This has been touched on in a few threads, and i thought it deserved its own. So truly, why wasn't that war protested? I don't even think this is a partisan question. With millions around the world protesting a war that might happen, i am curious as to why there were no throaty mobs clogging the streets of the worlds major cities when the US bombed the Chinese embassy? Our involvment there could have gotten plenty mad, but it didn't. Where were the peace activists then? Please discuss

    Iraq is

    1) an eye opener for many
    2) the final drop for many
    3) totally different

I'm no expert on recent history, but I think the Chinese embassy incident occured in 1999 during the Kosovo campaign, not the earlier struggle in Bosnia.

To respond to your question, there were protests against the NATO intervention in Kosovo. These were mostly by the far left. I remember hearing Chomsky speak out against this campaign.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but Kosovo isn't Iraq. If you'd like to convince me otherwise I'm here with an open mind -- fire away.

Why is Arsenal good, and West Bromwich Albion bad?

    Because they're different.

Hey sockpuppet...what is your real moniker?

Call me that one more time why don't you? Give it up you moron. I may not agree with spejic, on well, everything, but at least i can talk to that guy. Way to expound on my post, it really illustrates your knowledge about this.

As to the Chinese embassy incident, yes, i got the war in Bosnia confused with the air war in Kosovo.Probably because Kosovo is in Bosnia, but your're right they were separate. My apologies. Also, i'm not trying to liken the war in Bosnia with Iraq. I just find it interseting how not a peep was made over our involvement there.

Chomsky and his ilk together don't make a deafening roar, but they did make somewhat of a peep over the Kosovo intervention. I see your point, but remember that the stated goal of that intervention was to save the Albanians in Kosovo from Serb atrocities. The stated goal in Iraq has not been -- even though it has been mentioned in passing -- to save the Shiites and the Kurds from Hussein's atrocities. Most of the current protesters just don't feel like Iraq is a threat to the US. In 1999 it was impossible to dispute the claim that Milosevic and the Serbs were a threat to the Kosovars.

Argh, really sorry. Didn't expect to get mired in geograhpy this morning. That whole break up of Yugoslavia has still got me reeling. To finally get this right, Kosovo, was in the former Yugoslavia, which Bosnia was also in at one point. Sorry to distract everyone with this.

I find it really funny when someone tries to make a direct comparison between two events, and then immediately follows (or prefaces) it with a "I'm not trying to compare these" statement. Comedy!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Why wasn't the war in Bosnia protested?

I simply compared the amount of protestors, not the actual event, and that was intended to make people ask themselves questions, about why there is such an uproar over a war that might happen. Bosnia was very real, and there weren't millions of protesting that "american soldiers were in harms way"

To get it really right Kosovo is/was a part of Serbia, whom along with Bosnia and others was the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia before the breakup.

he does really stand up for himself and isn't a hit and run kind of guy which i really despise about alot of people on here.

each view has it's own reasons so i don't fault. i tend to be "progressive"(not the communist kind) :D

West Bromwich Albion rules! The Baggies are just LULLING you into a FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY before they DROP THE BOMB, BABY!

Rather than actually recapitulate the many many many many many many differences between the Balkans and Iraq, I'll just point out that this is Chapter 1251 in the worst-selling series "Why We Should Invade Iraq."

Janeane, don't worry about these pointy-headed barbarians. You know I'll always love you.
