Shouldn't the Italians in their place for finishing second in Euro 2000?

because I thought France is both the European champion and the host, Italy -- the runnerups -- will take their place. Bolivia did play in Confederation Cup as Copa America runnerups. The Czech Republic also......

I believe Italy (EURO 2000 runners-up) and then Germany (WC2002 runners-up) declined invitations so then they went to Turkey, the 3rd placed team in the World Cup.

I think it is because both the Germans and Italians turned down the invitation.

Hmmm... I am surprised that they went down the ladder in the World Cup.

No, the Italians weren't invited. Germany turned it down, so they invited Turkey who finished World Cup 2002 in 3rd place. America and New Zeland shouldn't be in this tournament. Because Mexico is better than the us, and its not a really hard thing to win the north american cup ( the opponents being canada, and jamaica, and some other islands)
Same with New Zealand ( they have to play australia and some little islands where they cant tell the difference between a ball and a coconut)
These two teams lower the quality of the confederations cup, and thats why good teams dont send their best players to it

that coconut comment is hillarious, and I agree with you CONCACAF is dominated by 2 countries.

I would keep quiet with the racist comments about the Pacific Island nations especially when you come from a third world country whose economy is only afloat because the International Monetary Fund bailed you out with millions to stop you becoming bankrupt.

    Crowdie.

    Go the Kiwis!!!

That has to be one of the DUMBEST comments ever. CONCACAF isn't great or anything, but of the 3 teams we sent to the World Cup, 2 of them made it past the first stage. Also, the Gold Cup invites 2 nations from other regions, so it isn't just the USA, Mexico and Costa Rica. This year, Brazil and Colombia will be in the Gold Cup.

Also, if the USA was so much worse than Mexico, then why do we NEVER lose to them? Don't say something when you don't know anything that you are talking about. The USA were World Cup quarterfinalists are is the best soccer nation in CONCACAF because we won the Gold Cup, went further in the World Cup than any CONCACAF nation, and we outplay Mexico every time we beat them, and almost always beat them.

I don't defend anything that guy said. But that was NOT racist. Ignorant, sure, I'll accept that 100%. His post is littered with ignorance and even some stupidity. But wait til there's a real reason to call foul next time...you don't see 'us here' Texans getting upset when someone says the most we know about a soccer pitch is what to use to fertilize it...

    Answer to the original question

Based on the prior information provided, this is how the draw should look:

    Host-France
    Defending Champion-France
    European Champion-France
    Asian Champion-Japan
    North American Champion-USA
    Oceania Champion-New Zealand
    African Champion-Cameroon
    South American Champion-Colombia

Of course, France can't send three teams, so two replacements had to be found. Since the tournament can't replace the "host team", the Defending Champion and European Champion slots must be replaced. It would be logical to replace the Defending Champion with the 2001 runner-up, but Japan is already in the tournament as Asian champions. Thus, Brazil gets the slot as World Cup champions. The European slot should have gone to the last runner-up, Italy. However, based on previous info, Italy declined (allegedly). Thus, the tournament turned to the highest European finishers in the last World Cup. Germany declined the invitation, so Turkey was next in line and accepted.

On a side note, France won World Cup '98, Euro 2000, and Confed Cup 2001. That's one heck of a treble!

He made reference to a race or group of people(s) (the Pacific Island nations) with a comment aimed to degrade or belittle ("some little islands where they cant tell the difference between a ball and a coconut"). Where I come from that is racist.

Yeah i guess but finishing 3rd in a world cup over rides finishing second in Euro2000 i suppose. :p
Either of the 2 nations would be fitting for them to compete in CC2003 but only 1 could play :p

I AGREE Crowdie but there is one little problem GO THE SOCCEROOS LOL :p

Although in the OFC and in Nth America they are dominated by 2 teams it is a global representation FIFA are trying to promote here. "For the good of the game" They say.

All the best of luck to the All Whites Crowdie! I hope they saw the CC2001 and were inspired to make some upsets.

Gee, you would think with Turkey being such a European football power and CONCACAF being such a non-entity that they don't deserve and invitation... that Turkey could have beaten a lowly CONCACAF team like Costa Rica in WC 2002.
