Who was the leading scorer in 1998 for the USMNT?

  1. My friend and I were arguing about this, and the answer is interesting. Neither of us had it right. Do YOU know? (without cheating of course)

  5. Actually Wegerle scored twice, tying him for first in terms of goal scorers... so actually that is right strictly per my question. But there was another guy who scored twice that also had two assists, while Wegerle had none. He was the points leader, if you count assists as we do here in America. And his name was...

Wegerle, McBride, and Preki were tied for leading scorer in 1998, with 2 goals each:

    Wegerle: vs. Sweden and Cuba
    McBride: vs. Austria and Iran
Preki: vs. Costa Rica and Brazil

i know...it seems forever ago that the US's biggest problem was their lack of scoring threat. now everyone predicts 2 or more goals every game, if not 4 or more when we play lesser nations. (lesser in terms of footballing prowess of course ;))

My guess would be the all-time men's scorer, Wynalda.

For that matter, McBride and Donovan scored as many in WC02 as the top scorers did ALL YEAR in 98. Ours is a sad history....

Somewhere I have the US vs Greece game that was played in the run-up to USA 94. Klopas scored in that game, and the announcers were saying how he was far and away the highest goal scorer of that year. Mabye that changed, but I think it was Klopas.

Klopas was indeed the US' leading scorer in 1994 with 5 goals, all of them leading up to the world cup....oddly enough, he didnt see the pitch at all during the cup. Balboa was second in scoring in 94 with four goals
