There are a lot of fabulous Christmas markets in Europe, if one country is expensive, check others. Austria and Scandinavia have fabulous ones too.

 

I'd never been to Germany in the fall, but we went last year in late October. It was really, really nice. We were in the south and saw some pretty fall colors, and the weather was fine. The only downer was that the schedule did not allow for attending a game, at any level down to the 4th division, as we tended to be in the wrong city on the wrong weekend.
