Why do you americans call it soccer. It's called football. The FOOTBALL Association was founded in the 1870's long before your NFL. So get your own name!

    From an American,

    I wholeheartedly agree.

I still have no idea why American Football is called football. The ball is touched with a FOOT maybe 10-15 times during the 3.5 hours the game is played.

    Not this crap again.

I hate having to teach the history of the English language to someone who in all likelihood is pretending to be English.

The term "Soccer" was first used in England, by English people.

The US is not the only country where "football" doesn't mean, to most of its citizens, first and foremost Association Football. So go bother Australians and certain parts of Ireland, too. And the South Africans could probably use your services too, especially old-guard whites.

And if your quest for purity is going to be pure, get on the Italians for calling it "Calcio."

I think we should start a huge thread on it. It's never been discussed much on these boards.

yeah, I've often wondered why it hasn't been discussed more. Perhaps toon_toon could ask the Americans that on the MLS boards, and perhaps suggest they adopt relegation and promotion too, as well as asking them why don't they stop having those stupid nicknames for their teams.

don't ask why i'm responding but here i go.

Football in america is called football because it is a different form of football from soccer. When it first started off their were to original forms of football, soccer and rugby. Hence the reason they are called rugby football clubs. Well obviously american football has its roots in rugby, and since that was the first form of "football" to catch on in the states, the name stuck, and soccer stuck with the other form of football. And anyways, if you look back to the early 1900's, american football was actually called gridiron football, which was a way to separate the two, untill soccer eventually fell out of teh mainstream thought. Well thats all for today, hope you all enjoyed.

Take the stick out of your limey A$$ and we'll call it whatever you like. We threw you off our continent 200 some years ago so we could do things our own way.....what makes you think we want to stop now?

I'm serious here too, you all need to back on off, we conform to only ourselves........ and frankly we like it that way.

I guess it depends on where you come from. In Australia, we have our own version of football called Australian Rules so most people here call the world game soccer. In fact, our national league here is even called the NSL. (National Soccer League)

    Exactly.
Different nations have their own opinion on the name of 'The World Game'.

Australia is huge on their Aussie Rules Football, however, we call it 'Footy'.

I would think a very high percentage of the World know The World Game as Soccer.

Oh your Americans and your nicknames what ever happened to United City or Ironopolis.

Also Mr goyoureddevils I suspect that like 90% or Man United or like the rest of the world like to call them The Bastar d Squad you have never been to Old Trafford (Theatre of Dreams) why is called this??? and that you are an armchair supporter and anyone who watches football regularly will tell you that you can only see 50% of the game on tv.

Answers to all questions below are :
1.No the Italians can call it what they want becasue they are good at football.
    2.Maradona but just.
3.Yes Italy are 10 times better than South Korea and should have won.

toon-toon, what is your native language, hopefully you will not say english, for their are many errors, and it would look terribly bad on your school system to continue to write in such a manner. I know, silly americans and our nicknames, heaven forbid a team was ever called the magpies or something silly like that.

Now that we're on the subjects, why don't we cap Michael Ricketts and start promotion / relegation in MLS?

Well actually i'm doing English A-level so my grammer better improve before May.

You don't cap him cos he's crap and for some reason already got a cap of england.

Promotion and relegation is one of the best of the season. you should really try it.

We are called the Magpies cos we play in black and white and there are a ************ load of magpies up here.

I'LL NEVER CALL A HOILDAY A VACATION IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE.

Funny that, we used to call you lot the skunks.

We could also start a thread on this.
We could also have the "I'm a better supporter than you because i've been to more games" thread.

    Are you Chinese?

Since the moderator...... Hi Andy, warned me to watch it on the brit bashing, all I'll say is this:
Beat us at a fight and you can make us call it whatever you want, but until we stop winning all hte wars around here, how about you just let us call it whatever funny little name we like. Is that soooooooo BAD?
