Hey people, ive recently become a follower of the american game (thanks to championship manager 4 and other things) and have started to like the a-league, i was wondering if you people could help me decide what team to support in the a-league and every other league in the USA apart from the MLS? Im edged towards Vancouver Whitecaps as my fave all time player Peter Beardsley once played for them but im un decided, help me???
I'd suggest the Whitecaps as well, even if we aren't American. Don't forget Peter Beardsley also played a game with the Whitecaps as recently as August 14th, 2001 when he played a full 90 minutes in a 3-1 loss against San Jose of MLS in a friendly. http://www.sjearthquakes.com/press_box/081401release.htm Also you can follow the Whitecaps by bookmarking my site (shameless promotion). http://newheads.tripod.com/swangardsouth/
Well the Whitecaps conection is hard to beat. But the Charleston Battery are one of the only teams in the only teams in the US to have its own stadium (complete with a 5000 square ft. pub full of soccer memrobillia) and have quite a strong English connection. Our primary owner is from england as is the General Manager and our coach as well We have a few names you might reocgnize on our squad now. Terry Phelan (ex man city Rep. of Ireland Int.) Barry Moore (ex Woking, Crawley Town) and Dino Maarina from Stevangeboro You can listen to all the Battery matches live via webcast. Plus another bonus is that Charleston is a great city for a holiday if you should ever want to visi shopping, beaches, history, golf, great food , entertainment, important facts if you need to convince the misses. Check out www.charlestonbattery.com rome around and look for the videos of the goals in the "match report" section Hope to see you around. Mikey
team to support rochester would be the most logical choice in my opinion [and i'm not just saying that because i live in rochester]. Heres the resume: - have averaged 11k+ fans for each of their 7 seasons of existance - league champions in '98, '00, '01 - US OPEN CUP CHAMPION IN '99 - league championship runners up in '96 and '99 - USOC runners up in '96 soon to come, new 17,500 seat stadium for next years season you make the choice
Re: team to support The Rhinos are definitely not the team for him. The last the he wants is to be labled a ManU bandwagon jumping type for going for a team that actually wins titles.
The Kickers should be your team. They have a great coach in Leigh Colishaw and have youth teams from somethin like age 5 all the way up to their professional team, just like the european teams do. They have been successful on the field the last few years with a A-League Regular Season Championship in 01 and they were A-League runners-up last year. They've also won the US Open Cup in 95 but that was before MLS teams competed in it. Richmond is the team for you, normally you won't find a team with more heart then the kickers although it hasn't shown too well to the start of this season but they'll turn it around and surprise a lot of people.
Montréal, because we're on the upswing and on the verge of greatness. But we *could* be considered the ManU of Canada since last year...
Hahahaha! The team that went the furthest last year was Vancouver. Besides a follower of a team wants to get to know their hardcore supporters, and from overseas the only way to do that is by following the fan sites. As far as I know, the Ultras Montreal only converse in french.
Well I tend to follow all the Canadian sides. With Toronto Lynx being my favourite, because of the number of players who have played there and have broken into Europe (most notibaly Paul Stalteri of Werder Bremen).
Ditto with Atlanta, although they seem to be doing a little better this year. I guess a pre-game concert with free beer actually may work in bringing out fans.
Well, I'm from Milwaukee and I support Newcastle United, so you could do the opposite and support Milwaukee Wave United And I would say that if any state's residents could be called "the geordies of America" it would be us cheeseheads, so you'd fit right in
Re which team Vancouver has a Newcastle youth player on their team, so they would be your logical choice. Calgary has a young kid from Leeverpool (Danish club I think).
Right now, NO. They are way too far away for me to go to the games right now. If Naperville gets an International Airport I might consider going to the games out there. I suppose that they don't need another team and a new team might draw away some of the fanbase from the Fire.
Re: Re which team Yes, and he was recommended by Peter Beardsley, so of course now the obvious choice is the Whitecaps!
Though I do not root for this team, I think someone should as their continued existence as always caused me pleasant bewilderment, one of the longest continually running teams to date, the El Paso Patriots. If geography is not an issue, why not root for them . They just continue to exist and no one can tell me why.
When were th El Paso Patriots established? I know the Whitecaps (this version-under the name 86ers) were established in 1986 and been playing continually since 1987.
Top ten reasons why its got to be the Kickers: 10. People who don't like the Kickers call them the Knickers, which is very British. 9. Newcastle Brown Ale is available all over town. 8. The Kickers play about a mile or so away from "Agecroft Hall" which is a genuine Tudor house from near Newcastle which some rich guy bought just as it was about to collapse into a coal mine and brought over piece by piece and reconstructed as a birthday gift for his wife. 7. The Kickers invented the charity frisbee toss half-time gimmick. 6. The Kickers have a bodacious truck: http://www.teamcoachllc.com/ 5. The Kickers were coached by Northern Ireland international Colin Clarke, who scored the goal to beat Spain in Spain in the 1982 World Cup. 4.Denis Violett was the coach for a while and he was a Busby babe, which means the Kickers have a connection to Man U before they went over to the dark side. 3. The Kickers have had pots of internationals play for them: Dian Anguelov (Bulgaria), Dwayne DeRosario (Canada), Darrell Etienne (Haiti), Gary Glasgow (T&T), Onandi Lowe (Jamaica), etc., and current Kicker David Testo just got called up by the USA U-23s, the only A-leaguer on the team. 2. The Kickers advanced to the final game last year in a game that went to penalties--ten rounds in which nobody missed--and then the Kickers won on a penalty by their goalie, Pascale. 1. For several seasons a few years ago the Kickers played in replica Newcastle United kits.
I'm back to try to convince you to support Milwaukee, but this time I brought some help. Follow this link: http://www.geocities.com/x_conquerant_x
