Why aren’t you currently serving in the U.S. military?

This question doesn’t apply to those brave men and women currently serving in the military (thank you, guys and gals), but for those of us who aren’t currently serving during the “War on Terrorism”, why not? I’m serious.

    1. I don't want to.
    2. I'm more useful as a civilian than as a soldier.
    3. I'm not a US citizen.

For one thing, I'm now too old (40) to enlist. I nearly went in after college, though. The Navy was going to send me to language school at Monterey, but I backed out at the last minute when someone told me that I'd end up at a listening post in Greenland.

I should also point out why I don't want to, I suppose. The same reason I don't take my vacations in Detroit or buy a weekend home in the South Bronx.

I might (?) be too old to enlist (30) but not too old to get drafted. Don't know. Never had a real inkling to join the military in any shape. If we had compulsory service I would serve with pride, but given the choice I'll remain a civilian and do my patriotic duty by raking in money via my employer and my taxes, which I never argue with or see as "too high".

If I were to serve, I'd be tempted to go Navy, as the sea intrigues me and I don't think I'd go stir crazy on a ship.

You are too old for the Navy, but not the Naval Reserve

You are too old for the Air Force , but not the Air Guard or AF Reserve

Just the right age for the Army ;) , tell them you want 11x with Airborne and Italy as your station of choice ;)

I really not that interested in learning the ways to kill people. I'm also not poor, from West Virginia, or rural Texas, so there's another disqualifier. Plus, I generally avoid FUBAR situations whenever I can do so.

    Oh so funny.........but yet not

    I've yet to kill someone

I grew up middle class in Boston

FUBAR is nothing, when it gets to TARFU, then you worry

There are times when I regret not serving when I was young. I'm technically still young enough, but my wife would hate me for shifting gears at this point, and I'm not so sure that it's what I would want to do now.

To those that chose "Dont agree with policy"

Is that the policy of the current administration ?

Or the policy to ever use force

Because I joined up during the Bubba administration

In general, I'd say its the policy to not ever use force. But that's an easy call for me - there's enough yahoos running around who are just chomping at the bit to go and off some foriegn bad guys. Well, there used to be.

Hey, did I mention, I'm also 43, with three kids?

Going to a Military Academy for High School killed any desire to join the military for me. I hated saluting a$$holes.

I don't agree with policy anyway...
But I think I contribute in other ways..I am a Red Cross volunteer (Disaster Action Team member) responding to local home disasters. I have not been trained to do the big stuff like respond to the big stuff like Post Hurricane recovery or overseas stuff...

Not much, but I guess it's something.

Why do you call them "yahoos" ?

Most of the folks I know in the combat arms MOS' are very level headed intelligent folks

I don't get the need to look down on them ? Is this revenge for being wedgied in high school ?

    Good for you

    Every bit of service helps

In fact for those that don't want to do military service, I highly recommend this program

Outside of bullying my wife, kids, and dog, I'm pretty much a coward. Also I was demeaned enough in high school sports as to have no inclination to shower with men again.

I can easily stand the relocation, the poverty, the seperation from family, the physical exertion and the loss of freedom and privacy. What I cannot possible stand is having to get up early in the morning.

    Where are the options for

    * Military haircut would ruin nightjob as guitarist in Poisen cover-band, and I don't want to ruin the economy

    * Only steers and queers come from my neighborhood, and I ain't got horns.

    * Previous conviction for dumping restaurant garbage

AF too. I was 4 years Active Navy and 2 years Army Reserve. I am only 34, looked into going back into the reserves, but I have too many dependants they said.

I say if you want to learn a tech trade, look seriously into the Navy and AF. You will learn what you need to know, get paid to learn it, and get OJT for it as well. Deployments for the Navy may include sea duty, then again if you are like me you may get stuck going nowhere. I got stationed at NAS GLenview, Il for 3 years, 56 miles from where I grew up. Spent Desert Shield and Desert Storm there.

I think alot of people shy away from the service because they can't handle having someone tell them what to do, the concept of chain of command is too hard for them. The Military is not for everyone.
