I've had 2 casual conversations with people about the World Cup and they actually ask this question as if the other countries are just teams to get behind :)

They have no idea what the obvious answer is.....hopefully THIS will change in the near future.

I think it tells you what we are fighting against here in the U.S.
I am Mexican American and there is no question who I am rooting for. Go USA!!!!!! Its America first then your parents native country.

I think we'll have to win the WC some day (or at least come close) for people to by-and-large pick America to support. At least three of my friends told me at the beginning of the tournament that they're not supporting the US because "They never win." It's horrible (especially since one of them is supporting Spain, who hasn't won either.)

This is not a Club tournament, its a tournament of nations, and the obvious is to support your Country. And if you dont support your nation, something is wrong with you. But I understand your frustration here.

Other teams that "never win" the World Cup:

    Ireland
    Scotland
    Sweden
    The Netherlands
    Portugal
    Denmark
    Nigeria
    Ghana
    Greece
    Japan
    Korea
    Egypt
    Mexico
    ...
the list goes on and on. Yet, somehow these people find ways to root for the above teams because their great-great grandpa came from there. Does not compute.

I'm going to get flamed perhaps but after the Nats (of course, go USA!) I support...

    dun dun dunnnn

    Mexico.

Also, I am not Mexican-American, just have a lot of Mexican-American friends that are awesome people...also I enjoy their style of play as much as ours because they are so much different, adds a new flavor.

As someone said before though, its awful to have people living here and not support our team especially if they have NO TIES to the country they do support. I can't tell you how many "Italians" I have seen who will only support Italy and not the U.S. despite being 1/4 Italian only and being born/raised here...its unreal.

This is exactly the problem I was having on Facebook. I have pro-USA status updates...then random "friends" of mine say how they "blow" and Italy is going to dominate, which we all know how that turned out.

People just like to say they love Italy, Spain, England, Germany, etc b/c they're known as soccer powers...same reason why everyone loves the Yankees, Lakers, Red Sox, LeBron, Kobe, you name it....

Since most people still say that their heritage is Italian/German/Irish/whatever instead of American, its not much of a surprise that people support those countries. The only time it bugs me is when they root for these teams before the USA.

USA first, no question. I have a fairly strong connection to some Dutch relatives via my grandmother, so they are a strong no 2, but head to head there his no question I support the US.

It really irks me when people become fans of 'winners' in baseball or NFL but don't have a connection (via hometown or generational) to the team, but what really gets me is someone picking a national team if you have zero connections to it.

I mean this is your country your talking about. Its not a franchise that may move to Nashville next year. Is the USA, we're not going anywhere.

I use to be like you USA first than Mexico, but after seeing a lot Mexican fans wanting the USA to lose against any opponent. The heck with this, i dont support Mexico anymore.

I will admit to hoping Mexico does well in the WC... until they meet USA ...2-0...

It gives CONCACAAF credibility when our teams do good.

silly american professional sport culture has cultivated these maniacs, imo. They root for other professional teams from other cities over the ones that represent their city often cause of a player or they feel that team is more prestigious.

We're still young and writing our history - I think it will eventually change once the general public are well educated in the world of futbol... I think it will also help if some day some how we find a way to have a local club in all major cities. (obviously way way way down the line).

USA all the way, but I've also liked Germany because of my heritage and I like their style of play. Now if USA plays Germany in the World Cup in the future, then f**k the krauts

We can have a USA-Mexico Semi Final. I think this would be the best thing for soccer in the US. This rivalry game would blow up all the rating records ever recorded for US television.

As a Mexican-American with many friends of the same background AND living in a border city, it's easy to say that I am in the minority in backing the US. I have been to US/Mexico qualifiers where my table is the only one supporting the US. So why don't I back Mexico as a second team even though my surroundings say I should?

Well, at one point I did- during the 90s before I knew better. After moving to the borderland in 2000, I paid more attention to the Mexican side as I received Mexican TV channels and watched their games. Aside from being a dirty team that likes to dive, they are come off as extremely arrogant, which based on their history have no reason to be.

I still get it from friends and family (more during the WC), but I always answer with the following: "I picked my horse in backing the US national team and I am committed to that. I have one favorite and that's it. My loyalties don't bleed over to secondary teams."

Nope not in the semi's! But we can have a FINAL :). Which btw would piss off the rest of the world, to a degree that UEFA would ask FIFA to only allow Concacaf 1 spot in the next World Cup.

I go back and forth on Mexico. Sometimes I want them to do well - for our confederation's sake. Then I think of Douche Nozzles like Rafa Marquez and that classes keeper who tried to take out Eddie Johnson. That's when I start hoping Argentina give Mexico the two foot 'ardido' dildo treatment.

Sure we can. We're in the same bracket.

I take it back, no we can't. My direct tv brackets are wrong.

Honestly we're not. Had mexico won its group like USA did, then we could have met in the semis, or if USA would of tied for second and advanced on GD then we also could have met in he semis.
