Might sound like a dumb question (and probably is) but watching Johnny Walker today it dawned on me that all that play in Chile probably has made him very capable of improvising....Saw him comfortably play with the ball with both head and feet, when unable to use his hands...I know KK is not very reliable on this dept. Howard is OK....Friedel (?) It must be that we are usually the team that plays the counter (not done as much TO us) that i never bothered to see how our GKs rank in this department...Opinions?

Here's hoping he can move up in France.

Certainly use of feet/ head are only like 10%-20% of what makes a good goalie, which is why i thought the question itself was quite superficial....BUt still, who the heck is Westberg? I was referring to the keepers who are among those with a shot to play for the USMNT, not prospects.....
    Players like:
    Walker
    KK
    BF
    Brown
    TH
Anyone else w/ a legitimate shot?

Friedel had a goal vs. Charlton this season; that's gotta count for something... :)

Maybe Matt Reis, but I assume you're speaking of guys with a legit shot.

I know that this is by far the weakest part of Adin Brown's game.

Friedel scored a goal this year, that should count for something.

EDIT: Whoa! I posted without reading the thread. Who owes whom a coke?

    Coincidence? Maybe not:

"Walker, 29, who recorded his first shutout of the season Sunday against Kansas City, may not have made people forget Howard - yet. He is not as athletic as Howard (who was an excellent basketball player), but Walker (6 feet 3 inches, 180 pounds) is a student of the game, he yields few rebounds and he has the skills of an outfield player, developed as an all-state striker in his native Tennessee and refined overseas. "It worked for me because in South America, they encourage the goalkeepers to play the ball with their feet," he said. "They want to play the ball out of the back and not just boom it up with a punt. It's helped my skills."

I think part of the secret to Walker's great poise is his confidence with the ball at his feet.... i also wonder, since he's had a few caps, how many more it would take for him to qualify to transfer to Europe...I would not like to see him go as a Metro fan, but he is quite solid. Plus, after Arena has been able to see what he can do, Walker understands all his main competitors are plying their trade in England, and probably will maintain an advantage over him in the USMNT unless he goes in the near future...At 29, he is not very old as to say he will stay in MLS for good.....
Oh, forgot to mention, that name he has is quite marketable, to put it mildly ;) ...Does the brand sell well overseas? I'm sure if this is the case, he could make lots of cash in advertising....considering England, even Germany's drinking traditions...

I could be wrong but I think Johnny Walker spirits are imported from Britain. Johnny Walker the keeper IMO is the best of our lot W/ his feet and also the best distriutor.

The U-17s? No Phil Marfuggi was the #1, Steve Sandbo and Westberg pretty much split the time as #2.

    Troyes? No idea.

    Roster #31 - that doesn't look good.

The first page I found shows him playing for the Troyes 18 year olds

The second page shows him dressed, but on the bench for the senior side (Ligue 2)

    Here's the team site:
    http://www.alleztroyes.com/site1024.htm

He's one of 4 first team keepers. The team stats show that he didn't get into a first team game this season. But then he was a 17 year old GK during the season.

Thanks a lot...I myself was looking up the web for some info, to no avail....I guess the candidates for future big matches (Gold Cup, qualifiers, WC -hopefully-) remain Brad Friedel, Kasey Keller, Tim Howard, Jonny Walker, and Adin Brown, the last two being a bit behind as long as they stay in MLS and/or as long as the three EPL goalies keep playing well and do not drop off significantly in quality (quite a long shot).... Tony Meola based on his current form qualifies too, but might be too old to last till 2005-2006 at the same level, or beat out the others...
