I’d assume SDSU stadium . Now 35,000 isn’t such a naughty number thanks to Nashville and some of the other very successful southeastern teams
As long as the gridiron lines won't show, SDSU stadium looks like it would be a great venue for soccer… This is what I read on wiki about Snapdragon Stadium....
Landon Donovan's San Diego Loyal will go to the MLS in 2024, coming from the USL. Been told MLS commissioner has approved it. It's time! ⌛️🇺🇸✅️ pic.twitter.com/hka29cMfsZ— Luca Bendoni (@LucaBendoni) December 23, 2022 Not sure the accuracy of this report from Italian journalist. Landon did recently move to the front office which would be in line. Snapdragon would be the venue. The Wave played there towards the end of last year and it worked great.
Isn’t that a financial handicap, not controlling the stadium? Naming rights, for one thing. Concession deals, all of it. Isn’t it harder to make money Using somebody else’s stadium?
They’ll work closely with San Diego State and add a canopy to improve the stadium. My understanding is that they’ll be ok on game day revenue because SDSU will incentivize the ownership group to get them where they need to be.
I guess the Aztecs have priority for home games over the Loyal? Will the Loyal have to find a secondary stadium for home games played during SD State home games? Gotta say, wish MLS would make the next group build a SSS. But if it works, it works.
I mean, it’s six Saturdays every Fall for Aztec football. Never any playoffs. Mountain West Championship game, I guess, if they host as top seed. NWSL already plays there. As a civic asset, the stadium needs tenants. Certainly a better situation for scheduling than Seattle, Charlotte, Atlanta, etc. Honestly, between the expansion fee and stadium costs, I don’t know how many investors are willing to put up $1B to start a franchise with no public assistance in any market. Stadium construction costs are what’s holding up Vegas.
Snapdragon will be in a very special class of stadium if MLS comes. (And I am talking about stadiums that don't involve NFL or MLB). They will have= MLS, NWSL, Major League Rugby and Aztec Football. 4 tenants! (plus maybe an occasional concert or whatever). Still can use the same Light Rail Train station as the prior stadium. All win, win. Not building a stadium holds the initial franchise costs down, the Loyal have a following, LD is well known, the stadium is a Nashville sized stadium and the field is grass--- better not be converted to plastic in "America's Finest City"= like LA, perfect weather 10 months a year. 2 rivals up the road in LA (probably automatic sell outs) and if you count SJ, could make for an expanded "Cali Classic" or something similar. They should play an annual home and away with the Zolo's of Tiajuana as well. Have to say whatever SDSU involvement in this project was, hope they are fair to all the tenants in terms of scheduling, rent , concessions, parking etc. Considering MLS will have a minimum of 17 home games, NWSL 11 games, those alone are way more that SDSU 5-7 home games. Will be interesting if all this plays out.
Why can't the team be called San Diego Sockers again? I'm sure whomever owns the name and logo will be happy to sell it for the right price.
Also liked the San Diego Nomads back in the day. Not sure MLS will let the Loyal just jump up with name and somewhat bland logo. I smell a rebrand of name and team if they make the jump. Jacksonville is the Armada Maybe San Diego can be the Admirals or something related to the large navy presence on town or something going back to the mission or founding of the city.
What were the names Garber wanted for Seattle's expansion team before fans wrote in Sounders? I can't remember that far back and can't anything online....
--------- Actually not bad, but maybe in reverse. AC San Diego - - San Diego AC - - Sporting San Diego
Another Sporting? So when Sporting KC plays Sporting SD they will win a Cup in a very Sporting manner? Maybe they could even play a series of exhibitions with Sporting Clube de Portugal?
In addition to having the option of submitting a write-in candidate for the team’s identity, supporters were given the following choices: Seattle Alliance Seattle FC Seattle Republic
So glad the fans wrote in Sounders! Also glad that the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps followed suit....
