Is it only insulting to me that no MLS team, especially the LA Galaxy, is playing Manchester United on the MU tour?
The Galaxy would sell out their new stadium against Man U. I bitched about this one a few months ago and I take pleasure in bitching again. US Soccer should not have allowed the tour to go through without one of the games against an MLS side.
So who made the decision? I heard MU did not want to play in smaller Home Depot stadium, but wouldn't have the MU sold out the Coliseum even if they played the LA Galaxy instead of some 2nd ranked mecican team. It's just too bad MLS could not have pushed harder for more to promote teh MLS league.
Don't care who's to blame, it's an outrage. MU should have played against SOMEBODY from the US. At least set up a scrimmage with MU against Freddy Adu, maybe? We could tie one of Freddy's legs behind his back, just to make it even.
I blame George Steinbrenner and the New York Yankees. That's right. Remember that the Yankees and Man U have an exclusive marketing agreement with each other. If Man U played an MLS team it would confer greater legitimacy on MLS. Something the Yankees aren't interested in doing. Afterall, if they were interested in MLS, they would already be involved. No, they want to promote Man U as the greatest soccer team in the world. Playing a lowly MLS team would only confuse the matter.
I know how everyone feels about this. I'm a European MLS fan living in ths country and we do not get one MLS team playing against Man Utd. MLS gets screwed again!
sounds about right to me. i like to blame George Steinbrenner and his Evil Empire for a lot of things, mainly the destruction of baseball, but this sounds about right too.
So totally a dis to MLS. I hope some smart aleck local sports reporter asks "Sir Alex," Say "Well Sir Alex, oh may I call you Alex? We notice that no MLS team is on the program for your tour. Were you scared to play them?" Now THAT would make for classic TV.
Like your page says "scaring Europe into cancelling the World Club Cup" No way Man U wants to play an MLS team in midseason form. Look at what last place DC United did to Tottenham in London last year, after having not played for two months! (1-0, DCU) James
Well... LA isn't the current Concacaf Champion. So, this is all about? You aren't angry because Man. United isn't playing a MLS team at all. You are angry because Man. United is playing a Mexican team instead of a MLS team? What if they were playing a team from another country American country, lets say Boca Juniors?
Clearly there is only one reason. Man Utd are in league with the NY Yankees to kill off soccer in America. They want to make the US public see MLS as second rate rubbish and stop fans from attending. This will cause the MLS to fold and therefore stop the advance of the MLS before it becomes the world's biggest league, which is Man Utd's big fear all along. They secretly know that MLS play is now on a par with the top leagues of the world and once an MLS team proved their superiorty with a victory in a friendly the world would know too. They can't take that risk, hence their ultimatum that no game between themselves and an MLS team be ever allowed to happen. As DC United showed with their victory at Tottenham, the worst MLS teams are better than an average EPL team, but that game was not even shown on British TV due to the EPL banning it to maintain it's myth of superiority. Once the secret is out the old order will come crashing down. I'm just glad so many on here expose this conspiracy for what it is.
Wow, you people really think that the Galaxy versus Man United would draw as well as against a Mexican or European side? This tour is about money gents, give it up already and enjoy the sport.
The REALLY fun bit will be to see how quickly the interviewer can translate Sir Alex' accent. Or how quickly he can run away. Not including Sir Alex' title is tantamount to painting your arse red, and waving it in the face of a short tempered, pissed-off bull. Jamesf24, its not hard to beat Tottenham. Dont read anything into it.
Not quite. Its called 'brand dominance.' United obviously dont want the MLS to grow too far, or their brands will be the ones kids seek. MU want the MLS to survive to keep football in the public eye, but they do not want any MLS club to challenge United for the title of biggest club in the world. Besides, the Yankees are in league with United as they want to find out why they are not the worlds biggest sports club. I think the fact they play a game that is largely ignored by the rest of the planet may have something to do with it... Why are people reading into DC United beating Spurs? Spurs are grade a cr@p! My local pub team would run them close!
Why no MLS? Why would you? Look, the Real/Roma game proved that you can get a ton of people within our borders to a match between two non-American teams. That was a ChampionsWorld match, and so is this entire tour. The person charge of ChampionsWorld is who? Oh yeah, the ex-GM of the Metrostars. Personal feelings alone are a good enough reason to not schedule an MLS team. But this is a financial decision. Let's be honest, Celtic fans are going to drive attendence in that particular match, and no one's convinced me that an MLS team can draw more than 30K, especially in an exhibition setting. Hey - guess what - 30K was the attendance for the Metrostars/newly crowned Champions League winners Bayern Munich match in the same Jersey venue as the Real/Roma match. There's absolutely nothing in it for ManU to play a MLS team - no extra revenue, no extra "building the brand" in the States. Sportscenter ignored the Real/Roma match, they'll ignore this tour, and they would have ignored any game that included a MLS team.
I have to laugh at all this talk of DC United beating Spurs. Does it actually matter to anyone that it was an "all star" game of mostly retired ex-Spurs players and that DC's scorer wasn't even a DC player?
Well, even the once might DCU couldnt slip one past fellow yank Kasey Keller, on the 2nd string GK let one in in the 2nd half.....
