Which clubs are generally regarded as being the most successful in Italy after the big three (Juve, Inter, Milan)?

In England people view Leeds, Chelsea and Newcastle as big clubs when they are nothing of the sort. Infact I take great pleasure in telling them that Everton's haul of 9 league titles is only bettered by Arsenal, Man U and Liverpool.

Which do tifossi regard as the most important? Roma and Lazio on recent league performances? Sampdoria winning the European cup? Napoli's great team of the 80's with Maradona? Torino's all conquering team of the 40's. Bologna's team of the 30's or Genoa's domination at the turn of the century?

Good question, I would think Torino. They're squad would have been the best in Italy if not for that unfortunate horrible plane crash. Torino might well be bigger than Juve if not for that.

But surely.... several DECADES is enough time for them to have recovered from that!!! Manchester United had a similar occurrence, no?

Yes, it's a difficult question to answer because of the different eras. Time was, Bologna was a powerful club, but now they are now. Likewise, Parma ought to be included based on recent performances.

Here are a few interesting ways to look at it:

    All-Time Record in Serie A (since 1929)
    1. Juventus
    2. Inter
    3. Milan
    4. Roma
    5. Fiorentina(!)
    6. Torino
    7. Bologna
    8. Napoli
    9. Lazio
    10. Sampdoria

    So, one vote for Roma.

    Number of championships
    1. Juventus
    2. Milan
    3. Inter
    4. Genoa
    5. Torino, Bologna, Pro Vercelli
    8. Roma
    9. Fiorentina, Lazio, Napoli

Looks like one vote for Genoa, except that this was all of their championships occurred before the advent of the professional league in 1929 - same for Pro Vercelli, two of Torino's and one of Bologna's championships. Bologna and Torino split that vote.

    European competition
    (source: http://sathanasias.bravepages.com/f-teams/ft-ita.html )

    1.Juventus
    2.Inter
    3. Milan
    4. Roma
    5. Fiorentina
    6. Parma
    7. Lazio
    8. Napoli
    9. Torino
    10. Sampdoria
    11. Bologna
    12. Verona

Another vote for Roma, although Parma could get a vote for most trophies won (3) vs no more than one for anybody else (outside of the top 3, of course).

Roma, because it's the one club that escapes relegation even in bad years, like the big northern clubs
it's also as successful as any other on the list,if not more,in modern times

other than Napoli having a larger following, there's no argument against AC Roma

Napoli, Napoli, Napoli. If for no other reason than they had the greatest player ever, Maradonna.
