You won't believe this, but Tony Meola loves us.

Check this out, from Marc Connolly:

Questions for Kansas City goalkeeper Tony Meola

    Last great book you read:
    “Moby Dick” by Herman Melville.
Best soccer fans other than your own team’s fans: New England Revolution. They have supported that team from Day One, good or bad.
Best movie line to quote: “Don Corleone, I am honored and grateful that you have invited me to your daughter's wedding. On the day of your daughter's wedding. And I hope their first child will be a masculine child. I pledge my never-ending loyalty.” -- The Godfather
Which celebrity would you invite to a game, and why?: Robert De Niro. Because he’s a bad-ass.

    The whole column is here

Remember, folks, you can't spell "Meola" without " M-E-A-L

Tom let me get this spelling thing right...
    It's M-E-O-L-A As in:

"There was a farmer he had a cow
and Meola was his name Oh
    M-E-O-L-A
    M-E-O-L-A
    M-E-O-L-A
and Meola was his name Oh"

Thats what we're talking about right or is it more like?

"My Bologna has a first name it's
    T-O-N-&-Y
My Bologna has a second name it's
    M-E-O-L-A

We love to beat Tony everyday
and if you ask me why I'll say......
'cause Tony Meola has a way with
    B-O-L-O-G-N-A"

I saw the title of the thread, and was going to chime in with a Meola post. Lo and behold, it really does concern him...

I read his first response, that the last great book he read was "Moby Dick" and I immediately thought it was a spoof from a fanzine...then I realized it was legit and that made it all the more funny!!!

Perhaps he read it to pick up goalkeeping tips?

He might have thought Moby Dick was his biography.

Actually, he just mistakenly picked it up, thinking it was the unauthorized biography of a young bald techno-musician, as written by a young white rapper named after candy-coated chocolate.

    Melville v. Meola

All it means is that Tony hasn't read a book since high school.

Does anyone remember the song I wrote for the Riders in the inaugural year?

(to the tune of "A Bicycle Built for Two")

    To-ny, To-ny
What are you going to do ?
    Your acting's phony,
    Broadway's just not for you!
So pull on the cleats and gloves now--
    you'll pay the mortgage somehow--
    but you'll look sweet
    upon your seat
when (*) puts one by you!

    *add name of Revs player

You may recall at the time that Mr. Meola was considering a second career as a thespian.

Favorite Meola song (...to the tune of 'Jesus Christ Superstar'):

    Meeeeeola,
    MeeeetroStar,
...looks like a girl and he wears a bra!

I doubt that too. Melville never even read Moby Dick. It's gotta be the #1 book people lie about having read.

Now I don't feel so bad about never having picked up the book myself...

    Get in me belley...NOOOW!

Wasn't there a Woody Allen movie several years ago where the whole premise is that he underwent all kinds of metamorphesis only on the basis of not having/wanting to read Moby Dick?

And I'm surprised that The Fat Bastard (TM) didn't pick his former fans in New Jersey as his favorites. He's a local guy, and when he played for them they loved him. I haven't been paying attention to what the relationship is with the ESC/La Norte since he went off to The Land of Barbecued Ribs.

    :)

Yes, the film is "Zelig" and it's pretty humorous.
