So wait! Affellay was the worst player on the field for Holland? lol

Holland's attack looked strong against Denmark while Affellay was out there, apart from the actual finishing (which is where RVP and Robben are to blame).

what did riquelme in this game ???not much, like others from both teams.....virtuel the first shot in this game for argentina was 1 goal...in minute 47 from a cornerkick, out of nothing......germany had 3 shots in the first half with ballack the best chance with a header thats it.a .tactical game the for a big part.....germany 1970 alone between minute 65-90 against italy has produced 5 times the goalchances argentina had in 90 minutes 2006 against germany....,total outplayed italy, plus a denid penalty too in this timspan of 25 minutes..if riquelme was out in minute 70 ,germany created 1 minute later with a bad pass a big goalchance for argentina....lehmann virtuel had nothing to do....the first 90 minutes wasnt that great and the extratime not much better... argentina outplaying germany??seriously what game have you seen???

Brazil from 2002 is different than the one from 1994. And you say that it's not their fault that they produce tons of good players?

How many NTs from 2002 were the same as in 1994? Hint: look at the WC squads from both years....

I already asked him that. He said "well Spain wasn't EXACTLY the same team either in 2008 and 2012". So apparently its the same situation.

Anyway we should carry this in different thread.

My point, unless the thread clearly indicate Spain (with core as Puyol Xavi Iniesta Torres Villa Silva Cecs Xabi Cassilas .... ) then it's different story. Other than that ... people mght say WHO COUNTS if Brazil won 5 WC's as they won with 5 different teams? is that your arguement? LOL

and whats your opinion why gerd müller 1974 was ranked balon dor only in position 7?? gerd müller barely beat gadocha who was ranked 8...

gerd müller won the bundesliga, eurochampionscup and worldcup 1974...how many players in europe have archived that???he was topscorer in bundesliga, topscorer in eurochampionscup and scored in the later stages wc(yugoslavia, sweden, poland, holland) 3 goals had 2 assists and 1 created penalty..gamewinner in wc final and gamewinner against poland, plus a wrongfully recalled goal in final too..his castrol ranking 9.70, the 5th best worldcup 1974 ....he had his best career eurochampionscup game in replay final against athletico madrid 1974 with 2 excellent goals, hitting with a header the bar too , and he nearly had a assist too but hoeness ,assistet from müller missed with a shot the emty goal....in bundesliga he scored in week 33 the 1:0 gamewinning goal where has sealed the german championship.the reason bayern munich sealed the championship in week 33 , gladbach did loose 1:0 away, jupp heynckes wasting a draw, missed a penalty.....if heynckes dont miss the penalty and gerd müller dosent score the goal, gladbach hypothetic had the best chance to win the bundesliga for the reason gladbach in the last game of the season hosted bayern munich and bayern munich had to play prior the eurochampionscup final...the first game ec final has ended after 120 minutes with a draw and 2 days later munich won 4:0 against madrid....the last game of the season bayern did loose 5:0 in gladbach..bayern has leaved the stadium in brussel late in the night , celebrated the win and only 16 hours later played gladbach, a impossible situation ...3 games in 4 days.a .dead tired munich team...impossible scenario today....imagine heynckes is sucessful with his penalty in week 33 and gerd müller dont score the 1:0 late in this game against offenbach....byee by championship for munich.....

    however thats not all...
1974 bayern has played magdeburg in eurochampionscup for the 74/75 season...magdeburg was cup winners cup champion 1974, bayern eurochampionscup winner 1974...it was indirectly a european supercup 2 leg series too...magdeburg due politcal reason has not played munich for a offiziel european supercup 2 leg series ...so the draw bayern against magdeburg was funny...gerd müller in this 2 leg series has demolished magdeburg with 4 goals...bayern won 3:2 at home , bayern with 2 müller goals and a owngoal of magdeburg...away in magdeburg müller has played with a broken toe ,mostly in midfieled, he still scored both gamewinning goals , bayern won 2:1, there was olso a action where he in the own 6 yardbox , last fieldplayer of the team, has tackled away the ball from jürgen sparwassers feet and saved with this action a potentional magdeburg goal...i cant imagine a messi or ronaldo today are used to play with a broken toe...

müller has scored in 8 eurochampionscup games 1974 8 goals,+ first final 1 wrongfully recalled goal, hit in semfinal and final bar and post, contributed in sofia a important away goal too , assist to roth where was fouled in the penaltbox, breitner scoring the penalty...

