Re: Who will NBC choose as it's announcers?

    Ever heard Grant speak?

He really, really doesn't have a suitable voice for pbp or color commentating. Knowledgeable guy for sure, but people would get fed up with his nasally high pitch voice reallllllll quick.

Hudson and his partner have my vote. Hudson is knowledgeable, funny and engaging. If he is not interested, at the very least MLS should give him a consultant job to make up nicknames for players and catch phrases for exciting moments.

Looks like Jimmy Conrad will try out a studio gig at Fox Soccer on September 5th during the LAG vs SKC game:

My money's on Alro White. That's not a preference, it's a prediction (though I have no problem with him).

NBC should definately go after Shoen and Hudson, and i hope its a more american cultured Broadcast, no nil, pitch, this and that. plus no end score saying the loser team first and winning team last like them british do. American Soccer needs American Broadcast for to be a better success with American viewers.

If NBC was smart they will go with Arlo White or Glen Davis I have hard Arlo White do some games and he is good I have also hard him on WFD as a gust and I love to hear what he has to say. Glen Davis is one more he has good. But if you ask me my money is on JP going to NBC after Fox lose the MLS they will have no need for him. So for PBP I can see JP next to him I would love to hear Taylor Twellman. As for the guys who I would love to see do Studio work Alexi Lalas Jimmy Conrad and as host Eric Wynalda. Just 2 names I don’t want to hear is John Harks and Kyle Martino they are bad.

Considering John Harkes works for ESPN, who will still have MLS and national team games next year, I imagine he'll stay there if ESPN wants to keep him.

I follow Harrisburg in the USL. During our semi-final game I watched the City Islanders play the Rhinos (Rochester) on usllive.com. They (rhinos) have a pxp guy (Joe Giuliano) who was excellent. Apparently, he has called several games on FSC. Very good tempo, good knowledge of teams and players and NO english accent. He was just as good as any of the current MLS guys. I can't see Sullivan or Wynalda getting another chance. They did a boring job on FSC.

    Doubtful.

NBC is likely not going to want to top what he's already getting paid by the Sounders. Which is a nice big chunk of change. He is the most highly paid local/regional play by play guy in the biz and makes more than either of the two guys on ESPN.

Beyond that is the family factor. He just moved his daughters and wife here. I doubt he would want to up root them for where? LA? NY?

    Got a source for that?

I completely believe that he's the highest paid local pbp guy - net money is saved by having him do both TV and radio simulcast and without a color commentator. I just hadn't heard or read anything definitive about what he's making, what anyone at ESPN was making, or how the two compared.

While I would love for national broadcast commentary to not FSuCk, I would hate to lose Arlo. I'm used to listening to his radio call on while watching the Sounders on FSC or ESPN already.

Alro White.....nah.......Just another english voice that will have AMERICAN fans scurrying away from this "foreign" game. That's following ESPN's bland approach of the english accent. But, maybe Ray Hudson as color. He seems to blend great knowledge and enthusiasm. Then it won't be that bore of english talk for the majority of the game.

As evidenced by the ratings flop that was the 2010 World Cup and the critically acclaimed presentation of the 2002 and 2006 World Cups by ESPN.

When are the "Americanize it!" crowd going to realize that the foreign origin of the game is a marketing advantage the other major sports can't tap into?

Because the argument is that by not making it OUR game we give many Americans an easy out to say that it is only THEIR game and choose to keep soccer at arm's length.

    "Their" is intentionally ambiguous.

    In The Beginning,

God created the heaven and the Earth,

    then,

he went on to create The Beautiful Game (and Living Theatre) of Football

    and then,

he created Arlo White (currently PBP with the Sounders FC) and Martin Tyler (PBP of Sky Sports UK) to be the two best commentators on each side of the Atlantic,

    and then.....

God sent the Football Gods from the Heavens to pull off the biggest deal in U.S. Football history, and lure none other than Andy Gray, who was given the proverbial "straight red card" by Sky, to leave his job with Betfair.com (a popular UK betting site) and come to America to join Arlo White on NBC as pundit and color (...and boy do I mean color!!! :) ) analyst to make the greatest UK-based duo The Beautiful Game could ever give this country since the the late great George Best (of the NASL L.A. Aztecs) and David Beckham (currently in his last of his 5-year deal with the L.A. Galaxy) back in the days, and create the MLS broadcast duo in the business!!! Combine that with Bob Costas and Richard Keys (another Sky castaway) and you'll have an awesome combination that MLS supporters will love hearing, for a full 90 and pre-match, half-time, and full-time shows.

Right now, to quote Richard Keys, "I'm about to go potty" over this idea, I think it would be great to have White, Gray, Keys and Costas do MLS matches, hey anybody but Joe Buck!!!

somebody is wet dreamin, ... its MLS, if NBC is smart they go after American/ canadian announcers. Its a North American league anyway, makes no sense to have abritish voice.. Ray Hudson is the exception.

Why do so many people get riled up about accents without giving the slightest bit of thought to what the commentator is actually capable of as far as analysis and insight?

Vin Scully. If the world were to end like in the movie "2012", I'd want Vin Scully giving the play-by-play of the death and destruction around me.

In all seriousness, JP is just fine by me. I like him.
