The aerial shots of the Continental Airlines Arena during the NBA Finals tonight showed the lights on at Giants Stadium, and the announcer said it was because the Metrostars had a game. What, a scrimmage? Practice run late? Did they leave the lights on in order to get their name mentioned on a big national sports broadcast? If so, f***ing brilliant. Later, COZ
I was going to say, cities routinely light up their downtown for Monday Night Football games because it makes their city look cool to anyone who might be watching and considering a visit or a move. I'd imagine most things are on most of the time in New York anyway. But if there was a friendly going on, the Metros may have gotten some pub without having to pay to turn the lights on. In Indy one year, the AAA baseball team turned the baseball stadium lights on and put something in the outfield (a Colts logo, I think, or something) so they'd get some pub during an MNF game.
A few years ago in Texas someone left the lights on in the baseball stadium over night, by mistake, I think. The next day saw a plague of moths of biblical porportions. (I think I got the story right)