and such a player was voted 7 ranked in balon dor , barely beat gadocha...??lato,neskens,breitner,deyna ranked above gerd müller.....

there is often mentioned bayern munich weak 1974/75 bundesliga season where has affected the voting....seriously isnt that enough and what did the others 1974/75???a lato, gadocha, deyna ect in nationale championship and europeancup??...

bayern was 14th ranked in the first half of the 1974/75 season....a horible ranking.....but nobody knows in this 17 bayern bundesliga games, bayern beat 5 teams where was ranked in the top 6 in bundesliga season 1974/75.....

here the top 6 in bundesliga 1974/75
    1.gladbach champion
    2.hertha
    3.frankfurt
    4.hamburg
    5.köln
    6.düsseldorf
    here the results:
gladbach-bayern 1:2 (müller assistet the gamewinner)
bayern-hertha berlin 2:1 (müller assistet the gamewinner)
bayern-frankfurt 2:1 (müller scored both goals)
    bayern-köln 6:3 (müller scored 1 goal,created 2 penalties)
    bayern-düssedorf 4:0 (müller 3 goals, 1 assist)
    bayern-hamburg 0:1
the weakness of bayern munich was the bad results against teams ranked 7th-18 in the first half of the season....

however gerd müller in 16 bundesliga games second half 1974, had 10 goals,7 assists and 2 created penaltys..directly has contributed for 19 of bayern munichs 27 goals in this 16 games...inclusive excellent stats against topteams...

in addition he had this great 2 magdeburg games and 2 german cup games where bayern munich won, in both german cup games müller scored crucial goals...a 3:2 win(1 goal) and a 2:0 win(scored the gamewinner, assisters of the other 3 goals are unknown)

the endresult for müller second half 1974

20 games played ......16 goals,7 assists and 2 created penaltys...directly contributed in this 20 games for insane 67 % of bayern munichs goals.,,,what pitiful season half for him......lol..

My opinion: he is too low.

I don't see why Neeskens (despite his 5 goals at World Cup as midfielder) or Breitner should be ranked above him in that year. What is in your opinion the reason that Breitner was ranked above him?

On the other hand, I think it is fair that Lato was ranked above Müller in that year. Lato was topscorer and some even say that he was just as good as Cruijff in that World Cup... I think that we should give players from second-tier nations a fair amount of honor. Lato had barely a chance to show himself at another platform, but he did show his qualities on the most important platform.

My opinion. With emphasis on the word opinion.

First I reccommend you go back and RE-watch the games in group stage (SWE )
Both Ibra and Melberg got 1 man of Macth each. Besides FACTS:

    - Ibra was selected as the ONLY striker of the tournament (by Germany Zonal) - in fact he scored 2goals/10shots as MUCH betetr than CR7 3/36, or Balotelli 3/26, Iniesta 1goal/18, Van persie 1/13, or worst Benzama 0goals/16 ...

    - Melberg got 1goal+ 1ass and 1 great save in that match. At 34, playing as a DF for an "underdogs" team his performance would give great example for the youngters ...

2nd bold, you kept on singing the SAME BS/
I rated Zidane + Ronaldo of late 90- mid 2000 > many of older greats in past (older era) like Kopa Kocsis 50's Charlton 70's, Van Basten, Gullit 80's ...

You clearly never play football! the (new ) balls help players in SHOOTING (more power and less deflect ..) in order to SCORE more goals - that's FIFA and UEFA mission = more goals = more entertainment for fans!!! YET players in this present ERA SUCKS - they defy the science LOL

I'm a bit late, but still...

The bold part is the key part, Estel.

In general I agree that today there is a certain lack of competition for the elite of today's football. I mean, for instance, during the 80s or 90s you had a greater number of players of a Messi/C. Ronaldo caliber. Today we have just these two. That's the main difference.

Howewer, I don't think there is much sense comparing the number of Golden Ball awards of all these players, even hypothetically by having in mind the rule changes in 1995. Here I agree more with comme. Simply because the global state of today's football is totally incomparable whit what we have seen during some previous eras. You said it in the last part of the post, which I bolded.

Let's face it, during the last years, all these awards consists of giving the first places to the best players of the best (or better the richest) clubs. And exactly during that period these best teams are the same year by year with an extremely dominant Barcelona. Today's elite is concentrated in only a few clubs which are at the top for that reason, and consequently the best players of these clubs will inevitably come in France Football's first places, no matter what they win or how they perform in the WC.

