    big up to Brooklyn
lets break down the good and bad points of each........

Petke's good quality(s)- solid defender, fan favorite, good tag team partner of Jolley, bicycle kicks, but the one he nailed would've won goal of the year except HE HIT THE CROSSBAR, hardly ever had injuries('til he plays the metros again, i'll bet he gets an injury before/while that game)

Petke's bad quality(s)- bad temper, not too popular in the locker-room, complains waaay too much to the refs.

Pope' good quality(s)- solid defender, never complains(i think he's a mute), doesnt get carded too often, veteran

    Pope's bad quality(s)- injury prone

add whatever you want to this list

Let's see, national team defender, World Cup vetran, prove stud whose humble and a proven leader along the backline versus a crybaby with a poor touch, slow speed and no sense of positionining and is arrogant and egotistical......

Might as well bring back Andy Williams while youre at it......

Petke being a fan favorite really doesn't matter and shouldn't be included. It's not like Pope is disliked by anyone. Is there a single fan out there who will not go to the games because Mike's gone and Eddie's here?

how many easy goals were scored on the metros last year...lots. most of the time it was Petke faked out of his shoes and out of position (on his a$$) . i'll put my money on Pope.

Could not agree with you more. Petke was a good servant of the team but he needed a change of scenery. I also understand that there were chemistry problems off the field.

Petke. Sure he had an off season last season, but one season doesn't erase two really good seasons. Both Petke and Jolley played below their standards, but you got to give them credit. A lot of the opponents goals were off breakaways because the midfield didn't do their job.

Let's hope that be can have Pope playing at least 15 to 20 games this season, because of injuries and National Team call-ups.

I'll take Eddie Pope any day. Petke has not played well since 2000. He had a bad season in 2001 and it just got worse last year. Maybe he can do better with a change, but if you ask me straight up then I have to take Pope with the heavier salary too.

The question really should be - who would you rather have, Petke at his salary or Pope at his salary? Pope scares me due to his injury potential. Who is going to back him up? Addo?

Having said that, I was not a big fan of Petke's play. The mistakes occurred too often. It wasn't as much of a problem when he played as a marking back - but he definitely cannot play as a central defender. What I did like was his intensity.

My vote has to go to Eddie Pope. All of the above posts describe him perfectly. He just quietly goes about his game - shutting down opposing attackers - and he does it well. Too many times last season Petke got caught out of position and could not recover in time to prevent a goal. There is only so much that Howard could do. The defenders and the keeper need to work together in the back and I think you will see a lot more of that with Pope.

    Mike Petke.

He is so much more marketable than Pope. He fills the stands with his adoring fans. Everyone wants to be like Mike.

I wish we could have kept Mike as a marking back while adding Pope in the center.

If wishes were fishes, we'd all cast nets in the sea.

Petke good qualities pretty good wing back. Petke bad quakities not a good center back. Good quality works cheaper then Pope.

Pope good quality good center back. Bad quality he costs way to freaking much money for a back.

So the question is: will Pope be our aching back?

Petke costs way too much and made a lot of mistakes. He has not played well since 2000. Why do people forget this? Pope is one of the best defenders in MLS, even for his salary. He may get injured, but a change of scenery may be what he needed. Another difference is that Pope is captain material and Petke is just a hot head.

After this season I think you guys will love Pope. Here's a few details left out of the original assessment.

Pope is faster, quicker, better change of direction, better foot skills, better marker, less cards, and yes, he's better in the air on both offense and defense.

The only drawbacks for Eddie are that he has a very high salary for a defender (but he can become a great target forward when you are behind), gets injured every year (major minus), misses games with Nat's commitments, and has trouble getting up for some of the smaller games. But when you're in the playoffs, he raises his play another notch.

As a DC United fan, I can say that to a man we are all very very disappointed to lose Pope. Bradley is too good of a coach to let you guys miss the playoffs, so I'm sure he'll cover for Pope's injuries and USMNT games just fine. Once in the playoffs, Pope is dominant.

An excellent post, required reading for anyone bashing the pickup of Pope. We're getting a class act and a guy who can turn a game towards our advantage. What a great deal for Metro, sure makes up for that Andy Williams blunder.......When Williams put his head down and dribbled into a mass of defenders, boy, were we a better a team......

    Brownswan.....ugggh.....save it for 101 :)

The last few postings have been brilliant.

Close this thread now, before the pro-Petke knuckleheads soil it.

Pope has a superior pedigree, and is a much better player. Only drawbacks are cost and that he breaks down often. I won't go into what makes him a better player as the previous posters have done that better than I could

Petke has all the tools to be an excellent central defender minus the speed, but he hasn't been able to get his game together after starting out with so much promise.

Let's review the wonder that is Mike Petke.....

Poor touch......Atrocious positioning......Reckless tackling......Over-confidence......Non-stop yapping and complaining.......Egotistical.......Slow.......Bad vision......No composure......Does little work off the ball........Yeah, Metro got the raw end of the deal on this one. I sure feel shafted for getting a guy who has played in two World Cups, could have signed with European power Feynoord, has great MLS experience, loves our coach, is a quiet leader, and presence on set pieces and is the consumate team player.......

Obviously Pope is the better player. There's not much arguement there. It's not a mistake that he suits up for the Nats whenever he's healthy....

HOWEVER, I disagree with you on most of your points regarding Petke as it pertained to my original post. When Petke came up, he showed a lot of promise. However, his development hit a brick wall and he hasn't progressed at all the last couple of season, and has likely digressed. A change of scenery is exactly what he needs. If he can change his attitude, maybe he has a chance to get back on track.

But let me be clear on my position, he's no Eddie Pope.
