Sometimes after a long series of pissing and moaning by my kids, we just give in and let them have what they want. Anyway, congrats Celtic. I’m sure the 700th one is the best one yet
Small point, my parents have done the alumni cruises a couple times. They were informed that OSU is literally the only organization that completely sells out the boats.
Okay. So? One obvious thing that seems to be missed when engaging in pissing matches over who has the most committed and vocal alumni base is Columbus. I mean, it's not relevant in every case, certainly, but think about it. Many universities with huge alumni bases are in smaller college towns. Penn State, which has an alumni base larger than Ohio State's, is in piddly State College, PA with it's year-round population of 40,000. Indiana has the largest living alumni base. But Bloomington's population is under 90,000. There's Purdue and West Lafayette, IN. Michigan State and Lansing, MI. Texas A&M and College Station, TX. You also have UCLA and UC Berkeley which are in metro areas much, much larger than Columbus will ever be. 30-35% of OSU alumni live in Central Ohio. That's about 200,000 people. By the way, about 60% still live in Ohio. So that's starting to push 400,000. That's a shit ton of Ohio State alumni still either living where they went to college or within a 2-3 hour drive of campus. And that simply isn't the norm among other schools.
not even sure why or what we're arguing about here... except i guess my use of "small point" in response to you using prior does seem antagonistic in retrospect. My bad
It's not you. I was lazy in making my point, such as it was. Which was really related to something someone else said earlier in the thread. Laziness is my superpower, so to speak.
I never would have guessed based on the following: OSU slipped to #3 in terms of campus enrollment. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_public_university_campuses_by_enrollment I was looking to verify the above and came across this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...tates_colleges_and_universities_by_enrollment The obvious guess is that a large number attend because it's some combination of in-state, where their parents went, where their friends go and a good football team.
They’ll only have that option if their high school grades are good enough. Getting into Ohio Stare today bears no resemblance to what was the case when their parents went there. In any event, I’m less interested in why people attend Ohio Stare than I am with what they do after graduation. So many of them stay, in part, because Columbus is a big, rapidly growing city with lots of jobs. I’ve lived in a few college towns - Chapel Hill, Bloomington, Madison - and job markets there (especially Bloomington) are extremely limited compared to Columbus. Speaking of jobs, my daughter got one yesterday in the oncology department at the James! Three days after her Denison graduation. Very much an entry level clinical research gig, but ideal as she figures out what to do regarding grad school.
Bingo--in my day (late 70s) if you had a pulse you got in. Some of the students I had (I was a chemistry teaching asst) proved that. Grad school was a different story, tho. Much tougher.
Congrats! No matter the role ... working at The James carries on a resume. Well beyond Columbus. Cancer treatment is one of the few large and steady profitable areas for providers in healthcare (sadly) ... that Amazon or Mark Cuban or whoever cannot disrupt easily. OhioHealth is building a new cancer center across the street from Riverside Hospital, to try and get some of the market share The James has.
Good on your daughter, but if I might be allowed, isnt The James just one big oncology dept? I mean, they dont do a lot of podiatry.
True. She'll be in the gynecological oncology unit, which has 400 people alone. Until yesterday I (thankfully) was most familiar with it by its many commercials.
Steal my career why don’t ya - except I didn’t get hired until October post grad! Spoiler alert, there was never any grad school for me. Congrats to her.
My wife spends a lot of time as a float nurse at the Mill Run Gyn/Onc infusion clinic. I'm sure they will be crossing paths!
Strongly disagree with your alternative facts , as a diehard Buckeye since 1978. It’s always Been Ohio St & Michigan in the Big Ten as consistently dominant. A few others have had a coach that kept them Relevant for 1-2 time periods. Now the Big Ten has added a lot of teams with a rich history winning so that could change with a new era & NIL. Also it’s a good chance they will add ACC teams like Florida St etc … I don’t think we are a big Fish in a small pond at all. We are a Killer whale. That said we have a losing record VRS a few teams that we haven’t played much. We have a losing record VRS Meatchicken before we joined the Western Conference (now called the Big ten) but in Conference play we actually have a winning record VRs the Walmart Wolverines. You see prior to 1906 there was no forward pass and in 1912 all modern rules were put in place. 3 downs , forward motion like CFL (banned due to high death counts) & field goals were worth more than touchdowns in those days. Also Michigan was cheating even back then and kicked out of the conference for refusal to follow rules. Rules they were breaking was get ringers to play who were either not students or literally stole them from other schools. I’m a CFBologist and research yourself I’m spitting straight facts ! now the teams we have losing records against: Clemson 1-4 FSU 0-3 Miami 2-3 Stanford 2-3 USC 10-13-1 Air Force 0-1 a few FCS teams not worth talking about from the old days. Now let’s focus on SEC teams which like many of the teams i listed above won a lot of those games in bowl games in their own backyard or like the Liberty bowl VRs AF it’s kinda a meaningless game and we played poorly. SEC: Alabama 1-4 never played in Columbus Auburn 0-1-1 never played in Columbus Florida 0-2 never played in Columbus Uga 0-2 never played in Columbus but overall we absolutely have a wining record VRS SEC teams and every other conference for that matter. Even if you take out the SEC teams from the B12 that boosted our record up Then it’s 9-11-2 but most of the losses once again are bowl games on SEC soil. Missouri was not Sec when they won in Columbus in 1976 nor was Texas in SEC when they won in 2005. Not even Vanderbilt’s 1931 win in Columbus came while in the SEC because NO SEC team has came to Columbus , Ohio and walked out victorious. If any team plays us several times we will undoubtedly come away with more wins. Ohio St is a juggernaut put some respect on the Buckeyes name. You are not just wrong your Dead Wrong like the Notorious B.I.G. Song
I looked it up. TTUN (and I'm sure everyone else) would teach the game to other schools in the AM and play a game against them in the PM. They're actually 1-0 against Ann Arbor HS. Yet, all they have to claim against Ohio State is a bunch of wins from 19dickety2 from when the rules were different.
When I say they beat up the sisters of the poor … They literally beat up Dentist schools , YMCA teams and high school teams. The all time wins they brag about is an absolute joke! They count back to 1800s and before people even called it football (literally ) even some years they had no coach because the sport was still trying to separate from Rugby & Canadian Football. Nobody should count wins from 1800-1911 but even we do and it’s dumb. 1912 is the first year of actual football with 4 downs ,forward pass (1906 but you had to be 5 yards behind LOS until 1912) modern point system etc …
May I mention that there's another Big 10 team that beat tOSU in 1912 (if you are going to use 1912 as a marker) by 37-0 (or 1-0, depending on how you count tOSU walking off).
I'll just cut right to the chase ala Groundskeeper Willie. Buckeye fans are natural enemies of other Buckeye fans. Damn Buckeye fans, they ruined Ohio State!
