  2. Guess the sound of the beer being thrown got picked up by the gigantic boom mic in front of the "Cauldron" and broadcast over the PA. The Zardmeister must be pissed. And the Mystics, well, they got beer all over their chant instuction sheets.

What the hell is the big deal about some brew being slung around? It's a soccer game....the "Cauldron" should stop being a bunch of "birds" and try to be "geeza's".

"It's all about money, ain't a damn thing funny..." - Grandmaster Mel and the Furious Five

Given the current paranoid state of American society, our traditional litigiousness and the recent antics with fans attacking players in baseball not to mention the various problems Section 8 has had in the past with stadium security, I don't think this is "funny" per se.

Sadly, soccer fans are already under the general microscope thanks to the sports media's depictions of us as "hooligans" (and, yes, I know all about the US sports media's double standards regarding "soccer violence" and other sports violence but there's no use in whining about it). Organized supporters sections at MLS games are even more visible and we are being watched closely whether we like it or not.

Also, like it or not, teams are going to follow their financial bottom line. While we all like to think of ourselves as "the real fans" especially compared to Mr. & Mrs. Suburbs and their 3.5 mewling brats, the sad fact remains that MLS makes more $$$ from them as a group than from us as a group. So if we try to force any team's hand, that team will probably side with the quiet fans and not us. That's business in the real world, folks.

Really? As I recall, some of The Fire's most loyal fans threatened never to come to another home game because the team asked them not to swear after goal kicks by the opposing team.

Remember, you have to share your team with a lot of people who aren't just like you.

I think that translates to women and men.

  10. I think that was supposed to be a clever allusion to the sort of hooligan mentality that would find such a situation amusing. The problem is that it wasn't clever.

Although hitting Cobi Jones with a beer is funny as hell, concern from the club isn't surprising. The problem is the "rules" enacted in the KC supporters section. No foul language or "ridiculous behavior?" That's going too far out of the way for soccer mom and the church league kids if you ask me.

Bingo. While they now advertise our section to allow anyone to stand in the section, they watch us like Hawks and blame the Mystics for everything even though not everyone in the section is a Mystic. Arrowhead security doesn't need another excuse to go on huge power trips, (I know some of you are already familiar with Arrowhead security ;)) and this "ridiculous behavior" thing is like the organization giving them permission to do so. Pretty soon we'll all get in trouble for the "Who's Your Daddy, Referee?" chant because somebody begs fan assistance and security to "think of the children".

Last game I got warned for merely pointing and looking in the general direction of the security guard during a YSA chant. Guess I hurt his feelings :)

  14. I know it was already mentioned in this thread, but last season there was the big debate over the YSA chant - Did the threat of losing the the Sect 8 crowd really make the stadium officials back down? If so, woo hoo for section 8...

Hatred for Cobi will get you nowhere. Ask the Mexicans and now the politely clapping Cauldron.

Well they were pissed again Sunday and there are signs instructing 'no swearing' in section 8 now.

Not that it made a whole lot of difference.

That said, I think that chant has become beyond dumb now, but i think the fact it has been turned into a faux controversy has made it more attractive for some.

With all the making fun of the Cauldron aside (mikes, chant sheets, etc.), we do what we can, and I think fans on BigSoccer should appreciate that no matter how or what we do.

I know some of you know what our security is like, and it sounds like over the years Chicago's security has been the same. Also on the KC boards you can read about a guy that got removed from our last game (right after the beer was thrown) because a little kid in an adjacent section accused him of "exposing himself". By all accounts by those around this guy (he was in the Cauldron), he did nothing of the sort. Just another example of how we're watched, and any accusation against us must be true since we're hooligans.

I know many of you have visited KC and been removed from games. Any specific stories of getting tossed when you actually didn't do anything? Or have they always been pretty much deserved? Earlier this season when the flares were lit after it was apparent you had defeated us at home, I asked the security guard what he was going to do about it (since if I did that, he'd have me in cuffs and gone in 5 seconds flat). He said nothing, he'd take care of me before he took care of them (the Chicago fans).

    Ben,

Section 8 has had its own problems with mutton-headed "security" at Soldier Field. By the end of our first stay there, though, things had pretty much been ironed out largely because the Fire organization itself, spear-headed by Mr. Wilt, actively worked WITH both the supporters groups and with stadium security to establish well-defined rules as to what was and wasn't acceptable in Section 8. For the most part, all sides have kept up their ends of the bargain and as a result we now have more privileges than most supporters groups in MLS.

The difference, to me, seems to have been the Fire's attitude towards its fans. While most teams' front offices seem to despise their own hard-core fans and appear committed to making life for these fans as sucky as possible, the Fire have actually wanted the crazies in Section 8. Of course, their help isn't 100% altruistic. The Fire gets to use Section 8 as a marketing tool (huh huh huh huh huh.... He said "tool". Huh huh huh huh...) in ad campaigns to show how much fun an MLS game can be. Mr. Wilt and friends have consistently been the smartest front office with regards to using their supporters groups to sell the game day experience and it is really a shame that other teams seem so hell bent on destroying their own supporters groups out of fear of upsetting Mr. and Mrs. Suburbia and their offspring who are a much bigger source of $$$ than us supporters groups, truth be told. The Chicago experience is proof that as long as both sides are smart and mature enough to understand their roles and work together an active, visible supporters group can be an asset and not just a liability.

Of course, given the potential for excesses, Section 8 (like all supporters areas) is still watched much, much more closely than fans in the expensive seats. I do not find this unreasonable as long as the "security" doesn't become an active counterproductive agent causing trouble as they have done in the past at Soldier Field and at other teams (it sounds like the "security" at RFK is notorious for being part of the problem and not the solution).

Maybe you can point out the Section 8 experience to the Wizards' management and tactfully suggest that working WITH the supporters group can provide them with more positives than working against you. I wish you luck.

  22. I agree - last season I even heard Rev's fans doing it on the television. I've heard a lot of people say the same thing regarding the YSA chant, but has there been any real effort to change it? Or is it just people bitching? A good replacement is all it would take. Not that any of this is related to the thread subject.

The YSA chant seems to be dying a slow death.
I've heard half-hearted attempts at it in the South end. It seems like something people will do once, and then when they've got their snicker in, move on to...I dunno what.
