Right back at you. You have no idea how bad the 2006 WC was for me. It's a good rivalry. Too bad we're not in the same group

    Wow, this is interesting. :D
What did they do? Any videos or links?

The result came as a shocker to me. I was hoping that at least one country from the Eastern Block makes it. This world cup has no one from the Middle East and no one from beyond the Iron curtain.

    Slovakia is in it actually.

As far as Slovenia goes, to start off they booed our anthem, threw a lighter at Akinfeev our goalie, and time wasted like crazy ( holding the ball out of bounds and refusing to let Russia get a throw in ). And when Kerzhakov was wrongfully sent off they started to taunt him.

Welcome to world cup qualifying. You are now obligated to hate 95% of all soccer loving countries in the world...

They taunted him! The bastards! ;)

95 % ? I don't think so. Not that I was surprised, countries from the Balkans aren't exactly known as the best sportsmen when it comes to football.

balkan area always send two teams since 98

    98: yugoslavia and croatia
    02: slovenia and croatia
06: serbia and montenegro(former yugoslavia) and croatia
    10: slovenia and serbia

and im not including countries like bulgaria and romania because i dont know if they actually consider themselves as BALKAN or SLAVIC people.

Romanians aren't Slavic. Bulgaria is considered a Slavic nation and yea, they're smack dab in the middle of the Balkans.

For me I get attached to a team after the tournament starts

'06 Portugal- looked like a complete team after the group play
'02 Turkey- after they gave Brazil a rough time
    '98 Croatia then Holland
'94 beleive it or not I wanted the USA to advance passed Brazil
'90 Cameroon- AFter they beat Argentina

I mainly follow teams that give alot of effort . After watching a few of the African Cup games, Only Egypt looks like they're playing with effort.

It's possible to be both as Balkan is a geographic term and Slavic is a Linguistic one.

yes almango, but accepting the term depends on a culture sometimes. mexicans for example dont consider themselves are people from central america. at least 30% of mexico's land is located on that subcontinent...

It's not "possible" it's how it is. :D Balkans = region, Slavic = cultural and linguistic group.

USA is my team but here are the rest:

    1) South Africa: Once in South Africa I know I'll get caught up in rooting for the home team. The country has gone through so much you can't help but feel for them and hope they can pull off another miracle like they did in the 1995 Rugby World Cup (I loved the movie Invictus) and the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations. Talk about karma after abolishing Apartheid and electing Mandela president.
    2) New Zealand: I fell in love with this country via the Lord of the Rings movies and all the stories about the shooting of the movies and the friendliness of the people. I then witnessed it first hand for 3 weeks last February. I have never felt safer or more welcome anywhere on this planet than I did in that country. Peter Jackson is right, it is just one big friendly village! They are the ultimate underdogs this World Cup, they have to be #32 of the 32 teams easily which makes it easier for me to root for them.
    3) England: I'm 25% English and being American I love to hate them a bit but also love the culture and liberty loving philosphy of the people that came from England that helped in the 1776 Revolution and the US Constitution. I love the passion of the fans that I witnessed first hand at a West Ham match in 2006 (I was in the supporters section where we sang for the full 90+ minutes in a packed stadium against the worst-team in the league at the time). Even their 2nd tier league gets amazing attendance and passion. I love their excitement and optimism before each world cup and their subsequent anguish after losing. So screw all the haters, I'll root them on if the USA is out.
    4) Any other African team other than Algeria. Sub-Saharan Africa has been subjected to so much crap over the years that I can't help but root for them to win one for Africa. I loved my time in Egypt and all but Northern Africa doesn't seem to have suffered as much as the rest of Africa. Would be nice to see one of these teams to pull it off. My fave goal celebration of all time was the Nigerian who crawled on all fours to the flag and lifted his leg to pee like a dog on it in the 1994 World Cup!!!
    5) Algeria: They are an African team so why not, just not as much of a feel good story as the other parts of Africa that have gone through more bulls&@#!
    6) Honduras and Mexico: Gotta stick with my North American brothers no matter how much they might hate the USA. I actually think both teams can do some damage.
    7) Spain: Because they play such a beautiful brand of soccer.

Not sure about the rest but I will root against North Korea cause that country is a represive regime... maybe the players are doing what they can to get by despite all the tyranny so if they bust their butts I might feel good about them but I feel for the people subjected to the tyranny of Kim Jil Ong (or whatever that dictator is called).

Slavic NT's in the last WC's:

    86: USSR, Poland and Bulgaria.
    90: Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and USSR.
    94: Bulgaria and Russia.
    98: Croatia, R.F.Yugoslavia and Bulgaria.
02: Russia, Croatia, Slovenia and Poland.
06: Ukraine, Poland, Czech Republic, Croatia and Serbia-Montenegro.
    10: Serbia, Slovenia and Slovakia.

Balkan NT's in the last WC's:

    86: Bulgaria.
    90: Yugoslavia and Romania.
    94: Bulgaria and Romania.
    98: R.F.Yugoslavia, Romania and Bulgaria.
    02: no one.
    06: Serbia-Montenegro.
    10: Serbia.

Some people consider Slovenia, Croatia, Greece and Turkey like "Balkan", not me.

Greece is entirely Balkan, apart from some scattered islands. Turkey has a small part of Balkan territory, including the balkan city with the most hsitory, but modern day Turkey is not really a Balkan Country and I don't consider it such. Croatia has a considerable part of its territory and history connected with the Balkan's, and I consider them a Balkan country, but its up to them what they think. Slovenia is not a Balkan country, although it was once part of a nation that was. I wouldn't consider Romania a Balkan country.

I don't really care that much about the other teams, I want the ones that show good attitude, respect for the opponent and love for the game to win.

I think the refs are mostly the ones to blame for the Irish Affair, and C.Ronaldo is not enough for me to dislike Portugal, so they're kind of neutral in my book. I would have liked N. Korea to win some matches, simply because it's usually a joy to see the underdogs celebrate after playing the game of their lives, but the political aspects are too big an issue. Sometimes politics do enter into the sport, I guess (thinks of Chile - USSR... Ugh...)... Anyway, good luck and good times to everybody (except the dutch).

why would that include brazil then??? Have you seen them play under Dunga??? Take a look at the 2007 Copa America Final and you will see the definition of Anti Futbol. Even when they beat us in Rosario, they only counter attacked...

Not saying that Argentina plays nice futbol under Maradona (we don't we suck uder him) but we were the best side in terms of quality, attacking play (not results) at the 2008 Olympics, 2007 Copa America, and 2006 WC. The notion that Brazil play "joga bonita" all the time is a joke. They are the best team in the world at getting results, but look else where for attacking flair. They may find this if Ronaldinho returns...

brazil doesn't play or develop an ANTIFUTBOL style on the field, but plays MODERN FOOTBALL. brazil doesn't rely on JOGO BONITO, but still utilizes when is necessary. Although they are critized right now they are a tough team, and it is really hard to score. brazil now doesnt have a hard time with defensive weaknesses.

i really hope ronaldinho returns, but if the avatar character keeps organizing orgies at hotels in italy then he doesnt deserve a spot for southafrica. ronaldinho must be smart this time.
