Zidane is the best player that is still active.

However, although today he's still one of the best, I think Ronaldinho is the best. Raul and Nedved are close.

He is asking for the best player in the world, not the most over-rated player in the world.....

If you are going to list Beckham then you have to list Owen. Owen has recently won Euro player of the year and is one of the most lethal strikers in the world.

Either way I say Ronaldo, but I digress.

Zidane. He may not get all the goals, but what he does is infinitely more important, he can set the pace of an entire match. And, he does it beautifully.

If you're asking who has been playing the best football at this, the beginning of the season I would name:

Beckham (Real) - has been playing well at Real, scoring and assisting.

Del Piero (Juventus) - the best player on the pitch versus Wales and for Juventus in the early rounds of Serie A. Looking back to the form of the player of 96.

Adriano (Parma) - Has looked like one of the best players in the world in his last few games. Scoring great goals with his left foot.

Who's been playing particularly well in England? Holland? France? Germany? Brazil? etc. . .

Because they are on Nike and Adidas commericals, thus that makes them the best in the world.

    OH
    5 players from one team?

In any case, the answer to the question is clearly Brad Friedal. ;)

    Pavel, who else.

A very very very close second is Raul. He IS Real Madrid.

Pavel is great and I think gets my vote. With regards to Raul he is also great. But to say that a team with Zidane, Beckham, Figo, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos (amongst others) and that only one player IS Real Madrid is funny. No one player IS Real Madrid even if he is arguably the best player on the team.

Well, this is what I mean.

When I think of the other players you mentioned, this is what I think.

Zidane: France and his bald spot
    Beckham: England and Manchester
    Figo: Portugal and Barcelona
Ronaldo: Brazil and the Inter flop
Roberto Carlos: Brazil and his weak ass defending.

Raul is the only one that instantly brings on the image of Real Madrid when his name is mentioned (some would argue the Spanish NT too). See what I mean? Raul IS Real Madrid.

    HAHAHA!!!

Raul would not survive a month outside the Madrid glasshouse environment.
