After reports that Ronaldo will be going to the Olympics and now Solskjaer needing surgery on his knee who will play right wing for the first 3 months of the season.

I heard that SAF will give Ronaldo a 2 months break after the Olympics because he has not rested after playing almost every game at the end of last season, then Euro and now Olympics. OGS will need surgery and will be sidelined for 3 months. SAF sees Smith as a striker and not a right sided midfielder.

So who will play in the right side of midfield? Fletcher is an option but his displays there isn't awesome. Will Eagles get the opportunity or should we sign someone. Oh and does Chadwick or Djordjic play RM?

    Giggs.

But seriously, I wonder if Richardson can do the job or not....

I would guess Fletcher will probably be forced to play there until Ronaldo is back. That really upsets me as he'll probably be useless out there and I'll have to defend him for 3 more months.

Yeah but did he say that before or after Ole's injury recurrence? Might have to change his tune now that we don't have anyone else who can do better over there, at least for now. Beyond that the only player I can think of would be Bellion.

The reality is that Fletcher is going to be put back on the flanks. No one here is excited about that. I think it would be beneficial to see Bellion tried there (good suggestion Achtung). I also think that Smith might have to play there if there is no one else. It might actually be better for him as he will be able to get into more games earlier on. Seems to me he has the most to prove and if he is anly being used as a back up striker he won't get as many oportunities to show us what he's got. Plus early in the year is a better time to be screwing around with line ups as opposed to the end of the year.

I agree with the proposal of Smith and Bellion... in that order hopefully... I still would like to see Bellion get a decent amount of games... he is soooooo fast... his pace might stretch the defence so that Gary can make some crosses... Gary is now the best source for crosses on the team I would think, him and Giggs anyway...

I agree with the idea of using Bellion or Smith, but the problem is that if we put Smith there, then who will cover the strikers. Bellion is less experienced, but faster than Smith so Bellion might not be the best option. In the case Smith is played there then we should play 4-5-1 so that Saha back-up Ruud.

Given his background, Smith will need a run in the team to get the fans on his side and to settle, plus he brings a bit of tackling bite to our midfield too and will take some of the pressure off in terms of when he scores his first goal. I think the Ronaldo absence gives the ideal opportunity.

    I also think we should play Ruud and Saha for as long as poss so they can gel as a pairing. My starting eleven for the first few games of the season would be;

    Ruud & Saha
    Giggs Keane Scholes Smith
    O'Shea Silvestre Brown Gaz
    Howard

Fletcher & Miller to be given some playing time off the bench and Ronaldo / Heinze / Rio to return later.

Ah, the fact that we lack a single, true back-up winger hurts us for the first game of the season. What a shock...

On the other hand, what better time to see if one of the kids can step it up other than in the pre-season?

OK, I may have been a tad cavalier in my attitude regarding this situation, but I think I've finally figured out the solution to our problem here. I'm thinking of a player who is technically a striker, but has been utilized in the attacking mid and right wing role for his country. This player has a huge upside and I think he would be perfect for Manchster United....

See this is why i was hoping Man U would have gotten another offense midfielder. Fletcher is better in the middle, Bellion has speed but theres doubts to his passing, Chadwick seems to have had a hard enough time breaking into the first team already....Basically this points to a general lack of depth on the right side that began after Beckham left. Ronaldo is a great, but even if he would be playing it would be awesome to have a quality backup.

I agree though with an earlier poster who said this is Smiths chance. He is going to have to play a tricky role, but good perfomences could earn him the respect of the OT fans, SAF, and Team England. He's the best we have now.

Smith is clearly going to get the opportunity to show what he can do out right. But that means Alex's idea that he can play two strikers from four has become 2/1 from 2 in just a few days. I'm hoping that this loosens up the tight wads on the board and brings in another winger or striker.

It will be Liam Miller, provided he is back from injury before the season starts.

Miller is capable of playing on the wing? From what i had heard of him, he was more of a central/holding midfielder kind of guy. I will look forward to seeing him and getting more info on him though.
