The english national team since 1966 did not make any final.Whether Euro Cup or World cup. Why did Spain, Italy, Germany and France achieved results during the span (1994 - 2010) and England couldnt? Spain - won euro 2008 Germany - WC02 finals, EURO 08 finals, Euro96 winners ITaly - WC06 winners, EURO00 Finals, WC94 Finals France - WON WC98, Euro00 winners, WC06 Finals Possibly Holland even achieved better results then them. They made semifinals of euro 2004 and euro 2000.Plus semifinals of WC98. Not to forget Portugal as well. WC 06 Semifinals, Euro04 finals, Euro00 semifinals. And in each of those three ocassions Portugal defeated the English NT. Actually since Euro 1996 England didnt make any semifinals. WC94 Did not qualify Euro96 semifinals WC98 Last 16 Euro00 First Round WC02 Quarterfinals Euro04 Quarterfinals WC06 Quarterfinals Euro08 did not qualify WC10 Last 16 What could be the reason behind the english failure, despite the huge popularity of their league worldwide?
Spain have NEVER been in the world cup final. Holland have never won it. Spain were awful in tournaments until 2008. France have been awful for most of their history part apart from Platini in the 80's and 1998-2001.
Maybe they're just not that good... The league has nothing to do with the NT. Look at Spain. Their league has always been among the very best, yet before 2008 the only thing they ever won was the 1964 Euro, where the biggest and best opponents chose to not even participate. Other than that, Spain used to be notorious chokers time and again. A good league doesn't automatically translate to a good NT, good individuals don't necessarily translate into a good team.
I think Beckenbauer gave the answer. No real turn over in young talent. The EPL is full of foreign nationals who won't be playing for England in a World Cup. In fact, they wil play against them. This puts young, talented English players who aren't the best in the world but still pretty damn good, in a difficult predicament, as all the other top leagues are pretty foreign to en English man. Bundisliga = German, La Liga = Spanish etc. Different cultures, different languages. The EPL will slowly kill off the national team.
Seria A is no better. Infact past coaches would only pick Italian players playing in Italy. Italian talent is dying as fast as English. Inter won the Champions league with 1 Italian who didn't play much. Italians don't go abroad much either.
And look at how well they did in this WC. Heh. I honestly don't know enough about Serie A to actually confirm what you say is true. It's not too big of a problem if only one or two teams is mostly foreign nationals-- it's when almost every team is.
Close this thread. It's nothing but a gloat. Yeah top boy, kick and rush. Remind me how Germany's long ball first goal came? He has a point with the league. I'd gladly kick the foreigners out of our league. We need to put ourselves first for once. Boot the foreigners out of the league and ******** this 'special' alliance with the yanks.
I don't think that's really the issue so much as the fact that they find it harder to get playing time. Players in the premier league have to be the finished article. They don't get a chance to develop. And sadly, a lot of younger players would rather be a "star" in the reserves of a top side than playing first team football on lower wages elsewhere. The conundrum is that English football probably is training players better than in the past with the academies that now exist, and the England team is certainly no less talented than teams of 20 or 30 years ago, but less players seem to be being produced overall. Overall though, it comes down to training. We just don't train players with the technical ability of other nations. And I don't just mean top nations. Slovenia's players looked more comfortable on the ball than England's. They weren't better overall, but their basic ability to pass and keep possession was an embarrassment to England. Technique isn't everthing, but if you have good technique, it'll make doing everything else much simpler. Also, we have a "magic bullet" obsession. Whether it's the old Charlie Hughes "winning formula" approach, demanding players with heart, or the flavour of the month, players with pace, we seem to be permanently looking for something that will allow us to compete with more skillful players, without ever addressing why those players are more skillful in the first place.
Well based on your post maybe you can only make a performance-based case that in recent history England are at best the 6th-best country in Europe. If you're only 6th-best in a region, once you take account of all the other talented countries in the world, you're pretty much going to only do quarterfinals/round of 16 at best every time with occasional flameouts (like not making the tournament like they did for Euro '08). Then why don't they loan them to some Championship team? If you're a Chelsea or Arsenal youth player, why doesn't your team loan you out to some other team also in London? To add to this, the pseudo-English style countries nearby that play the same style haven't done anything either compared to what they used to. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland were never world-beaters but even compared to what they used to be they have declined. Scotland Qualified for World Cup 6 out of 7 times in 1974, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990, missed it in 1994, and qualified again in 1998. Qualified for Euros in 1992 and 1996. Have not qualified for any tournament in 12 years. Wales Too small to really apply here but have not qualified for anything since Euro 1976. Northern Ireland Made World cup in 1982 and 1986. Have not done anything since.