Try to imagine if Ronaldo had stayed at Barca in 1997 without being affected by a serious injury. That Barca then (by today's standards) buys Zidane and Rivaldo. Most probably these two would never receive any awards because of being shadowed by Ronaldo, just like Xavi or Iniesta. At the same time, Real Madrid buys Figo and Henry, who for the same reason, despite putting up great numbers and games, are coming year by year behind Ronaldo. The same situation is seen today (Barca and Real have practically the WHOLE today's elite pool). The domination of these two clubs makes a domination of it's best their players in these awards.

That was NEVER a case in any previous era. No club in those years had a depth as as big as we can see today at Barca/Real, thus the elite pool was far more largely concentrated. That's why you had no domination of a Ronaldo or Zidane or Platini when looking at those lists.

This example just tells me that today the WC is not the main criteria when giving these awards or better, it's not anymore the be-all-end-all of football in general.

I mean, just take a look at the 1990 list. I hope you are not going to tell me that the year where a Schillaci comes second is more competitive than a year where C. Ronaldo finishes second or third. Do you really think that Van Basten's absence in the 1990 list is a consequence of an extremely competitive era or of a great number of players who performed better than the Dutch? Or that it's a consequence of a great disappointment at the WC? No way that Des Walker had a better club season that year. The point is that his absence did NOT happen because of a great competition. A different criteria (incomparison with the recent yerars) is the only reason.

Another example which gives more ground to the above is the 1958 year. Despite an excellent Di Stefano's club season, he didn't get a single vote in 1958 just because he didn't participate at the WC. And I don't think anyone would tell that his absence is a consequense of a great competition.

Why did Keegan win in 1978? I.e. he did it in a 'classic era'. What makes him the exception?

Some even doubt whether 1978 was his best year, arguably not.

I'm a huge Rivaldo fan, but I still think Xavi is comparable. Different types of players, but in terms of quality they can be mentioned in the same breath. Why not? Both were key players in getting their country a World Cup. Rivaldo was also surrounded by great teammates at his club ... half the Dutch national team + Figo + Litmanen + Rivaldo should have had more success, especially in Europe where they always fell short - sometimes way way short. So, as great as he was, Rivaldo is not above criticism.

By the way, its tough to compare eras but one thing for sure: If you are a raging alcoholic and still one of the best football players in the world.... well, sorry to say but that is a weak era!

So 1955-1972 = the real weak era. You can't get away with such behavior in 2012. Or at least I don't see any prime examples. ;)

I still don't see how can you conclude that many players from the 80s and 90s were of Messi/C.Ronaldo caliber?

I understand what you are saying here. But today's clubs like Barca and Real M have more financial power than they did back in 80s or 90s. Interestingly, it was Real M who in 2000 started the Galacticos trend of buying the best players. First it was Figo, then Zidane, then Ronaldo. In 1997 Barca sold Ronaldo to Inter, because he wanted to go. With the money from the sale, the club bought Rivaldo. I'm not sure if Barca would've bought Rivaldo if Ronaldo wasn't sold. It's just that top clubs back in the day had different transfer market strategy compared to today.

There is also another thing. The current Barca team has Messi, Xavi and Iniesta, which weren't bought but rather developed within the club. Valdes, Puyol, Busquets, Pedro and Pique were too ( they bought back Pique for 5m only). Alves, Villa and Sanchez are the only big buys the club has made that have worked out. On Fabregas, the jury is still undecided, but let's also count him in too. That's only from the current team. Would any of those guys be considered as bigger players (winning awards, etc.) if they weren't bought by Barca? I'm not so sure. Before the current team, would Ronaldinho or Eto'o have won any awards if they stayed to play at PSG and Mallorca? Today's Barca is an example of buying suitable players (not necessarily the best players) to compliment the great players they have developed themselves within the club.

In 1995, Ajax has a great squad of players. But sadly for them, all of them left for other clubs, some of them even left for free because of the Bosman ruling. That rule changed the market a lot, btw.

That's correct. Now it's easier to follow every player when he plays for his club. Everyone has an opportunity to judge players better on their club performances.

