Recall that our old NASL folded, yet the U.S. still kept playing, we were granted the opportunity to host the World Cup when many stick in the muds over in Europe were crying out to FIFA of the horror, how can a nation host the World Cup when their people don't even have a first divison league. No clubs!
Well, Pele and others truly believed that us Americans could pull it off. With the added promise that we would get MLS going.
It appears now our league is here to stay. Yet a decade agoMLS might have gone the way of the old NASL so for me it was logical to only allow the NT to reside at the top spot. And then thete is the time when your league is healthy and yet your owner wants to move your football team in red, white and blue to Nashville! So absolutely yes! Give me our football team in red, white and blue over any sports franchise, alma mater team or pro soccer club. U.S.A. soccer there will always be a next season.

The promise wasn't added so much as it was a requirement. No first division league, no World Cup.

Of course, after the fact, there wouldn't have been anything they could have done had we not followed through with MLS except not give us any more World Cups, but they're not doing that now so there we are.

A move that underscores key issues over at FIFA HQ, sure, let's steer away from the nation that allowed the planet to easily forget Italia'90 and delivered the highest attended World Cup ever in said nation with no top tier club foundation.
I just woulda wanted a requirement of our Fed to get their collective shit together cuz as far as our sport has come it is our Fed that needed to be given a task to perform/live up to iffin' we got the Mundial. Like ref schools.

Well as sad as I was when Guatemala made it 1 -1 last night, I just wanted to sing "I love it when you call me big Pappa!" at the bar.

    Maybe that means club.

I think I actually revel in the misery and drama over at the USMNT boards. One gets the impression that they all operate under the premise of constant disgust (toward everything/everyone) being directly proportional to soccer knowledge. You can't be a guru if you don't think that last pass was the worst in history, and the idiot who made it should never play international soccer again...

You are more right than even you realize.

There's that, and then there's the defense mechanism of constantly expecting the worst so that you can't be disappointed. Any success or accomplishment can't be enjoyed, because it has an asterisk or some reason it will be quickly forgotten.

Soccer is about joy. Why some people shut themselves off from joy, I will never know.

Always country over club for me, as watching the best your country has to offer as well as the team representing your country's improved talent level is never something I'd miss. When the NT plays is also the only time fans can put their club affiliations aside and root for one team together, who represents all of us.

As a huge fan of soccer, not sure how I couldn't get excited about watching the best our country has to offer, for any sport for that matter. If you like Americans, and you like soccer, why wouldn't you want to watch the best Americans soccer players compete?

    In order:

    Live over TV
    Competitive over friendly
    Country over club

It's funny how many of the people who are saying country don't live in an MLS market.

I dont understand the need to choose. I support US and SKC equally. When choices have to be made, it is not about country or club, it is about live soccer vs. TV or competitive vs. friendly. I dont understand why anyone would choose to watch a game on TV when there is a live game in your city. That makes no sense and DVRs exist for a reason.

Like I said, when Pappa scored the 1 - 1 vs. the USA it was bitter sweet for me, can't lie.
