Hell yeah I remember the Wings!!! I still to this day wear my one orange one blue shoelaces! The Orange Army was great too! I know what you mean though, it's like no one has ever heard of them or the players! I just recently joined here and would like to be active in this group! Traci
I JUST realized that a very young Braeden Cloutier (4th boy to right) was in this photo. These were inserts in the Wings' programs during the 1983-84 season.
Just stumbled across this on a yahoo search for Wichita Wings. Good to see so many fans still out here recalling the good old days. I remember going to my first game in the Wings second season. Growing up spending many winter nights in the coliseum with 9,000+ of my closest fans. In the 1990's I fulfilled a dream of being announced and running onto the field. It wasnt as I had planned, the name they would announce for me was "Score" the dinosaur. Not the early dull Score, but the lively one the last few seasons. That was until they retired him for that goofy airplane looking mascot. Ive read the posts and agree, the Johnsons screwed the team up beyond repair. I was a volunteer for the team until the Johnsons took over, after that, it wasnt the same. Wichita needs indoor soccer again. Especially now that I have a daughter that loves soccer. I had always thought there would be a team to take my children to and show them the excitement of indoor soccer. I hope that someday I will have that chance. Okay, I was long winded, sorry.
Not long winded at all. I hope you get your wish. It would be nice to see the Wings come back. I always thoght the Blast had some pretty awful mascots. That fuzzy thing. The guy with the dynamite. One of the only good things about the Baltimore Spirit was its mascot, Jinx the Cat. That woman knew how to be a mascot.
Yeah, there were some pretty awful looking mascots. We had an orange dinosaur, but it was actually one of the better ones I thought. Maybe Im just being impartial. I can honestly say, aside from the early days when we would get 9,000+ in the coliseum, my happiest times as a Wings fan was putting on that big orange outfit and doing all I could to get the fans into the game. My favorite memory in my time as score was the kidnapping of score episode. When I ran onto the field for scores return, attendance was up that night, the pyros going off when I entered, and the eruption of the crowd was amazing. I loved community and school appearances as score. Getting to be around the kids and make them happy was fun. On scores retirement night, making the last rounds, having kids come up and say they would miss score, probably the saddest night. There's times I would give anything to have a team again and be able to entertain for the fans one more time Someone mentioned Chen Horn earlier about bringing back the Wings when the arena opens. I can only hope that is true. Look how long he has kept the Thunder in Wichita. If he is serious, media teasers that the wings are coming back for the months leading up to the opening would build the excitement. As long as its not the Johnsons running the team, we can have a reborn successful soccer team.
Oh course I do they were always a pleasure to have in milwaukee It was nice way to see some of my favorite players. Trivia Question Does anybody remember the original wave mascot?
Would that be Dave the Wave? Then possibly shades, followed by dynomite, and now the infamous Brad Beach? Am I forgetting anyone?
i remember all the save wichita campaigns.........we had a lot of great teams especially in the 80's............and always choked in the playoffs.......mainly because of roy turner, compare him to marty schottenheimer.........we even had the dream team and couldnt make any noise in the playoffs.........but i still loved them
golfgod00- When you say you have 40 games do you mean 40 Wings games? If so, please send me a private message.
