When Hermosillo left to go to MLS, I was upset. I thought he had a legitimate shot to go after Cabinho's record of Cabinho 312 Hermosillo 294 Cardozo 249 Borgetti 226 It looks like Cardozo and Borgetti will not get chance to break Cabinho's record. I always thought Borgetti had a better shot because he wasnt as injury prone as Cardozo. I always found that out to be odd considering Borgetti always played more physical considering he always had to fight for center crosses. I really cant be MAD at Borgetti because he is going to a GREAT league
It's going to be a hell of a long time before anybody breaks Cabinho's record ... (from one of your earlier threads) https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=162354&highlight=scorers I don't see it happening for 15 years at least ... I think for the most part, the number of goals that the leading goal scorers in any league have scored has gone down. A guy would have to average at least 30 goals a year for 10 years. That's a pretty impressive feat. Injury or national team call ups and you would have to make it up.
WELL... this is something that you may find odd, but it is true..... but the season after the short season was implemented, the numbr of PKs and Autogols were almost identical as to that of the long season. It has then surpassed it and is more than double per season. That isback then we played 34-38 weeks and now we play 17-19 weeks... we score alomst the same amount of goals in 17-19 weeks than we did in 34-38 weeks. AND if you were to compile an apertura and a clausura tournament.... the amount of goals, PKs, and autogoals have surpassed by a lot the amount that was scored in a traditional format... it is that reason and that reason alone why I think it would be more easier NOW, than ever to break his record. Not so much on talent, but the way the system is set up. THe system is set up where teams dont have time to form, and defensive errors occur at a faster rate...allowing for more goals
If we're talking about young players, the ones that come to mind are Sebastian Gonzalez 26y, 65 goals Chelito Delgado 24y, 32 goals Omar Bravo, 25y, 53 goals Rafael Marquez, 23y, 36 goals That's still alot of goals they have to make up ...
Hermosillo had the best chance. if he would not have gone to MLS or would of at least played another 3 seasons, he would have broken that record for sure.
I don't know if you could say for sure. Hermosillo played in 1998 and 1999 for the Galaxy but he still had some productive seasons after leaving MLS in Mexico with America. Playing in MLS did not affect his Verano seasons, but only the Invierno ones because both years he finished his Verano season with Cruz Azul or Necaxa or whoever he played with at the time before joining the Galaxy in May or June. As far as the games he missed in the winter, check out the stats: Invierno 1998: 11 games played, 4 goals Invierno 1999: 2 games played, 0 goals http://mediotiempo.com/pi/jugador.php?id_jugador=83 In 2000 and 2001 Invierno seasons, he played 16 games and 19 games. So he only missed like 20 games because of MLS. At his scoring pace over his last four seasons (all of 2000 and 2001) he would not have made up the difference in goals. He would have had to have scored 19 goals in those games to have broken the record and he was not averaging one goal a game. 19 goals in 20 games? I wouldn't call that "for sure."
Chelito won't do it. I'm surprised that he's even still at Cruz Azul, pretty soon he's gone to Europe. Hopefully the same goes for Bravo. Another good year or two and he could go over. Chamagol is one of those guys that if he had some better help then maybe he could ascend into the high 100s or even 200 level. I can see him staying in Mexico for quite a while.
you are not taking into account liguillas... i personally dont think liguilla goals should count since players before 1970 didn play them... BUT... the Cabinhos and them did.... I think 25-30 games to score 19 goals is not out of the question considering he would also have been elected to kick PKs.
I think chamagol and delgado wont last much longer in Mexico. Bravo has a chance, but only cause I dont think he will ever leave chivas. I'm not sure why, but he doesnt seem like the kind of guy who would want to leave or who would even play well elsewhere.
But he wasn't scoring at that pace. The first two seasons right after he left Galaxy he scored 15 goals in 32 games. That's four fewer goals in 2-7 more games than you allotted for. I think what hurt him wasn't the switch to MLS, it was constantly moving around from team to team. Cruz Azul, Necaxa, Galaxy, America, Atlante, Chivas... that's a lot of teams there in like five years. Also, when Manolo took over at Atlante and he bailed because they did not get along, that also hurt him. He went to Chivas which was not as attacking as Atlante and scored three less goals in two more games (5 in 17 with ATL, 2 in 19 with CHV).
but you have to take into account the change of adapting into a different league. Hermosillo, like it or not, wasted his time and effort in the MLS. HE wasnt the scoring machine he once was, BUT, his level of play dropped significantly after coming back. Same thing happened to Matador. The only one that was able to get back to some form was Brody
I liked Hermosillo after he joined Galaxy. I did'nt care much for him before but I got to like him when he played here. The only thing I won't ever forgive him for was when he missed a PK in a PK shootout against Necaxa in the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarters I think it was the quarters. It was the runup to the touranment that Necaxa made and tied ManU and beat Real Madrid and finsihed third. Hermosillo missed it badly. I think it went over the crossbar. I was mad. I think the fact that him and Matador went back to mexico in worse shape than when they left had to do more with age than with anything else.
Incidentally, is Cabinho a foreigner? I'm assuming he is. Is it important to you that a Mexican holds the goals scored record? Just wondering...
It is important to me for a Mexican to hold that record.... just like it is also important for me for clubs to nominate Mexican players to take penalty kicks for 2 reason...... 1. there is extreme amount of pressure to win in the Mexican league and the more times the mexican player is exposed to that pressure, the better for the club and th better for the national team. 2. most PKs are shot by foreigners which offset the tables
Well the way things are going these days only foreigners will have a chance at getting near Cabinho's record. I think something like two of the top 10 scorers last season were Mexican, the rest foreigners. Now with Borgetti gone the league is losing a top Mexican scorer. Cardozo's out too but Borgetti's better than him right now. I know it's easier to sign some scorer from South America but it seems like nobody develops mexican strikers anymore. Look at Dorados. Why'd they have to bring back Abreu? All he's doing is taking the spot of some young Mexican who won't get a shot anymore. the only Mexican i see with any chance of nearing 300 goals is Omar Bravo. I know he doesn't have a ton of goals and he's not young but who else is there? Marquez Lugo? Kikin?
That's true and it's the main reason the NT doesn't have many young strikers. It really sucks seeing that some of our younger players are in their mid 20's when NTs like Spain and England have young talented guys in their early 20's and even in their teens. Proof of Mexico's failure of devolping young talent was the fact that we didn't make it to the World Youth Championship and were eliminated by some Central American country. What Bullsh1t, something should be done.
It will be soooo long before it's broken. The only guy I see breaking it right now is if Chelito stays around, but he won't.