Either that or some players just didn't perform at their best. 1992 wasn't that good of year for Van Basten either, but he won the Ballon D'or and FIFA WPOY. My countryman, Stoichkov was robbed of both awards IMO. He won Ballon D'or later in 1994.

yeah right ... as it's coming off a "Barca fan" in this era

NO its' NOT even close to be comparable!
1-While Xavi gets his a$$ sweating over 90minstes in every game, he hardly won a game himself. Rivaldo won many games on his own with just a split of seconds

2- Xavi relied on Iniesta + Busquet backing up and relied on (Villa, Etoo) Messi to score goals off his plays. Rivaldo relied on NO ONE, but himself.

3- Compare Xavi to Rivaldo is like compare Redondo to Zico/Platini/ (in a vit higher extent)

Rivaldo also played for Barca. So any bias is cancelled-out. If anything I'm bias in favor of Rivaldo because I liked his playing-style more.

No player wins matches all on his own. That's just a bullshit argument people use to make the more attack-minded player seem more dominant.

    On Second Thoughts: Rivaldo

He is in danger of being remembered as a cheat and a mardy bum, but Brazil's bandy-legged genius was the most unstoppable footballer since Maradona
    • [IMG]
Rivaldo - the greatest since Maradona? Photograph: Nuno Correira/Getty Images/Allsport
A common, if slightly cringeworthy, observation of pundits in this country is that, if you could marry British will with continental skill, you would have the perfect footballer. Such a mixed recipe was thrillingly in evidence in Diego Maradona. Since then, however, perhaps only Rivaldo has fused the two qualities. Yet when we discuss soccer's AM (After Maradona) greats, Zinedine Zidane invariably comes out on top, with Rivaldo well back among the pack. While it would be dubious to argue that Rivaldo was a better technician than Zidane, it is arguable that, if you took everyone playing at the absolute peak of their game, Rivaldo was the best and most unstoppable footballer since Maradona.

    ==========================================
No one would forget Rivaldo's hat trick winner vs Valencia Barcelona 3-2 Valencia, La Liga, June 17 2001= won game on his own (talent_)

lato ,deyna and gadocha had the chance to do somthing in poland leaque and europeancup....seriously gerd müllers club and personal sucess in 1974 is completly ignored......what do you think if a person point out johann crujffs club sucess between 1971-73 is irrelevant and not much worth??

lato ,deyna and gadocha played in poland and in good clubs..this players didnt play for tennis borussia berlin in the bundesliga...however stal mielec was eliminated in the first round eurochampionscup with 2 defeats, and not good enough to be qualfiyd uefacup 1974/75..in fact lato has not played a single europeancup match 1974 for this reasons.....gerd müller has played his arse off in 8 europenchampioncup games, inclusive injured and out of positionin some games and still topscorer, inclusive 2 goals in final....without müller bayern doesent win the eurochampionscup 1974 and bayern 1975 is eliminated in the first round (magdeburg games)...
deyna and gadocha(legia warschau) in european cup ....first round eliminated in cup winners cup against nantes 1973/74 season, 1 defeat,1 draw and first round eliminated 1974/75 against saloniki with 1 defeat,1 draw in uefacup...

lato won nothing in clubfootball 1974, so did deyna and gadocha......no topscorer title and no championship and nothing in europeancup..........it looks like this failures are more worth than was gerd müller did...?? right??..

why thomas müller in balon dor wasnt ranked above messi and ronaldo 2010, using the criteria ??? müller was topscorer in worldcup and had the best assist stats in worldcup too....inclusive beating messis argentina 4:0, with 1 gamewinning goal and his worldclass second assist action same game for the 2:0...

the polnish players 1974 had much fresher legs playing the worldcup...the bayern players not only have played more games in competive games 1974, more games in friendly games too...and the unreal situation for bayern munich in bundesliga (the last game against gladbach, played 3 games in 4 days ) proof this too..gerd müller nearly did loose in this situation the bundesliga topscorer title against jupp heynckes..heynckes scored 2 goals in this 5:0 win......both 30 goals for the season....

do you think lato has played gerd against the wall in worldcup 1974??? who was worldchampion and who has scored the gamewinning goal in final...and who scored the 1:0 gamewinning goal against poland and lato???the trainer of poland is quoted in a kickerarticle......he has rated gerd müller above his offensive players for this game for the reason gerd müller scored the keygoal....lato had 1 goalchance against germany too but failed, you remember the action with beckenbauer??......

