Here's the list I've made thus far (preferably in Widescreen format): Raiders of the Lost Ark Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade King Solomon's Mines Alan Quartermain and the City of Gold Lost Horizon The Rocketeer The Shadow (unfortunately, no Widescreen version could be found to this point) The Phantom The Mummy The Mummy Returns The Scorpion King       I'm sure there are others, though... aren't there? -G
Are pulpy sci-fi movies allowed, like "Ice Pirates"? (Oh wait, that's not available on DVD.) How about pulpy fantasy movies like "Kull the Conqueror"? Are these outside the genre you're looking for?
VHS is alright, I guess, although DVD is preferable. I haven't really watched a pre-recorded VHS tape since I got my first DVD player a little over three years ago, and haven't really watched any VHS tape since I got my TiVo about 1 1/2 years ago.       I suppose that pulpy sci-fi movies are allowed (and I've heard good things about both your choices). Another friend of mine had suggested both "Flash Gordon" and "The Mask of Zorro", which also seem to be good choices since while they're not based in the 1930's/1940's, they both still have their origins in the Pulps and/or are sufficiently pulpy. -G
Maybe some of the old British Empire flicks set in India and Africa would fit well with those. I'm sure you could find some adventure type ones set in the 20s and 30s, if that's what your criterion is. They can be pretty "pulpy" at times. If you go earlier, you could include the likes of "Gunga Din," my grandfathers' favorite all-time film--I remember it being good fun.
You should include the cheesy 1980s version of "Flash Gordon." I'm sure someone has put that cheddar festival on DVD.
Would this upcoming movie also qualify (once it's released on DVD, of course)? -G
Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins with Fred Ward was a surprisingly tolerable B-movie (based on a pulp novel character).
Does show up as       for some reason? Edit - guess not. But it doesn't show up as five spaces.
The       HTML indentation used to work here for years until shortly before the recent BigSoccer software change. Then needed to be used until the software change, after which even that stopped working. By the way, great suggestions from just about everyone so far. -G
It seems that Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow will be making its way to stores in about a month - and subsequently, into my DVD Pulp collection. Though I still have yet to find a Region 1 (U.S.) Widescreen-version DVD of The Shadow. -G
Would Runaway Train with Jon Voight and Eric Roberts qualify? Two cons escape an Alaskan prison and hop aboard a freight train which then loses it's brakes and runs out-of-control with them on it. Is that pulpy enough? Just be sure to look away when Jon Voight puts his hand in the buckle between the two train cars.
Abbott and Costello did several fine send ups of the genre, I would suggest they be added....and yes, I'm too lazy to list them all.
A great film! Based on an unproduced screenplay by Akira Kurosawa. Directed by Andrei Konchalovsky. Not the usual pulp garbage. Terrific ending as well.
