Why is the WWC in September, and not July or August?

Maybe they figured it'd be too hot for the 5pm (local time) games? And it's monsoon season at that time of year. I remember hearing about it extensively during the 2002 world cup in South Korea/ Japan

I asked a friend this question, and he wrote:

"There have been a ton of continental and FIFA events
this summer, and maybe FIFA were trying to limit overlap.
There was the Gold Cup, Copa America, U-17, and U-20
tournaments. I suppose FIFA are damned if they do and
damned if they don't. If they hold it earlier, then they
are accused of not giving the women their own time slot.
If they do, they get criticized for having it in September."

yea I don't know about that, the Swedish and true American WCs were held during the normal time but the 3 Chinese ones were all scheduled for fall, it must be the weather

if you think it's rainy NOW in china, play there in july and august and it's downpours continously...plus the heat would be worse too

the OLYMPICS next year are in SEPTEMBER too...

Yep. I think that's the reason. There were tons complaints from the Euro men's teams in '02 about the rain & humidity. wimps. I think the Euro clubs then cried about their players not getting enough rest before their seasons started after the WC, too.

That tourny brought us that "great" Nike 2 part jersey that was supposed to breathe & deal w/ rain better...remember the one that was hard to get back on after taking it off in celebration.

Oh and yes, Brennan, a world event should be organized around the USA's sporting calendar ::rolls eyes:: (yes, I know Euro club soccer is in season, too but that wasn't her point, I don't think...)

2002 WORLD CUP was in JUNE, just a bit prior to the WORST of the asian tropical season...

it can easily be 100 degrees with dew points over 80 in july and august...players can die in those conditions

believe it or not, it's better in september....

The 2014 World Cup in Brazil will be interesting. Probably in June/July.

Its winter in Brazil. Well, its winter in a part of the country. In the tropical part there never is winter.

And that will be the interesting part... just imagine... your team is playing in Fortaleza, 30 degrees C. Than the next match is in Porto Alegre or Curitiba... 2 degrees C!!!! With a lot of luck, a light snowfall its even possible during a match in Porto Alegre or Curitiba.

yes, but the particular thing about Brazil will be the big temperature differences between north and south of the country.
