carick would displace gerrard because they both play in central midfield. and if you played a diamond gerrard would be shunted to the left side(his worse position!) and joe cole left out, englands only other player then rooney that can make somthing happen with the ball!! remember argentina!!

Yes, I remember Argentina. We played a diamond, with King at the base, Lampard at the point, Gerrard on the left centre and Beckham on the right centre. Joe Cole did not start.

We played well and won, as I recall. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

cobra, you are aware that there is an option during a football match where you can bring on a substitute. did you know that?

Yes - off the bench. This supports my point rather than yours.

ok IMO we have the forwards settled

    Owen and Rooney

Midfield we have Gerrard, Scholes?, Beckham, maybe Lampard??? or wright phillips

IMO defence is simple cole, neville, ferdinand, carragher, terry, or campbell... personally i wouldn't put terry or campbell in my line up.

    GK Robinson, Kirkland?

england looked much better when cole was on the left instead of gerrard, so the logical thing is to start j cole from the start. so no it does not support your point

Actually, we were good throughout that game. Joe Cole wasn't suddenly the magic ingredient off the bench, although it does demonstrate that he can be a decent impact substitute.

For the record, if we are playing Sven's diamond midfield, I would advocate starting Cole - in place of Beckham, who is not suited to the formation.

Aston ain't good enough imo. I don't know what West Ham are thinking, watch them sell NRC and A.Ferdinand for 4m each in the summer.

We can argue about this all day, but the fact is that the Cole, Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham midfield is a load of crap. England's best performance in recent years against Poland was without Gerrard and Beckham!

No we can't. COBRA007 got himself banned, there's no-one left to argue with. :)

It was arguably the best midfield performance for some time, but not best overall. The point is still valid though.

Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time England put in a really convincing performance.

He could be a replacement for Sol... Terry plays like Neville. and the only other choice we have is Carragher and king i guess. 2 be honest lookin at things right now..... Id put Hargreaves as a starter hes lookin great.

    Err... No.

Sven is planning the game for 25th May, and the squad has to be named by the 15th. Sven couldn't possibly call up any extra players to try them out. This game, as Sven clearly stated, will be for him to start all the backup players in his 23 man squad to make sure they get enough match practice.
