Which player, in your opinion, has always performed well/stood out in his most important matches? For example; Gunnar Nordahl has scored 11 goals in 11 european matches for milan, including a hattrick in one Latin Cup final and a goal in his other. Together with his 1948 olympic victory, he has won and scored in 3 of his 3 international finals. In the olympic final, he supposedly dribbled past a few yugoslavians before he hit home. Unfortunately, there's no footage of these heroics.
I am far from a Chelsea fan but this is impressive re Drogba at Chelsea: 2005 - A goal in the League cup final that Chelsea won 2007 - Both goals in a 2-1 win over Arsenal in the League cup final 2007 - Winner against Man United in extra time of FA Cup final 2009 - Equaliser in FA Cup final against Everton that Chelsea went on to win 2010 - Winner in FA Cup final against Portsmouth 2012 - Winner against Liverpool in FA Cup final 2012 - Champions League, late equaliser to take the game to extra time and then the deciding penalty in the shoot out against Bayern Munich
must be clutch in term of goal only ........ or can be in the form of assist or goalkeeping save or others?
Here's some modern players against big clubs: Drogba, Ronaldinho, Henry, Ronaldo and C.Ronaldo all seem to be rather close each other, Messi in complete different league. Though this doesn't take into account how good your team played. (atm Juventus, A. Madrid, PSG and Dortmund stats are missing from everyone other than Messi and Cronaldo. Here's World Cup career related to team edge: World Cup Career Goals (Scored + Assisted + Involved) Messi 18 (5 + 6 + 7) out of 22 team goals = 82% (+1 SO goal) Rossi 17 (9 + 3 + 5) out of 21 team goals = 81% G.Müller 22 (14 (1p) + 6 + 2) out of 30 team goals = 73% Cruyff 11 (4 + 4 + 3) out of 15 team goals = 73% Romario 8 (5 + 3 + 0) out of 11 team goals = 73% (+1 SO goal) Eusebio 12 (9 (4p) + 2 + 1) out of 17 team goals = 71% Schillaci 7 (6 (1p) + 1 + 0) out of 10 team goals = 70% Pele 22 (12 + 8 + 2) out of 37 team goals = 59% Maradona 19 (8 + 8 + 3) out of 32 team goals = 59% (+1 SO miss and goal) Zico 11 (5 (1p) + 5 + 1) out of 19 team goals = 58% (+1 SO goal) Kempes 17 (6 + 6 + 5) out of 30 team goals = 57% T.Müller 18 (10 (1p) + 6 + 2) out of 34 team goals = 53% Zidane 9 (5 (2p) + 2 + 2) out of 17 team goals = 53% (+1 SO goal) Ronaldo 21 (15 (1p) + 6 + 0) out of 41 team goals = 51% (+1 SO goal) Klose 20 (16 + 3 + 1) out of 42 team goals = 48% C.Ronaldo 6 (3 (1p) + 2 + 1) out of 16 team goals = 38% (+1 SO goal) Charlton 6 (4 + 0 + 2) out of 20 team goals = 30% Again Messi seems to be the most cluch player.
Those Drogba stats aren't correct. He's scored 3 goals against Juventus in his career. Possibly more.
(atm Juventus, A. Madrid, PSG and Dortmund stats are missing from everyone other than Messi and Cronaldo.)
then, Speigler of Israel is the most clutch player, his percentage is 100%. 1 out of 1 team goals in WC in the entire history of Israel. ratio or percentage does not show how important you are, at most, it can show how your team is dependant on you. (not always though) Badda Bing has great comments.
hmm, what about starting with something like this?! http://www.averageopposition.com/2012/08/top-50-big-game-scorers-5-1.html but this criteria included only these matches: International: World Cup, European Championships, Copa America Club: European Cup/Champions League, Copa Libertadores, UEFA Cup/Europa League, European Cup Winners Cup may be (and for sure) many important matches were not taken into account e.g Messi scored 21 goals against Real madrid but only 2 of them are taken into account on that criteria but match against Real Madrid is an important one we can say. and now, it is time to determine a criteria. anyway, even if we counted every derby and toop 5 team matches I very doubt there is somebody who surpasses Pele in terms of scoring, assisting and contributions in big matches. I guess the answer is Pele.
Pele? 1958 WC 4 matches / 6 goals 1 assist 1959 CA 6 mateches / 8 goals 1962 WC 2 matches / 1 goal 1 assist 1966 WC 2 matches / 1 goal 1970 WC 6 matches / 4 goals 6 assists Taca Brasil 30 goals in 33 matches Copa Libertadores 17 goals in 15 matches Intercontinental Cup 7 goals in 3 matches
This is not too bad: Samuel Eto'o Cameroon Goal in 2-2 drawn in 2000 African Cup of nations final, Cameroon won on penalties Mallorca Two goals in 2003 Copa Del Rey final win Barcelona Winner in 2006 Champions League final Opening goal in 2009 Champions League final 2010-11 Season with Inter Two goals in Super Coppa final, Inter beat Roma 3-1 Two goals in Coppa Italia final vs Palermo, Inter won 3-1 A goal in FIFA world Club cup final, which Inter won 3-0 ...... five in finals in one season !!!!!!!
These are the ones I found that he scored in, he was in 2010 Champions League final too, no goals though.