They have a league that attracts a lot of foreign talent which forces many young English players to ride the pine. It's happening in Italy as well. These young homegrown players would rather stay close to home and earn a nice big paycheck than go abroad to a lesser league where they would be a star player but would have to adjust to a foreign culture and maybe even take a pay cut.
Good point. So it boils down to Premier League youngsters not being given enough chances. Fans and Chairmen want instant results. There are tons of mediocre foreign players who are no better then young English players they are replacing. Also the price of English players needs to drop so more teams buy them.
Germany, Italy, Spain, France, Holland, England....about right. Many do, but playing at a lower level will only develop a player so far. They also tend to go out on loan for at most a year. The problem comes when they go back. We had Ryan Bertrand from Chelsea last season. A promising player, but one who'd do far better in the premier league than in Chelsea's reserves. They probably have declined a bit, but the smaller and/or less established nations have become far better. It's more that they've been overtaken.
kicking foreigners out of the league would be a financial suicide. Not only would the EPL lose any kind of "premier" status, but all the large teams would never recoup the kind of money they've invested. They need to sell their shirts in Asia, their TV rights abroad, and they will only do it with the best foreigner players on the team precisely for the foreign markets. The EPL would likely fall in status to Scotland/Dutch leage levels, and that would be too uneconomical for the large teams.
Like others have noted, it really comes down to a lack of player development. The EPL focus on big-money stars and a belief that pretty much any foreigner is better than a young English player is hindering the development of new talent and choking off the pipeline to the national team. Consider the following: - England has not developed a single world-class keeper since Peter Shilton (i.e. 20 years). - not a single Arsenal player made the 2010 England roster, and only two Liverpool players - there were only four players under the age of 25 on the 2010 England roster (Joe Hart, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, and Wayne Rooney. One was the 3rd-choice keeper, and two of the other three play the same position. Compare that to the German squad, who featured six players from the 2009 team that won the U-21 European championship, all of whom play regularly for their club teams. If England thinks things are dire now, wait until 2014, when Lampard (35), Gerrard (34), and Terry (33) will all have retired from international play and Wayne Rooney will be their only world-class player remaining.
You have to understand that the EPL is largely a foreigners' league. How many really good EPL players are actually English? There's your answer.
The English style of football is no good why do you think no noteworthy English player or coach is plying their trade abroad. Our brand of kick and rush has been consistently been proven ineffective yet our ideas and thinking never changes. We never seem to learn and are never going too.
The English national team has failed because they have been over rated all these decades for the simple fact that they have a league which is dominated by non English players. Anyone who is English is elevated to god status when in fact they are not as great as their media makes them out to be. How many Brits have made it in La Liga or Serie A? Being Italian and seeing our dismal showing at this World Cup, I have seen the future of Italian football going the way of the Brits. Inter had only one Italian (Materazzi) who was basically a cheerleader the whole season. Im not happy with Lippis selections like everyone else but as far as the criticism of selecting older players and Juve men, his pickings were slim since for the past few years the influx of foreign players killed their national team. This will not change because of money so If Spain or Germany dont win it all this year get used to seeing South America win every world cup for here on out along with a African team or two.
The correct answer is, there is nothing particularly wrong with English Football. There are only 5 teams Brazil, Italy, Germany, France and Argentina that have reached the last four of the world cup more than once since 1982. Of these 5, two (France and Argentina) had that special player (Zidane Platini, and Maradona) who took them to glory. As far as European championship goes! That's always been more of roll of dice. For years Italy did not take it seriously, and more often than not, Euroes for most big teams have been time of transition and rebuilding for the next WC. So we have seen teams like Czech, Greece, and Denmark reach the finals or win it, while teams like Germany (In 2000 and 2004), Italy and France etc. fail to make it out of group stages.
Idiot coaches and clownish goalkeepers. Put Hiddink in charge of these nitwits and they are guaranteed semi-finalists.
If English football is so good then why are always observing other countries methods to produce world class native players. You never see the situation in reverse. When was the last time an English coach won any tops honours domestically or in Europe difficult isn't. Most of our English players can barely speak English let alone have the intelligence to learn a new language and adapt to a different style because most fail Michael Owen, Gazza, Jermaine Pennant etc. Our players are clearly technically and tactically deficient the English disease of not been able to pass and retain the ball.
I should add that the notably worthless Englihs media is an enabler in the entire process. They always like to make it out as if only " x" or "y" we would be world beaters, and that the players and talent is there for harvest. Right now, they are probably busy penning varies screeds that implicate a their worthless coach and Terry's errant weiner giving everyone on the team some kind of venereal disease.
