    Pigs Eye (St. Paul),
The MetroStars just traded Mike Petke, the fifth 2003 draft choice overall, and an allocation to DC United for Eddie Pope, Jaime Moreno, and Richie Williams. Who got the better of the deal?

Pope acquired by MetroStars in Multiplayer Deal -Wire

well if you simply judge it by the players involved, then obviously the metros won out. but take into to account the cap spaced that dc cleared, their young stars, and possible moves hudson could make, then the outcome is variable. depending on what dc does with those two senior international spots and the draft picks they use or trade, this could be a great deal for united.

    we shall see...

This deal needs at least 2 years to get any kind of hold on who comes out the better..

Initially it has to be the Metrostars because they get 3 grizzled MLS vets who have 9 MLS Cups between them while United gets a servicable defender in Mike Petke plus the potential of the #5 pick and an allocation..

    Right now - Metros

2 years from now - could be a whole different story..

    Midwest, the real one.
Suddenly Hudson has a LOT of young talent. The next few years will be very telling of his abilities as a coach.

With al the cap room cleared, I think DC edges Metros, right now, but in a few years they could prove this trade to be massive.

exactly... as long as it isn't gazza and ray finds some good young foreign talent, then i believe dc will be alright.

i don't like the loss of pope, but something had to happen. three years and not making the playoff in this format is rediculous. united can only go up now.

I know I said this before but,
Given the Metros and Scum performance in the 2002 season, trading between them is like changing kids from one yellow short bus to another.

the question can not be who got the better end of the deal, because it was attacked from two different angles...
metros wanted talent for now, dc wanted to build...

    p.s. moreno mathis strike combination?

    could be good...

same was said about diallo mathis

I say the Metros, though it will be hard for me to picture Pope and Moreno in a Metros uniform and Petke in a D.C. uniform this upcoming season.

depends on how many games Pope and Moreno actually play for the Metros***s...

    Pigs Eye (St. Paul),
A factor in this will be how well they like playing on the artificial surface in the Meadowlands and whether they get injured on it.

Right now yoy have to say the Metros - they get proven talent.

DC has taken all the risk. Check back the day before the season starts for more prediction. When Ray overhauled Miami, he picked up a bunch of MLS players - players we all knew.

I guess we will see what kind of a talent evaluator Ray really is when he chooses players he won't have seen nearly as much.

That's exactly what was said last year.
"The combo of Mathis, Faria and Serna will surely get the Metros the MLS cup this year"

Even as a United fan, I have to admit this could be one of the best uses of "yellow short bus" of all time. Great stuff.

From a DC perspective, this trade was just to clear cap room. Marco is unmovable, both on the field and off. Pope had value, and a high salary. IF the team can use the picks, allocations and cap room to address the fact that we have nobody who can score, then this was a great deal. If we end up signing fossils like Hristo and expecting Alecko and Quaranta to provide our offense, then it's a disaster.

Pope is proven if he's healthy.
Bob Bradley is a step up.
Mathis, Faria, and Serna were all unproven before last year.
I still think the Galaxy has a great shot to repeat.
It does depend a bit on Olympic callups too of course. DC could have quite a few. Not sure about the Metros or Galaxy.

Revolution win in this trade. Only team not to mess with the team chemistry (for once) and will only get stronger. Revs in 03!

Metros are laughing at DC right now. NY's earning loyal DC Soccer Gods, and DC's getting a pretty boy with a nasal strip.

The key to this trade from my perspective is that DCU has now eliminated the MetroStars as the one team with significant cap space. When you combine this with the fact that DCU sits first in the waiver order right now, this deal makes it much tougher for teams like Chicago and San Jose to find any takers for guys who need to be moved to clear cap space (e.g., Wolff, Razov, Grazianni--or whichever other high-priced players those teams decide to part with to get under the cap by 1/3/03).

This trade significantly enhances the probability that a couple very good players will get cut by somebody to clear cap space and that DCU is then positioned to acquire them for free.

Even if players aren't actually cut, the value of max or near-max players on cap-stretched teams is going to be very low as we approach 1/3/03.

In light of the foregoing, I view this trade as Petke, the #5 and a major allocation for Pope straight-up. (In essence, DCU sent Moreno and ABMOD to NY in lieu of waiving them to clear cap space... which they would have done if there had been no trade.) Notwithstanding that Pope is a great player, he's 29, has significant USMNT commitments, has an injury history, and DCU has more than enough defensive depth already to play Hudson's preferred three-man backline (Nelson, Reyes, Petke, Prideaux, Namoff).

I can't judge this deal from the MetroStars perspective (as they had a ton of cap space to play with and many alternative options), but for DCU, this is unquestionably a great trade.

(Now Mapp and a pick for Hristo and Dema... that's another story.)

impossible for me to vote without knowing who they draft and who the allocation is.

Doesnt matter who DC drafts or allocation will be. New York gets the better deal. Far and away the better deal. Always go for the proven veterans over unproven youngsters. Boy is DCU management stupid and I am a DCU fan. I dont believe in building for the future. Waiting and building a team is a misnomer. The future is now.

I voted for DC. Any team that has to have that little ankle biting midget on their roster automatically loses out.

What if the allocation score 30 goals a season? You just never know.

I'll have to agree what most people have said here: For now the Metros have the best of the deal, but in the long run it could really help out DC.
It is great though to see Eddie Pope in a Metros Jersey! :D

Metro. Bradley will make this work -- and even has promised more changes. He must have trades in mind, because we have to be approaching the cap limit with this deal.
