    Serie A
    Premier League
    La Liga

I know 2 can theoretically, but choose who you think will get 3 teams into the 1/4 finals. And no, NOBODY will get 4. :D

You need to add another option -- none of the above.

Barca & Inter out of group A.

Arse & Ajax out of group B.

Milan & Madrid out of group C.

ManU & Basel out of group D.

    Nobody has more than 2.

Alternatively, Dortmund could eak out Madrid and Deportivo prevails over Juve & Basel -- still nobody has more than 2.

Yeh I thought that, but it seemed a bit too unlikely. :D

    Well, to revive this thread...

    Group A
    Barcelona 13 -- guarantee 1st
    Inter 8
    Newcastle 7
    Leverkusen 0 -- out

    Inter plays at Leverkusen
    Newcastle hosts Barcelona

If Inter equals the result of Newcastle, Inter advances.
Also, if Inter loses and Newcastle draws, Inter advances.
Newcastle must win and hope Inter lose or draw for them to advance.

    Group B
    Ajax 7
    Arsenal 7
    Valencia 6
    Roma 4

Ajax plays at Roma and Arsenal plays at Valencia.

Still anyone's group. Ajax and Arsenal hold the upper hand and one of them is guaranteed to advance. Ajax, Arsenal and Valencia are all in control of their own fate -- win and they advance. Roma can only advance with a win combined with a loss or draw by Valencia.

    Group C
    Milan 12 -- guaranteed 1st
    Madrid 8
    Dortmund 7
    Lok Moscow 1 -- out

Madrid play at Moscow and Dortmund play at Milan.

Madrid advances with the same result as Dortmund. Dortmund must have a win and a draw or loss by Madrid in order for Dortmund to advance. A draw by Dortmund and a loss by Madrid sees Madrid advancing.

    Group D
    Man United 13 -- guaranteed 1st
    Juventus 7
    Basel 4
    Deportivo 4 -- out

Juve play at Basel and ManU play at Deportivo.

Basel's only prayer is to beat Juvenus by 5 goals.

Now to get back to the topic of this thread -- it looks to me like EITHER Italy or England are going to have 3 teams advance.

We know Barca, Milan and ManU are advancing. It is very likely Madrid are as well. In Group B, I'll pick Ajax and Arsenal. That's 2 each for Spain, Italy and England plus Ajax. So whichever one of Inter or Newcastle advances out of group A make it a trio for that country.

Here are my predictions for the quarterfinalist teams:
    Inter
    Barcelona
    AC Milan
    Real Madrid
    Ajax
    Arsenal/Valencia
    Manchester United
    Juventus

What a group of quarterfinalists! Who does everyone fancy winning it? i'm going with Inter against Real in the final Inter taking it as Ronaldo cries at the end!!!!!!! What a finale that would be!

Inter are awful right now. Newcastle should have beaten them. They haven't got a chance of winning the CL in my book.

I wouldn't be suprised if Bayer beat them or at least draw. They were quite unlucky against Barcelona the other day and played well.

There's still a chance Italy can get 4, leaving Spain 2 and England 1!

Inter have been horrible of late because they haven't had Emre, Crespo, Adani, Materazzi, C. Zanetti, Almeda, Beati, Coco, Pasquale, Recoba, Cannavaro, Ventola, Batistuta, Kallon, Okan, etc. That can kind of hurt a team if you know what I mean. They have been without about half of their team the last three matchdays. Before that they were coasting.

Not totally correct. a 3-2 or a 2-1 win wouldnt get it done. there only hope is a 1-0, 2-0 etc win plus a very large victory by Arsenal

If Ajax play focussed it shouldn't get to that.

Still... despite being proud of what they've done so far...... if we had a decent scoring striker we would have been in the quarter finals by now. So many chances, so few goals.

You're not correct tree. A 2-1 win would get it done with any Arsenal win. Also, the margin of victory / loss in the Arsenal game has no bearing on whether Roma advances.

There are 3 possible outcomes with a Roma win. The margin of victory in the Ajax Roma game only matters in case 3.

    1) Roma and Valencia both win -- Roma does not advance. Valencia finishes with 9 points and wins the group. Roma, Ajax and Arsenal all finish on 7 points. The first tie breaker is points earned among the tied teams. Among these 3 teams, Arsenal has 6, Ajax 5 and Roma 4. Arsenal advances in second place.

    2) Roma win and Valencia draw -- Roma advances. Arsenal has 8 points and advances as group winner. Roma, Valencia and Ajax all finish on 7 points. However, within those 3 teams, Roma would have 6 points, Ajax and Valencia 5, each. Roma advances in 2nd.

    3) Roma win and Valencia lose -- depends upon score of Roma game. Arsenal has 10 and advances as group winner. Roma and Ajax both finish on 7 points. Roma would advance with 1-0 or 2-1 or 2+ goal win.

For the tiebreaker between Ajax and Roma, first is head to head points and each would have 3 points. Next tie breaker is goal difference between just them. A 2+ goal win means Roma advances. In a 1 goal win, the next tie breaker is goals scored away from home, so a 1-0 win means Roma advances because of the goal scored at Ajax in the 2-1 loss. A 3-2 or 4-3 win means Ajax advances. In a 2-1 win, the next tie breaker is superior goal difference in all group matches. In the case of a 2-1 Roma win, the GD for both teams would be zero. The next tie breaker is the higher number of goals scored. Ajax would have 6 and Roma would have 7, so Roma would advance.

No, because they only way Italy can get 4 is to have Roma advance. The only way Roma can advance is to have Arsenal win or draw -- in either case, Arsenal advances too.

So you'd have (winners listed first).

Barca & Inter out of A.
Arsenal & Roma out of B.
Milan & Madrid or Dortmund out of C.
ManU & Juve out of D.

    Italy 4, England 2, Spain 2 or 1, Germany 0 or 1.

If Italy advances 4, then you're guaranteed having Milan play one of the other Italian teams in the quarterfinals.

It's interesting that when I revived this thread yesterday, the standings for the voting was...
    La Liga 6 votes
    Premiership 6 votes
    Serie A 2 votes.

    Now it's...
    Serie A 12 votes
    La Liga 9 votes
    Premiership 6 votes

I think the premiership on paper is probably the most unlikely because Inter only have to beat Bayer.

However, I wouldn't rule out Bayer getting a draw in Germany at all.

Can Roma only Advance if Arsenal do? I know Roma can never finish above Arsenal.

Can Roma only Advance if Arsenal do? I know Roma can never finish above Arsenal. I forgot about that so obviously if Italy get 4 England must get 2.

I can see Spain getting 2.

Yes, Roma can only advance if Valencia loses or ties (which means Arsenal advances). If Valencia and Roma both win, then Valencia and Arsenal advance.

Well, the results are in and...........both Italy and Spain have 3 qualifiers for the quarter finals.

    Seed 1 teams

    Man U
    Milan
    Valencia
    Barca

    Seed 2 Teams

    Inter
    Ajax
    Juve
    Real

Now as I remember teams in the 1/4's can't play a team they have played in Group 2 or from their own country (I think, not sure about that).

In which case the draw will be:

    Valencia v Inter
    Milan v Ajax
    Barca v Juve
    Man U v Real

There are always upsets but I'm guessing it will be the 3 Spanish teams plus Milan in the semis.

    This part is correct...
    ...this part is not.

We could see Milan vs. Inter or Juve and we could see Valencia or Barca vs. Madrid.
