Why isn't the Copa America held at the same time as the Euro Cup?

What exactly is keeping Conmebol from doing this? - it would solve the club vs. country conflict that arises every time (isn't that the reason they made the Copa a quadrennial tournament in the first place?) Is it pride? Do they refuse to share the spotlight with Uefa's Euro Cup?

Sure, the casual soccer fan outside of South America might be more interested in the Euro Cup, but presenting the SA fans with the best possible players is a trade-off worth taking in my opinion...

we answer that many times here..... copa libertadores (our UEFA club tourney) is ending 2wks before copa america, money and tvMoguls will not let both run at the same time, that will saturate the futbol tv audiences.......

copa america is being sold to over 140 countries, that will not be the same if they compete with euro cups......

My question: why the euros do not wait and run their championship in July instead of June? copa america has more tradition and its the oldest tourney of that category, after all!

YEAH EFER!!!!!! Stick it to those euro bastards!!!! It's UEFA clubs that bitch at South American nations everytime they have a friendly. What if players like Rooney, Figo or Ballack played in Brazil or Argentina and were harrased by their clubs every time they had to go back to play in Europe for their NTs.

That is what you said in the other thread, but you never answered my next question. How does Conmebol schedule the Copa Libertadores during WC years?
This seems to be a more reasonable explanation, although I personally don't see a whole lot of cross-over interest. Europeans don't really watch the Copa and I'm sure South Americans don't get terribly excited about the Euro Cup either...
Because June is usually when the World Cup is played. It only makes sense to hold the continetal championships in the same time frame...

    Thank you.

The reason I'm asking is because I'd love for the Copa to grow in status and importance. Having the best possible lineups is a must in my opinion, and I for one don't really see another solution next to a perfect alignment with the Euro Cup. Making the tournament a quadrennial event and holding it in the same year as the EC is a good start, but it doesn't really pay off if the Copa's held in the European preseason. In a perfect scenario each of the six confederations would hold their continental championships in the same time frame - in June every four years. I understand SA's frustration with the big Euro Clubs, but in the end European club soccer dictates the world schedule. I don't like it anymore than you guys...

    welcome here colombian!

I have family in Lucerna - lussane?(last name chevallier) cool kids, now vacationing in Medellin. By no means we try to be rude, is the frustration of euro clubs ruling all over the planet

to answer one of your questions, Conmebol does not have many changes year after yr for copa Libertadolares, they just go from the 1st wk in feb to the first wk in July.... then other tournaments, I may recall a small change when they had the WC,..... next yr is even worse, since they invitated 2 more mexie teams to make more TV money...is 36 teams, may be an extra week of play.

    welcome here