yes lato has outscored gerd müller 1974 with 7 goals and 2 assists....gerd müller had 4 goals and 2 assists and 1 created penalty..however lato has not faced a situation where him was recalled wrongfully a goal in a wc final....and gerd müller has not faced such a weak team like zaire padding his stats.....(remember where you pointed gerd müller has padded his stats eurochampionscup 1973 with his goals against nicosia),,butt lato get a freepass...
    poland-zaire 7:0

    lato 2 goals,1 assist
    gadocha 4 assists
    szarmach 3 goals,1 assist

lato had olso 2 goals,1 assist in a other first round match against argentina...argentina where in 6 games had only 1 win (against zaire)...

gerd müller wasnt used to shot the penalty, he has created against sweden, wasted in this moment the chance tieing just fontaines wc record of 13 goals..

lato has played a great worldcup..but there is a big line to draw....and balon dor rankings was more or lesser only performance in worldcup...

gerd müller 1974 in 15 international games , (eurochampionscup games and wc games combinated ) hit bar and post 4 times (post and bar in wc)and was recalled 2 good goals (europeanchampionscup first final 1974, and worldcup final 1974)....and people point out how unlucky messi 2010 in wc was....messi where had a assist in a moment tevez was 2 meters offside, played a freekick in the penaltybox where a opponent scored a unlucky owngoal and hit unlucky with a shot the bar in a other game, but had the luck a teamate scored the rebound sucessful...a example....what a crazy world...

    It was ignored in 1972.

Seriously, the World Cup was in 1974 the highest stage. Your comparison with Thomas Müller in 2010 is flawed. Lato was also second in the topscorer list in 73/74 in his own league, with 13 goals. Lato was topscorer in 72/73 and 74/75. In 73/74 he was second behind Kapka. Kapka was included in the 1974 squad but only played 15 minutes as substitute in the bronze medal match. So to suggest that Lato showed nothing in 73/74 at club level is not true. Lato also scored one goal when his club Stal Mielic was eliminated against Red Star Belgrade.

yeah .. Muller at WC10 was like a ONE SHOT wonder Schilacci of WC90 (with a "better" view)
Lato WC74 was like a Jairzinho WC70, Stoitchkov WC94, Renssembrink WC78 ... as real deal!

i did say he won nothing..i didnt say he did nothing at club level....or what did lato, deyna gadocha win 1974?? and what did gerd müller win 1974??...yes the worldcup was the highest stage..so was 2010....the thomas müller example was a bit sarkastic mentioned for the reason gerd müllers clubimpact 1974 was total ignored...but the uproar is funny...

no offensive player in europe ever won the worldccup, eurochampionscup, nationale championship and european supercup (not offiziel but technical yes)..and was topscorer in eurochampionscup, topscorer in nationale championship and scored nearly all important goals (from a technical standpoint) in a europeansupercup 2 leg series.... and scored goals in wc final, eurochampionscup finals and the 1:0 gamewinning goal where has sealed the german championship ..in a closefight against gladbach.....bayern was olso semifinalist in german cup 1974 loosing in the last minute of the game away against franfurt with a giftpenalty for frankfurt...in quarterfinal german cup 1974 ,he scored a hattrick, bayern winning 3:2...in worldcup final 1 wrongfully recalled goal away to be the runner up in the wc topscorer ranking 1974.. scoring the 1:0 gamewinning goal against the the topscorer of the wc tournament in the decisive match for the final..

1972....crujff was still 4th ranked only few points away from beckenbauer,müller and netzer....total difrent story for the reason it was a europeanchampionship year ..holland was eliminated pior in the qualification. and the german players shined in the european championship and won the european championship...gerd müller the topscorer with 4 goals in semifinal and final combinated inclusive gamewinning goals...the wembley game was important too ...no passengers....the bayern players won olso the nationale championship 1972, müller topscorer in bundesliga, europe and world....bayern olso reached the semifinal cup winners cup same year...müller 1972 11 goals, 3 assists in 8 european cup games....and in german cup eliminated under circumstances where happend not often., müller still scoring 3 goals in 2 games against cologne....

1972 ajax won the double, the eurochampioncup and the intercontinental cup......so seriously what has this to do with lato where won only the topscorer title worldcup 1974??you praise him in the olymp above müller for whatever reason 1974...??...

müller 1972 inclusive NT games has scored in 60 competive matches 85 goals and directly has contributed for 20 other goals and for about 20 goals assisters are unknown...so he directly contributed for 105 goals 1972 (januar-dezember) and this are his minimum numbers...netzer and beckenbauer are no strikers so feel free and point out why this players ranking was undeserved....i think you think crujff was the best 1972????
