I was so delighted to watch such an entertaining match today from England, though I don't like their counter-attack style. But they really worked very well being one down. I am really impressed by their style, and Ronney was just the brightest young star in this tourney. They played good football and was really entertaining to watch them play.

I also like Portugal too, but seems like they still struggled with one striker up front, though Deco and Ronaldo played really well. They played a more attacking football and dominanted the possession than England. I hope they will win against England. James was a nightmare for Liverpool, and he may do stupid things to give chances to Portugal.

I think this is going to be a good game, hopefully Portugal can win this one. I really want to see more of Ronaldo's magnificient skills, though I may miss Ronney quite much.

I take it you mean Rooney ? or is Ronney a nickname for Ronaldo?

This could possibly be a classic or one of the worst quarter finals ever. I see England winning 2-0 (Beckham, Rooney)

With the exception of the last few minutes against France, England has been playing some of the best overall football aside from the Czechs. Portugal has been a bit dicey. I expect a close match, but I think England will pull it out in the end.

England is the better side between the two and if things go right and they play like they did against Croatia they will move on for sure. They need to be a little more careful on set pieces, if they get that down I'm sure they can get through against Portugal who in my opinion have only been sub-par so far.

It is a complete toss up...the home side, against a team who gets support like they are the home side. I just have a good feeling about England though..they win, 2-1.

I think Portugal will continue to play better. I predict they will beat England 2-1 or perhaps 3-2. Portugal was favored by the oddsmakers ahead of England before the tournament. The talent levels between the two teams is similiar, England is more balanced while Portugal has a better attack. But the homefield advantage in these tourneys should not be taken lightly.

not sure what the ticket allocation will be for Thursday but I'll bet there'll be a full and noisy English section of the ground. the homefield advantage may not turn out to be much if things don't go PORs way. ENG to win handily.

It amazes me how optimistic English fans are. You should be more like Italian fans...expect the worst, and get the worst! Then complain. I can see England winning, but by a large margin? I doubt it.

But I think polls like this with England are pointless because there are going to more English speaking people and English supporters than any other team, regardless of what team has the most talent.

Also, the comfort level Portugal will feel is not limited to just how many of their fans there will be.

Portugal played well against Spain and I think that they are finally starting to play as a team.they still have a weak defence and I fear that rooney may take advantage of that... Pauleta has been a weak link, but now that he won't be playing against England I think the chances of scoring have improved. I think it'll be a tough match for both teams.. hopefully it'll be a good one.. :)

Damn, why is a spoiler like that allowed here?

By putting Portugal or England in the subject, you are telling the whole world that England finished 2nd, and France finished 1st. In other words, you are revealing the results of both games.

I come to BigSoccer not expecting to see spoilers, as I am about to watch both games simultaneously. Now you have all spoiled it...

Damn!!! Do we have straight rules of not IMPLYING the results on the subject line?

Good point. SHould be an [R].

Re: Who will you take? Portugal or England?

It can't be an [R]. Just by revealing a matchup of Portugal x England tells us all about the results of the matches:

    - Croatia didn't get the win they needed to qualify
    - Switzerland didn't get the win they needed to qualify

Whether it's England W/D or France W/D is irrelevant.

I think people should be prohibited from talking revealing QF matchups in the subject right after the group games.

Re: Who will you take? Portugal or England?

See, I am really pissed. Croatia just scored. There should be enough suspense if I don't know whether England would qualify. But the spoiler from this dope "bignose" totally revealed that Croatia's goal is all for naught.

That has nothing to do with skill or the perceived quality of a side. All this means is that more money was being wagered on Portugal than England. It a financial thing, not necessarily a football thing.

While your point is valid, if I had taped one (or two) games, I'd be nowhere near BigSoccer, or any other football board, until I'd watched the game(s). A caveat emptor of a type, no?

Re: Who will you take? Portugal or England?

I would not go anywhere in the Internet that has football coverage: BBC.com, soccernet.com, livescore.com, etc.

But Bigsoccer has advertised as a site that ****STRICTLY PROHIBITS SPOILER***. If I come to Bigsoccer.com, I expect not to see any spoilers, which is the sort of guarantees that I don't get anywhere else, like the newsgroup rec.sport.soccer.

Back in 2002, I sort of remember the spoiler policy also covers discussing matchups of the next round, like

"who would win the final, Brazil or Germany?"

right after the semi-finals, because that would simply reveal the semi-final scores...

Sorry, folks, I really don't mean to spoil you guys. I just forget the fact that some people tape the matches. I just want to apologize if I ruin your day.

Anyway, I promise I would not promise any new threat regarding this. Even I would, I will use another name. I just feel someone maybe interested to talk about.

And sorry to the admin too. I just want to share some comment with folks who've seen the matches. Once again, hope you guys can accept my apology.

Personally think its your own fault. Sure the guy who made the thread can be blamed, but these sorts of things are bound to happen. You do not have to come to bigsoccer, it can only be a matter of hours between the game and when you watch the reply, im sure you can survive without comming here

I think the game has the potential to be a classic. Portugal is the team of pretty passing and ball posession, but without scorers. England has good defenders but always seems to refuse to give away ball posession and always tries to challenge. This leads to more open spaces for a technically skilled team like Portugal. The English are more effective, having scored today 4 times in 19 shots. Portugal scored once in 16 shots against Spain. england plays and open game and that is why I fancy the chances of Portugal who struggles against teams playing behind the ball and kind of like admitting they won't try to win the battle for more ball posession. We all still remmber the great game of these two teams in another Euro, when England lost 3-2 after being up by two goals. My prediction, Portugal wins 2-1.

Ahh yesss!! The perfect world scenario. I repeat my original contention:

Portugal's got nothing, England are a far better team and as long as we don't play one of our egg laying games (see France) expect a Czech-England final.