you guys remember the steamers/wings game when a fight broke out with steve peacher and a wings fan, i think a wings fan threw something at him in the penalty box and peacher got another penalty fighting the fan, and all the wings got was a couple of fans escorted out.........lol...............i think it was around 1983..........not sure if that was the same game that kim roentved hit a head shot over slobos head into the goal.......i need to watch that game again......lol
Omar gomez Ive been hearing that people say that gomez was the dirtiest player in soccer and the steamers goal keeper slobo said that he tried to hurt him and when he faced the wings that he was scared of gomez and chapman that they were going to try to hurt him.......i watched alot of games and never thought that of those two..........but anyways i was wondering if anyone knew what happen to omar gomez...........i didnt know he played for the ny arrows before coming to wichita, i thought he started with wichita, but i was wondering what happen to him when he was playing with wichita and he was so awesome and then he disappeared and i didnt know what happen to him and then a few yrs later he came back, overweight and wasnt the same, i have a wings gametape playing steamers and the steamers announcers make fun of him through the whole game...........him and chapman and borja were my favorite players growing up......i never forget in a game gomez scoring the game winner and hes running and jumps on the board to give his boy a kiss...........just too bad the wings are gone and not a championship
theres a myspace page called bringthewingsback.......or something like that, that a rumor is that they will try to bring the wings back when wichita gets the arena...........just wondering what the chances would be to get a indoor team again.............i think it would be awesome..........but prob not going to happen...............i remember in the begining........the coliseum would be maxed out and loud..........but towards the end and i was still going to the games, but there were alot of empty seats..............i think people got tired of wichita losing and all the save the wings campaigns........but i would love for the wings to come back no offense to soccer kick or whatever his name was but crazy george was a hoot, beating on his drumb......lol
Wichita Wings/ny arrows 3/14/1982 just watched this game, the wings should of won this game....up 3-1 in the 4th and arrows came back tied it up, but late in the game toth got out of goal and roentved had a open net and somehow toth got back and made a diving save and hit his face on the post, one of the best saves i have ever seen............throughout the game zungul was falling to the ground at every kick put on a academy award performance acting like he was in so much pain and next thing you know hes running down the field......was he a such a baby through his career??? i know he was awesome but he got away with so much..........in this game he pushed the ref.........through the ball at a ref, grabbed the ball out of the refs hands, just a big baby.........and then the game goes to overtime and they get a garbage goal as it bounced off 2 or 3 players and right through dowlers legs...........wings outplayed them but got the short end of the stick...........big play of the game was arrows coach got a 5min minor and the wings could not cash in on a 5min penalty.........they had their chances but shouldnt of blown the 2 goal lead in the 4th at home. also didnt realize that omar gomez played for the arrows, i thought he started his indoor career in wichita..........funny how they say he was the dirtiest player in the misl with the wings and nothing about him with the arrows..............which is bs.....
What is the fate of the old Kansas Coliseum? One of the 3 old MISL venues that I am really mad that I missed (Chicago Stadium and the SD Sports Arena also). If done right I think indoor would work there, especially if they are still going to use the old place as a venue, and of course we add St. Louis and KC.
is still there, but when the new arena is built not sure what will happen then, not sure the chances of bringing a team back here, i hope it happens. i think having the arena downtown would bring alot of people as where as the coliseum was a good 20min north of wichita.............through the 80s the wings had sellouts and could of had more people if the coliseum was bigger but towards the 90's til their fold, attendance dropped......i was still going late 90's and still would only be 4000 people at tops.........compared to the 80's when it was 10,000
Wings/Steamers 3/27/81 just watched this game, probably one of the best games ive seen wichita play, and i still dont know how they lost.....started 5-0 and led 7-3 in the 4th and even after they tied it up couple of times dont know how we didnt score, especially when slobo was out of goal and chapman had a pretty much open net and i think peacher saved it...........does anyone know what happen to Dowler at the end of the game?.............anyways it goes into a shootout and wings up 1, i couldnt see who the second wings player was to shoot, but he faked slobo out and had a clear open net and somehow missed it left off the post......dagger but know way it should of even went to overtime...........and when it did the wings outplayed the steamers the whole overtime and should of scored many of times, then when it went to a shootout i think the wings just folded under pressure especially when they were in control of the game from the begining...........just think if they had omar gomez or chico borja on that team.or dale ervine.............but the wings were a really good team in the early 80's just couldnt win the big games.............and then when terry nichol and frank rasmussen, players like that is what hurt the team years later.......but this was the game that really hurt, they should of played the arrows for the championship, not saying they would of won but you never know.............and then who knows what would happen years later............
