I just really cant get it why man u are highly rated in the u.k but really not as highly regarded in other countries, I grew up a man u fan but as a fan who breathes eats and loves the game, their style of play is old fashioned and every one in the c-league wants to play them, there is a poll in soccernet as to who will win the premier league and overwhellmingly every one voted for Man u yet, over the past few season history tells us that arsenal are a season ending team.

I don't know that everyone is wanting to play Man U. Considering that they pretty much dominated their second stage group and seem to be on form at home and in Europe right now I wouldn't want to face them. With the quality they have throughout their squad I'd say they're as much a threat as anyone (probably more) to make the final of the CL.

well, for a start, the small matter of seven titles and a European Cup probably colours some people's judgement on the issue. Can't see it myself. ;)

As to the response to them in Europe, it's true that they have never established themselves as truly fearsome opponents, a la, for instance, the Milan side of a decade ago or the Real Madrid side that has collected three European Cups in the past four years. But to say that "everyone wants to play them" is probably a touch of bravado.

And in any case, in this instance Real Madrid get that honour in the Quarters. Should be interesting.

looking t the last 8 i can only say that they can surely beat Ajax, yet in a year to 2 ajax will be back to the top in europe, but the issue is ajax are not being touted as contenders for the c-league yet man u are, so why cant Ajax history preceed them.they have won the european cup too.

Over the last two seasons Utd's style of play has changed considerably. The close passing, attacking play of 3 seasons ago - very effective in the Premiership but less effective in Europe - has been replaced with a more patient game - a greater defensive stability with Veron and Beckham probing the opposition defences with long passes. They're now much more vulnerable to the high aggression pressing game of the Premiership, particularly from weaker clubs who rely on that, but more successful in the lower paced European matches. This characteristic being epitomised by the performances of Veron.

I would say that Utd are now more feared in Europe than the Premiership as a result but previously I think their game was seen as somewhat "crude" - relying on pace rather than skill - outside of the UK.

...in that oh-so-vital-to-win pre-season friendly. And that means what, exactly?

I think everone saying they wanted united was just talk, United said they wanted Real. Fergie plays mind games.
Considering they beat Juve 3-0 away, not many would really fancy playing them.

Spanish and Italians love to ignore and put down English clubs because of the physical nature of our game. They think defense splitting passes from the centre of the pitch with pacy strikers not afraid to run at the defense is a crude style. That's up to them. To me the south american influence in their game has created a win at all costs attitude where cheap tricks are acceptable.

United, to their credit have adapted to european competitions. They've got to the 1/4 finals 7 years in a row.

Arsenal haven't and have consequently been knocked at the group stages too many times. They just can't win big games at home.

You have a point here. Let me translate for folks who don't understand scouse. :)
RVN, OGS and Paul Scoles can hide a flop much better than Jeffers and Pires (who got a yellow last time he tried it...) :D

the question I always ask myself is are United as good to be called real madrid's peers, I know that this will be answered in the next couple of weeks, which I think will show that there is still a big gap(sorry thats the reality)

    True enough.
But, thats not a reason for them to not be highly regarded.Regardless of where they stand in comparison to Madrid the're still a dominating team.

Man U's dip in form last season and part of this season in the Prem seem to me to be due to their desire to adapt better to the continental game played in the CL. Not that it is any better than the Prem style, but just 'different'. The past couple of years Man U have been looking at different types of players to pick up than in years past such as Veron and Forlan: south americans more suited to the slower build up played in Spain and Italy. All the while trying to stay competitive in the Prem, with its fast and furious (and quite entertaining) style. They have experienced some growing pains in doing so, but I think they are starting to come together under Sir Alex's evil plan, and unfortunately for me at least... it could spell doom for opponents in both the CL and the Prem.

Maybe because Man Utd is the only english team who won the Champions league in the 90s. Man Utd made semi final last season while arsenal was out in group stage and Liverpool lost against Leverkusen. This year United are the only english team who made Knockout stage of the Champions league. And Arsenal a season ending team in the past few seasons????.. 99 was United, 2000 was united 2001 was again United. A win in Highbery or even a draw there could make United EPL champ again

Really, what a stupid question that's more than likely based in an anti-Premier league opinion or pro-Italian/Spanish bias. ManU are rated highly because they're a great team. To say that they shouldn't be rated just b/c Real Madrid have won more is just sheer stupidity and the opinion of an immature person.

Dont forget the financial influence on teams, such as marketing & advertising. Man U got the money to spend on big players that could or wont mix in well with the rest of the team, if they do, then they have a starting spot....if not, then they play somewhat and get sold. Man U are the "Yankees" of the EPL, big names - big bank - and yeah, lots of winning. But also, most clubs on paper cant be compared, its on the field that they get the title of competitors and in the EPL, many teams are competitors, Man U has just been doing the right thing to stay on track. I wonder if a bad-going team like Sunderland were given millions of dollars/pounds to spend and some new staff, how well they would do??

It depends a lot on who they buy. This year apart, Sunderland have been the third best attended team in the country. They do have a fair bit of cash coming in, but they just wasted it. Man Utd's success has not been based on simply outbidding everyone else because they have the most money, they have bought well. A lot of other clubs have spent fortunes and got nowhere near the title.
