http://geocities.com/worldfootballrankings2004/SouthAmericaTop122.html In the top 10 average attendences for clubs in South America Argentine clubs have 9 of the 10 spots. The best attendend Brazilian club only averages over 19,000. Brazil is a lot bigger than Argentina but the top Argentine clubs seem to have a lot more fans. Anyone know why this is ? http://geocities.com/worldfootballrankings2004/Top125Leagues.html According to that list the Japanese, Turkish, Algerian, Dutch, Indonesian and Russian leagues all get more people per game than the Brazilian league. Isn't that a little embarassing ?
Serious answer here... my guess is that Brazil has a lot more competitive clubs splitting the allegiance of fans than any other country. A high enough standard of play to attract substantial numbers of fans is probably maintained all the way down into the second tier of the major state leagues.
There are many factors but the biggest is crime. Many games are at night and many big cities in Brasil are not very safe at all after dark. With FIFA planning the 2014 World Cup there it should be interesting. Two debacles in a row after Soouth Africa. I have a friend down in Rio who is urging my wife and I to visit as soon as possible because pretty soon it will be too dangerous for us to contemplate a visit. I would be VERY CAREFUL about going to a soccer game in brasil.
In one word: mismanagement. From both CBF and the clubs. Basically, the fans are treated like ***t. Just take my example: I've been boycotting (in the sense of buying merchandising, really tried to stop watching matches on TV but I couldn't,hehe) the NT for 9 years (purchased a jersey in 1995) and my club for over 7 years ( purchased a cap in early 1997) and can't foresee it ending in the near future. It's a pity, we could have one of the, if not THE greatest league on Earth. However, with the kind of people that have been in charge of our professional game in the last 2 or 3 decades that will NEVER, NEVER happen, unfortunatelly. Sad.
Ok, but all this sh!t you said doesnt make any sense. First, 90% of the games in brazil are in the afternoon. Second, the danger in brazil is exactly the same in the morning and in the night, and its not exagerated as you say. I live in Sao Paulo since I was born (Im 20) and Ive never been robbed in my life. About the argentinian clubs, I doubt Boca Juniors has half number of suporters that Sao Paulo, for example, has. The two main reasons for low attendance in brazil are: 1- No confort at the stadiums (No parking places, no good food, dirtyness, difficulty to buy the tickets, etc...) 2- Violence by some groups of supporters (like the hooligans) that use to punch whoever wears a jersey which is not his teams. And it also depends on the competition and the team moment. Sao Paulo attendance in Libertadores 2004 was higher than real madrid attendance in Champions League, for example. Morumbi Stadium got packed all the matches.
In Brazil there are less soccer fans then Argentina because most of the people are out commeting crimes there.
You idiot still around? I thought you got tired of being BS little bitch. No one wants to read what you write, just give up trying to be someone interesting and go back to your bed so your father can touch you.
Look now we have these F u c k i n Brazilian indians making quotes that have been made up. Pathetic, i can see why other brazilians hate you.
Nothing says "Great thread" like GianPaolo and Thomas Flannigan posting on the same page. Now all we need is that wang MIGkiller to post and the triangle will be completed. Kinda like the Tri-Force in Legend of Zelda.
Right in time, Treelover. Brazilian stadiums have such low attendances because half of the fans have died in their way for reasons like being bitten by poison snakes in the streets, kidnaped and stabbed by howler monkeys, trampled by favela riots or malaria fits. I know this because that's what the Simpsons episode about Brazil said.
To put things into perspective , here are some facts: The 1950 world cup in Brazil is second in average attendance only to USA94. 1950 (60,672) - 1994 (68,991) http://www.histcopas.cjb.net/ Brazil still holds the single match attendance record in the Cup history: 174,000 in the final. http://www.fifa.com/images/pdf/IP-301_09A_alltime.pdf
I think the discussion is about why attendance in the league is subpar, especially for a great soccer nation like Brazil.
There are several factors including the brasilian economic, stadium security, and that any young talent is sent rightaway to Europe.
