As Fire fans, or soccer fans in general, who in the Chicago sports media (i.e. Tribune, Score, AM1000, etc.) do you despise the most?
Not sure about that, but I voted for North because he has become more of an ignoramus (if such a thing is possible) and a frontrunner for Dubya ever since 9/11/01. Also, he has become as Robert Feder called him, "An equal-opportunity offender." Indeed, I have stopped listening to him and put on "Magic 104.3" when I come home from work.
The Downey Sucks.............................................my balls Mike Downey (Tribune) - Rick Morissey is okay--from time to time he makes a unique and good point about a Chicago area sports team (never a soccer team though)--and I always thought he was decent as a supporting columnist, but I was anticipating the arrival of someone who could really write a coherent and interesting sports editorial. It appears that my anticipation is over, but I can't think of a worse person to fill in as the new sports-ed. lead for the Tribune. Downey is a zany, old guy with no original ideas and no love for any sports other than baseball and golf (aka two of the worst sports ever invented). Not only that, but he usually just writes the same thing that Morrissey writes... only a few days later. As a Turkish friend of mine would say: "He's an illiterate monkey." I miss the days of Skip Bayless.......
the good ol' days For anyone who loves sports and remembers the glory days of Skip Bayless, he is now at the San Jose Mercury News.... why? I don't really know, but he's still writing his same style of column (he may be completely wrong, but his audacity is unparalled in the editorial world). http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/
Jay Marrioti. He's a scum bag, insults fan's intelligence, only writes what sounds good at the time, hypricate, and major kiss ass. It's fine if he has an opinion about something, but he's the biggest bandwagon jumper I've ever seen. Plus, he always jumps on stories that are negative. He doesn't know anything about hockey, yet when Theo Fleurry was in the news, he was all over it. He was also the same man that called Scottie Pippen a whinning loser and said it was a sham how the Bulls treated him while still in Chicago. He's also the man that tells me, a Bulls fan, that I should be ashamed for saying anything bad about Michael Jordan. One of the many MJ ass-lickers. A lot of people I know like Around the Horn on ESPN. I refuse to watch it because he's on it. The again, if I read the Trib, I probably wouldn't have such strong opinion about him...
I'm going to go off the board and say Fox's Bruce Wolf. I don't know if he's trying to be either funny, or informative, but he comes off as neither. Not even close. Annoying as nails on a chalkboard. Honorable mention: Jay Marrioti. I've only watched "Around The Horn " a couple of times, but I get a queasy feeling when I'm reminded that Mr. Marrioti is representing the opnions of the Chicago area.
In no particular order: Mike North - Biggest ********************* in town. A biggoted moron who somehow won the lottery of life and got himself a radio show. Jay Mariotti - I honestly believe that Jay is manic depressive. He is so high on a team or player one day, the next thinks they are the worst thing since Hitler. Steve Rosenblum - will take a shot at soccer for no good reason but to get a laugh. BTW Oakparkbob is trolling the Fire board on chicagosports.com, ripping the Fire. I have to think that it really is Bob Foltman.
Soccer aside, lucky for us, Steve's bitter, grumpy-old man humour more often misses than hits. I think that's why he has to cover so many short cheap shots in one column, because the humor success rate is so low. I've always found him to be small-minded and unnecessarily brutal. It must me nice to be so smart in a world full of idiots. In defense of Mike Downey, while I often wonder what he's writing about and why I might care, today's column was one of the weirdest and funniest sports columns I've read in a while. Kudos for the creativity, and humour that isn't based on put-downs. But my left-field vote goes to Walter Jacobson on Fox's 9pm news - specifically for attempting to take on sports (bears, cubs) during his hideous 'editorial' segment.
Good points about Rosenbloom. I still remember back when he had the "Hit and Run" and said that President Clinton's executive order banning oozies and AK-47's would be a tough break to "fledgling soccer fans." He also said that the US performance at France 98 should shut us up. For once, I think we shut him up after last year's cup!
