It's crazy because he was known as a CM prospect when he emerged first at Sao Paulo. I remember reading about asking fee around 25 ME then. He had some issues there in following season and his value dropped. We got him on loan for Castilla with a cheap permenant option.

I remember being impressed by his defense splitting pass when Mou gave him senior start against Betis. Never thought he'd become a proper DM until he came on against Dortmund in 2013-14 and stopped their onslaught so easily. What a steal by the club management. Remember many Castilla followers didn't like this signing because of another prospect Jose Rodriguez who was followed by the likes of Arsenal then and they thought Case would hinder his development to greatness. He's in Segunda decision now.

Casemiro signing to Castilla didn't make much sense for most in the media then as he was seen as failed prospect who Sao Paulo got rid of.

Historically Perez us not very good with renewing DMs contract. I hope I'm wrong.

 

Casemiro is Zidane's man and is a fan favorite. Perez is not dumb.

 

In one of the CL winning videos, Perez said to Casemiro in the locker room: "You won the CL every single season you are here." I can't find the footage on youtube, but it was probably 2018. It actually did not say much about Perez's opinion on the importance of a DM, but it showed that Perez knew that Casemiro at least was his lucky star.

For your information, Casemiro was a part of the team in 2014 and went on loan in the 2014-2015 campaign. Then, he won three straights after his return.
