Chim-chimmney, chim-chimney, chim-chim-charoo, who needs Anelka when we've got Kanu The stuff of legends....no way any gooner could forget that day. No doubt this Arsenal story will be told for many generations.
I remember him more for his incredible miss this season than for his incredible hattrick. Which team was it that he missed against? The point-blank miss was quite incredible............
He had some great moments at Arsenal, but ultimately didn't make the most of the talent he had here. His propensity to hold on to the ball too long stopped our flow, if he could have just learned when it was neccessary for all the trick it would have been great! I haven't seent he video because I can't download it here at work, but my favourite three Kanu memories (in true Miss World style) in reverse order... vs Liverpool away. Gio gets sent off and Kanu goes back into midfield. He plays a blinder as we win 2-1. vs Chelsea away. The hat-trick. vs Deportivo at home. A 5-1 drubbing of the Spanish outfit where Kanu scores a goal by ghosting through the defence and then doing so many step-overs that goalkeeper falls over and out of the way. The ball trickles into the net without him touching it again!
His back heel against Boro (?) was great too, if only because of the press coverage it got... Seemed to start a new craze.
Yep, that was a good one too, part of a 6-1 hammering we handed out at The Riverside I believe. God, how Boro must hate to see us turn up up there!
No, Athens. The football matches for the most part were held at Sanford Stadium on the UGA campus in Athens. I saw Kanu there as well....along with Jay Jay, Ariel Ortega, Ronaldo......
I still get goose pimply all over when I think about it. Walking about a mile to the stadium from my house to the freakin olympics was pretty cool. And at the time I was just begininng to REALLY get into soccer because of the net, champions league on espn (i think that was started by then), and satelite tv, etc, and our man KANU was one of the players I was most excited to see. The games scouldn't have been much more exciting either. Men's and Women's
I always thought he was a bit of an oddity. You know seeing such a lengthy guy with such soft moves and quite agile. He was fun to watch.
I went to both men's semi-final matches and the finals.....plus the first U.S. match against Argentina in B'ham and then Argentina vs. Spain in the 2nd round in B'ham. It was great fun....saw tons of up and coming players. The finals and semis being in Athens was amazing. As an alum...it was great going back there to see real footy played at Sanford....not that I mind Richt's version either. Woof.
The olympics will be back in Georgia soon won't they? On topic: I Haven't heard. Will Kanu still be at WBA this year? PS: GO DOGS!!!
the goose pimples came out while i was watching that. ill never forget what my mates older brother said to me just before the 3 goals. he said....''arsenal fc are on a downward spiral, its all downhill from now mate'' how wrong could he be. mind u he was a sperms fan
Thing about Kanu I remember was when Gio got sent off at Anfield and he played the game of his life, he covered at left back, centre back, midfield. He was fantastic that game. I will always remember it. He still lives in Hadley Wood by the golf club.
As a tall, lanky dude who plays forward (rec-league!)...I've always been a big fan of Kanu. That third goal from the endline brings a big smile to my face everytime I see it.
