At that point, the MLS season will definitely be expanded as well. I think well into most of December and starting in February.
I'm still trying to understand how everyone doesn't get that Leagues Cup isn't going away? There are now three tournaments in Mexico, U.S. & Canada being one. Caribbean as the second and Central America the third. All three tournament now have a way to qualify for CCL attached to them. Unless you're willing to give up three qualifying spots, it's happening in 2023. The CCL is expanding to 27 teams and i believe nine come from these tournaments.
The already have, you just missed it. What do you think all these mid-season games against Mexican teams are? More games to generate more revenue. They just are not MLS games. .
Another reason MLS won't increase to more than 34 games. I don't know how the draw will evolve but I expect there won't be much travel for MLS teams in the group stage.
It's a two-horse race between Las Vegas and Phoenix. There's been no news whatsoever on Eleven Park besides a brief mention on a talk show in Indianapolis back in May, and the radio silence has been driving me insane.
Phoenix is worrisome as far as attendance. Cardinals - 24th Diamondbacks - 24th Suns - 19th and the Coyotes are a total cluster at this point. Truth is people do not live in Phoenix to watch sports. Especially 2 hours in the summer.
With climate change and league growth, eventually MLS will have a summer league and a winter league, and they will play a few cross league matches during the shoulder seasons. Summer league: Montreal, New England, Toronto, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, NYCFC, NYRB, Columbus, Chicago, St. Louis, OKC, SportingKC, Minnesota, Detroit, Colorado, RSL, Cincinnati, Indianapolis Winter: Atlanta, DCU, Orlando, Miami, Charlotte, Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Las Vegas, San Diego, LAFC, LAG, San Jose, Vancouver, Portland, Seattle
Honestly, I don’t believe that’s a good metric. So long as the ownership group is good, any major market in the country can be successful. I remember when everyone was saying much the same about Atlanta... we don’t support the Thrashers. But give us an owner that cares and we have one of the best attended teams in the world.
https://www.reviewjournal.com/sport...-in-las-vegas-step-closer-to-reality-2516474/ Billionaires Wes Edens and Naseef Sawiris have entered into an exclusive negotiating agreement with Major League Soccer to move toward bringing an expansion team to Southern Nevada. https://t.co/x4ZkC8kamr #vegas #mls— Mick Akers (@mickakers) January 20, 2022
Could be a good rail trip for LA fans and vice versa. One of the owners also owns the company that is building the highspeed rail between LA and Vegas and, according to the article, one of the possible locations for the stadium is right next to the Vegas terminus. Google maps shows me this location is currently an massive empty field.
So, after Vegas gets in, how long will it take before Don Garble starts talking about #31 and #32? Will it be... A. Immediately B. Before Qatar C. After Qatar but before '23 MLS D. After St. Louis joins E. After Vegas joins F. Before WC 2026 G. After WC 2026 H. Never
Garber's talking about 4 divisions of 20 teams with promotion and relegation, the abolishment of expansion fees, and switching to an August to May season. That's if I heard him right. Maybe I'm drunk.
Where did you see that? I actually would favor all of that, but it require a break in January like some Central European leagues do, or scheduling to only play in the south in the coldest months.
Huh? Why do you think this? I could see some smaller leagues, especially in Britain and Scandinavia, making this move, but why would the bigger leagues and UEFA want to move?
Sorry that bit wasn't sarcasm. Arsene Wenger has been promoting a switch to summer. The Republic of Ireland has probably the most temperate summer season.
I thought the expanded Leagues Cup was, at least in part, designed for CONCACAF to showcase it's infrastructure/capabilities leading up to WC 2026. While I admit Leagues Cup will not be going away, I am not yet convinced we will always have a month long pause with all MLS/Liga MX teams playing.
No I think the Leagues Cup is a money grab and it's been expanded because the original format competed with the CCL.
