I thought it was supposed to happen before the end of the year.

The groundbreaking was supposed to occur back in Oct/Nov but things have been delayed due to a snag in land acquisition.

Most of the land for the project has been acquired, but one holdout landowner has been stringing things out in hopes of getting max $ for his property.

Reportedly, Frisco has authorized the use of emminent domain, if necessary, and latest word has it that groundbreaking should occur mid-January.

No.. Eminent domain is simply the right of the state to take private property for public use, for "the greater good". It's stated in the 5th Amendment of Constitution of the USA. The gov' must compensate the owner.
If the government didn't have that power we would still being trying to get the first freeway built here in LA..:)
Despite that though, we can't get one completed through South Pasadena since 1963 as they can afford to hire high powered lawyers unlike poorer neighborhoods.. :(

aint that the truth. F'ers! I curse the selfish bastards every frickin' time I have to drive to Glendale and then to Pasadena to cover the 5 miles from Monterrey Park/Alhambra.

    Carry on...

I never tire hearing the stories my Madrina (godmother) tells me of when she lived as a child in now what is center field of Dodger Stadium and how they had to move when the goverment used eminent domain for "the greater good of the people" in the Los Angeles area.[IMG]

She is not bitter though, she loves the Dodgers!

its quite common in road building as well. while no amount of money can replace a home, they do compensate fairly...

In the case of Dodger Stadium, the "fair compensation" to a low-income barrio wasn't enough to tear asunder a unique community. There were better options, but they chose to displace poor ppl b/c they would put up (in theory) less of a fight. They fought back, though, in an emotional refusal to leave. Quite stirring...

Before we trudge up old land deals and retrospectively turn them into pure class wars, doesn't it just make financial sense to acquire land for stadiums that simply doesn't cost as much money to buy?

  13. No..
It actually makes more sense to build new schools and after school tutoring centers... So those kids can become lawyers and teachers. Rather than diswashers and maids to the rich...
    But that will never happen...

LOL.. We could go on all day about South Pas'..
There was even a "war" between Alhambra and South Pasadena where Alhambra diverted traffic for a few days to cause those evil ones a headache.
But despite their best efforts and more suits, the Gold Line got done. They even tried to stop it with a late suit after it was almost completed that was to force the section through South Pas' underground at a huge additional expense. Now they have big yellow signs along the route telling the operators not to use their train horns or their bells and slow way down. LOL.. The law says they have to use their horns at crossings by federal law as far as I know. They have a big sign in South Pasadena for everyone to see stating "The Most Endangered Small Town in America". A' holes. I say we go to war. The North vs The South again with the same results! :D. I think I degress and go off topic. :(

Unless I built the place from the ground up with my bare hands, they can burn it to the ground and piss on the ashes for all I care...as long as I get my money. Hey...it's for the greater good!

My question is, why hasn't Gringo punched this guy in the nuts yet?

"Sign on the line old man or we'll break your hip."

Mid January is now a week away, and we still haven't heard anything.

If groundbreaking gets delayed again the stadium may not be finished in time for the opening of the 2005 season.
