Terry has 0 penalties. Ramos has 1, which would shoe horn him to second. Hierro had 21 PK goals. And also about 55-60 as midfielder.

IFFHS has Paul Breitner as top German name but I think he scored about 86 of his 103 top flight goals (after 1974) as a central or attacking midfielder - perhaps a bit less than 80. 31 are penalties. The second on their list is Dietz. This is just going by the IFFHS list (and then looking at BL goals only). Maybe I overlooked some foreigners (e.g. Pezzey, Rontved, Naldo - the latter being the 'best' active player currently).

    Dietz - 77 goals (6PK)
    Kaltz - 76 goals (53PK)
    Hannes - 62 goals (31PK)
    Neuberger - 62 goals (1PK)
    Bonhof* - 57 goals (20PK)
    Höttges - 55 goals (40PK)
    Hermandung - 53 goals (0PK)
    Augenthaler - 52 goals (0PK)
    Kree - 51 goals (15PK)
    Brehme - 50 goals (18PK)
    Kremers - 50 goals (9PK)
    Rüssmann - 48 goals (3PK)
    Briegel - 47 goals (9PK)
    Rolff* - 47 goals (2PK)
    D. Jakobs - 45 goals (0PK)
    Körbel - 45 goals (12PK)
    Pezzey - 45 goals (0PK)
    Beckenbauer - 44 goals (3PK)
    Rontved - 40 goals (0PK)
    Naldo - 38 goals (1PK)
    Ziege - 37 goals (0PK)

Next three on the Spanish list are Iraola (33 goals), Capdevilla (29 goals) and Dani Alves (25 goals; has also an odd 85 direct league assists). Pirri extremely high with 123 goals but he scored many as midfielder or forward.

    Italy:

    Facchetti 59 goals (0PK)
    Vierchowod 38 goals (0PK)
    Mihajlovic 37 goals (8PK)
    Materazzi 36 goals (12PK)
    Cabrini 35 goals (5PK)
    Passarella 35 goals (12PK)
    Panucci 34 goals (0PK)
    De Agostini 33 goals (11PK)
    Maldera 33 goals (0PK)
    Maggio 32 goals (0PK)

Next on the list are Maldini and Oddo with 29 goals each. I'd be surprised if there's another defender with more than 40 goals.

I had a look for how many Ian Harte scored in one season but seems it was only 7 or 8 PL goals.

Another player that crossed my mind as a defender who used to score goals was Frank Verlaat (mainly at Auxerre) but Wikipedia isn't clear though it's unlikely he got many in the French league over a single season by the looks of it:

Thanks PDG. Ian Harte scored 29 goals at the highest league levels (England and Spain). 10 of them are penalties and 10 were free kicks.

Frank Verlaat scored three goals in the Dutch league, 15 goals in the Swiss league, 15 goals in France, 6 goals in Austria and 11 goals in Germany. Together 50 goals, but to investigate the PKs for each league separately will take time then. His best effort is eight in one season, just as Harte then.

Yeah, both played continental football and ofc domestic cups but I would think the single season tally wouldn't likely be high teens (maybe not low teens either) for either in all competitions.

I found one other Serie A defender now with more than 40 goals. Sergio Cervato had 45 Serie A goals though with 24 penalties (active 1948-1964). Some claim he preceded Facchetti in his offensive pretensions, as an early 'prototype'. His own wiki explicitly claims he's second to Facchetti in goals by a defender.

Ciro Ferrara with 27 goals (0 penalties) has also a decent profile here.

Here are the details for each competition: Fiche de Verlaat

Sometimes, there are errors into these profiles there but it is very very rare.

Thanks mate - actually McAfee is stopping me viewing that page and I'd better not ignore the warning really even though I'm sure you haven't posted a dodgy link. Maybe you could give a quick summary of the info though, in relation to Verlaat's scoring?
