At this moment in time, I think Nikopolidis has to be considered. He did not make a single mistake at the Euros, and he was the keeper of the tournament. He also played very well in the friendly vs. the Czech Republic. The Czechs dominated, but thanks to good goalkeeping (and, admittedly, a few posts also) the game ended scoreless.
Nikola Milojevic! YEAH!! he allowed an amazing 14 goals to be scored on his team during their brief stay at the Olympics! He's the greatest!
What you and some others here don't seem to understand is that this poll does NOT say "who is the best goalkeeper in the world right now", it simply asks which of those 4 is the best. Some have questioned Tim Howard's recent form, therefore the comparison between the guy he replaced, Barthez and him. As Howard currently seems to be up against his 2 fellow American keepers for the no. 1 keeper position on the US national team. So as you see, these four were chosen because of the connections between them. The “joke” is that people here honestly couldn’t tell from the choices offered and the wording of the question what this poll was designed to ask.
Everyone relax. I am happy to run a part two with more keepers, these were just the first four that popped into my mind at that moment. Give me a list of who you want. The first 16 will be aort of the next poll. madhoman
Barthez -- Over-rated and too inconsistent Howard -- The most athletic of the bunch, but needs to improve his decision-making Keller -- Pretty athletic, a good decision-maker, and consistent... he seems to win the starting role whenever he's given a chance to play Friedel -- HUGE frame, less athletic than the other three, pretty good decision-maker, but doesn't control his area as well as he should for a man his size I like Keller best right now, but I think it won't be long 'till Howard is the man.
Here are some names of good goalkeepers, maybe some people don't think they're good, in that case they can also make a list. Buffon Casillas, Hildebrand, Cudicini, Toldo, Cañizares, Dida, Howard, Barthez, Kahn, Lehman, Vitor Vaia, Ricardo (Portugal), David James, Óscar Córdoba, Molina.
I only included goalkeepers that are actually playing now and I THINK Chilavert isn't... or is he still playing for Velez-Sarfield? But apart from that do you think that the others I inlcuded are good?
Does anyone watch the NHL? If not, there's a goaltender I compare to Dida, with one exception. Anyway, back in the 1980's, the Edmonton Oilers were the "it" team. Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Craig Simpson....the list grows. In net, the Oilers had Grant Fuhr. Gretzky and Messier would score goals, but that would leave the 'tender all by himself to defend. Needless to say, Fuhr let in some goals. Fuhr was a great goaltender, Dida is a luke-warm keeper with a great attacking team. Just as long as Sheva scores, there's no worries. My tip for keeper is Toldo. Consistant vetran. Who would you bet your house on? Toldo.
Grant Fuhr was an excellent goaltender for his days on Edmonton. But don't compare him to Dida, I think that Dida is a bit better than you think on Milan. As for Toldo, he was an excellent keeper but is starting to slip due to age and Buffon is by far the worlds #1 keeper.
You need to add Oliver Kahn to your choices above, but the best keeper, by far, is Brad Friedel of Blackburn Rovers! He's the best! IntheNet
The best goalkeeper at the moment and probz in europe is arsenals keeper Jens Lehmann!!!!!! he has been ace this season. Look at some of his saves on youtube!! SCOTT
Without doubts at this moment: 1. Gianluigi Buffon 2. Petr Cech 3. Íker Casillas 4. Oswaldo Sánchez 5. Grégory Coupet
Hes inconsistent during club play. but he always comes through in the Euro and WC. The Angolan keeper was also pretty good. Cech for me. Lehman is also good.
