various opportunities and has failed to impress....But like I said Guerron has the speed and strength for EPL he just needs to fix the whole ball hogging problem he has. AND those ridiculous shots he takes hitting the side of the net 90% of the time he attempts to shoot on goal instead of making a pass.

Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) The record for 'The Crossbar Challenge' which is a part of the Sky Sports TV show known as Soccer AM, is currently at 4 crossbar hits, and is held by Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers (who we will see in the EPL as of next season since they won the Championship in the current campaign). Below is the record breaking vid, and it only occured a few weeks back: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ViYbNCRW98"]YouTube - Wolves Crossbar challenge (soccer am) *New* record[/ame]
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) Steve Bruce may leave Wigan. I don't know how I feel about Benitez going to Wigan anymore. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/may/28/steve-bruce-sunderland-wigan-athletic
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) Giving that Bruce is a goerdie, hopefully the idea of moving to rivals Sunderland would be out of the question. Saying that though the money that new owner and American billionaire, Ellis Short, could offer Bruce might just tempt the former Manchester United player to take the job. Should this be the case then we might instead see Benitez playing his football at the Stadium of Light on a regular basis .
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) "Sunderland are not following up their initial interest in Steve Bruce, Sky Sports News understands. " http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11682_5351335,00.html so this doesnt seem like a done deal at all, he could verry well stay at wigan.
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) Thats great. Steve Bruce is a very great coach with great scouts as well. Im hopin he still wants to buy Benitez. BTW are there any updates on that situation?
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) According to Sky Sports News, Steve Bruce is currently in talks to become the new Sunderland manager, this after Sunderland agreed a compensation package of £3m with Wigan Athletic. http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_5358132,00.html
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/article/ALeqM5jfVLp3G31paODFBvphdL0K0gkw7Q I see where he's coming from now. He has to build an entire team from scratch, and just getting Benitez alone wouldn't do much for the team. Well, best of luck for him at Sunderland!
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) Nope not while we dont know where Bruce will be managing next season. Well we do but it wont be here............. According to the media over here Birmingham have offered £6.5m for Benitez.
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) Hmmmmm...it looks like Wigan is pulling a Liga de Quito. Perhaps the owners realize that it's time to sell their highly valued assets and take home a nice paycheck. Kind of like what Liga has done since they won the Libertadores. Unless they plan to reinvest and build for the future, I can't see Wigan surviving without replacing these guys with some decent names.
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) yeah except Liga's money went to pay for Bieler's contract, offsetting the 2.5 million from Salas returning cuz Red Star fell through, paying players and coaching bonuses...apparently a lot of the money was spent before it was collected. of the maybe 11-15 million that was collected, i think roughly half was spent. at least with wigan, with tv contracts and the bigger market plus globalization and whatnot, their spending efforts are sustainable for the long haul, assuming they can keep the PL status and don't spend like drunken sailors
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) Steve Bruce has now been officially confirmed as Sunderland boss. He has signed a three year deal with the North East outfit, and has taken Wigan assistant manager Eric Black with him. http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_5361497,00.html
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) Hopefully Bobby and Jonesey to replace them. Brilliant if that happend. No season ticket for me if Jewell came back.
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) I'm telling you - Wigan's owners are cashing out while they're on top. Please bookmark this post, because I'm stating for the record, that Wigan will not be in the EPL 3 seasons from now.
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) It looks like Wigan Athletic are set to appoint Swansea City boss Roberto Martinez as their new manager, this after the Coca Cola League Championship club granted Wigan permission to speak to the manager. Wigan have already agreed a compensation package with Swansea and now it's all about discussing the personal terms with the Spaniard, who once played for Wigan Athletc, as well as teams such as Real Zaragoza, Swansea City, and Chester City. http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_5363411,00.html
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) Martinez did more than "once play for Wigan". The guy is a legend in the same way you lot regard Shearer.
Re: Wigan Athletic F.C. (r) Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan expects to confirm Swansea City boss Roberto Martinez as the new Wigan Athletic boss on Wednesday. Roberto will sign a three year deal with Wigan, and compensation in excess of £1m will be paid to Roberto's soon to be former club Swansea City. http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_5367216,00.html
