Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Chelsea and Leeds United are the big six, at least at the time that the term was coined. I think it has to do with TV Deals and the subsequent allocation of TV money.

Replace Newcastle with Everton and to a lesser extent Chelsea with Spurs and your more or less bang on the money.

But in terms of the here and now that list is pretty accurate, well except Leeds of course.

There is no big six. It was the big 5 when the clubs broke away to form the Premier league.

    They were
    Arsenal
    Everton
    Liverpool
    Manchester United
    Tottenham Hotspur

What is that? That's eight. Comme's explanation above sounds about right to me.
